No, I haven't had any problems with memory loss at all with Xolair.

I did have times I forgot things when I was on Chemo (10 yrs ago when I had

cancer).

Is you Mother in law near the age of menopause. I think sometimes that can

affect memory somewhat but I don't about forgetting whole days. You might have

her check with her doctor.

Hi,

I am a new group member. I was just wondering if anyone has experienced

any memory loss when using Xolair. My mother in law has been using

Xolair for approx 1 1/2 yrs and we have noticed that in the last 6

months whenever she gets her injection about 1 week letter she has an

episode where she cannot remember anything that happened during the

day. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Any information on any side effects would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Thanks for the reply.

She was hospitalized and they could not link it with anything.  They said it

could be a one time occurance but since then it has happened 5 times.  The only

new medication that she has been on is Xolair.  She is going to attempt to go

off Xolair for a period of 6 months to see if it happens again.

I have suspected that my memory might be slightly diminishing although

nothing dramatic. I don't associate it with Xolair per se although I'd

never thought about that ... assume it was high stress in my life.

It's more a matter of recalling names of people places and things. I

think that when my sinuses are inflammed and my head is throbbing or my

lungs are tight and I'm not getting enough air that it affects my

mental function. Prednisone and other steroids can create memory

problems along with a myriad of other disorders.

I can't say I had such severe episodes of memory loss, but cognitive impairment

during my trial of Xolair was one thing that made it seemingly untenable for me

to continue.

In my case, this seemed consistent with worsening of my systemic mast cell

disorder -- triggering additonal synthesis/release of histamine/other mediators.

Hence, too, the spike in my prolactin that's since resolved. Pretreatment, my

serum IgE levels were modest, but a blood test indicated elevated antibodies

against IgE receptors -- similar to a patient whose chronic urticaria reportedly

went into remission with Xolair administration.

This is very interesting! How did you ever get a test to see if you

had elevated antibodies against IgE receptors?

I have noticed on a few occasions (including the last Xolair

injection by a slightly incompetent RN) I have had a strange odd

sensation for a little bit - maybe 1 to 5 mins at the most - where I

felt sort've " removed " or " foggy " or somehow not completely all there

although I talked and think I acted ok. I couldn't ever put my

finger on it though. It slightly reminded me of a TRH challenge test

except there was no urinary urgency and no particularly funny taste

in my mouth. It was sort've like something took control of my mind

and body (slightly) very briefly. However, since I never had any

swelling or difficulty breathing associated with the injection I did

not consider it serious.

I think I'm going to ask for a Prolactin test in the next few

months. I doubt the pulmo will do it, though.

My blood pressure has gradually escalated since I've been on Xolair

although I don't know if that had anything to do with it. I'm

thinking of going off Xolair at least for a while but that's for a

myriad of reasons including cost and access and the fact that it

seems to have mysteriously stopped working after 1-1/2 years. The

latter seems very strange.

Xolair in a way has improved my memory. Before xolair, all I could

take was 50 mg of Prednisone a day and sometimes more just to be able

to breathe. It was horrible on my mental state and my memory was

terrible!

Since Xolair has taken away my need for Prednisone, my memory has

vastly improved.

Just my personal experience here. Everyone is different. Talk to your

doctor.

- My memory's gone to hell since I've been on Xolair, but then again,

it was well on the way before that because of lifelong sleep apnea which

prevented proper conversion of short-term memory during my sleeping hours. We

think the apnea was caused by severe childhood asthma.

Thanks for your response Terry.  Do you think it could be caused by the Xolair

or do you think it is the sleep apnea?  My mother in law has had approx 5

episodes in the last 6 months and the episodes can vary from 5 minutes of just

feeling foggy to whole days of memory being lost.  It happens about 1-2 weeks

after her injection each and every time.

- I wish I knew the answer to that. Actually, I remember very little

of anything - my childhood, my adult life, whatever - just scattered disjointed

bits and pieces, many of which are quite vivid. What's been bothering me most

lately is the fairly frequent missing word. I go to use a word and it's not

there. It'll come to me in a few minutes, but when I want it, it's missing.

It's not a big problem, partly because I have a large vocabulary so I can find a

substitute without missing too much of a beat, but it's annoying. I've been

thoroughly tested, and it's not Alzheimers.

Getting back to Xolair, we've been noticing a number of odd things that

developed this past year or so, and we're beginning to wonder if any are Xolair

related. However, I'm going up to Duke next month to see a doc at the Asthma,

Allergy and Airway Center Clinic who specializes in Pulmonary and Critical Care,

and whose clinical interests include allergy and immunology, immunodeficiency

and immunoglobulin therapy. Hopefully, we can get to the bottom of the problem,

which is mostly chronic infections.

Does anyone else feel that being on prednisone for an extended period of time

messes with the brain?  I always felt like it messed with my brain everytime I

went on it and I know it messed with my personality.

Yes Adah,

I would get prednisone pychosis while on Pred. I had very extreme mood swings

and was not my normal self. I would get agressive, hyper, (felt like someone on

speed) I couldn't sleep and would go on cleaning frenzies late at night. When I

drove I would be very road rage..ish. I would also get very emotional and would

feel like I was seriously going crazy. I think I was even a little parinoid.

I know not all people have this severe of a reaction. My husband took it and

didn't have any issues. Some people are just more sensitive to the Evil Candy.

Here's to hoping we can all stay off of Pred or get off of Pred soon,

Amen to staying off of pred.  My reactions could be extreme, but I also worked

very hard to keep a balance mentally, knowing how I reacted to the pred.  Glad

you can be off of it!
