Guest guest
as best as i understand it, the IgE level appears to increase because its measuring the amount of " bound IgE " (the part that xolair already worked on) as well as the new " free floating IgE " (the part that your body made since your last dose of xolair). your body continues to make new IgE. xolair does its best to keep up with it. you can see this post /message/6289 for a better explanation. also, you might want to do a message search for " free floating IgE " for more information about it. heather > > Ok, first the Plaquenil shouldn't really effect your allergies. Guest guest
yup! 's got that right! The " average blood test " that checks one's IgE level can not differentiate between the bound and un bound IgE. So if someone is on Xolair and they get their IgE levels checked it looks like there levels have trippled -+. There are quite a few people that my allergists treats who have their " normal " IgE levels in the 6,000 range. Think there is also some one in here who's level was like 45,000 ( yup....read that right!) Guest guest
Thanks for the reply. Does this mean that the IgE levels continue to increase or do they decrease after you have been on the xolair for a while? In my daughter;s case she is very allergic to the environment outdoors and in and she is extremely itchy 24/7. I guess I was hoping that the xolair would lower her IgE and this in turn would help with the hives, itcing, etc. She also has allergic asthma but that isn't as bad as in the past(it seems when her AD is bad her asthma is better). I know I am looking for a miracle here. At one point her allergist had suggested she try xolair but now he is waiting until she sees this new dr in June which is only 2 1/2 weeks away so I can ask him these questions. I just figured you guys have personal experience and probably know more than drs anyway. I do appreciate any info you have or anyone with allergic eczema with high IgE levels that xolair has helped. Thank you. jean ---- heather <heaven1975@...> wrote: > > as best as i understand it, the IgE level appears to increase > because its measuring the amount of " bound IgE " (the part that > xolair already worked on) as well as the new " free floating IgE " > (the part that your body made since your last dose of xolair). your > body continues to make new IgE. xolair does its best to keep up > with it. > > you can see this post > /message/6289 for a > better explanation. also, you might want to do a message search > for " free floating IgE " for more information about it. > > heather > > > > > > > > > > Ok, I'm back at it again with arthritis meds along with my > Xolair and > > > > associated asthma meds - Advair (500/50), Spiriva, Albuterol. > > > > > > > > I was diagnosed w/Serro negative rheumatoid arthritis almost a > year ago > > > > and after having a bad experience with methotrexate (which is > known to > > > > cause lung disease although others on this board have gotten > along ok > > > > w/it) I was afraid to take Plaquenil. Guest guest
How about this one, guys. After a year on Xolair, my free IgE tested at 1900 (the test differentiates between bound, free and tissue bound IgE). Before I started on Xolair, my IgE was 900, and of course that was free IgE because I hadn't started Xolair yet. Doc is puzzled by this, but says if the Xolair is working, forget the IgE figures. However, I've got other issues involved - inflamed and infected sinuses off and on, so I don't know whether the Xolair is working or not. My wheezing at night is better, but I still seem to have lung congestion. My new infectious disease doc did a soup Nazi routine and shouted " No more antibiotics for you " when he learned I'd had more than 30 antibiotic prescriptions in the last year and a half. He wants to get rid of the inflammation first, and if I still have infections after that, he'll have them sucked out. Sounds weird to me, but everything else has failed. Guest guest
You are a lot like me. Not all symptoms correlate to immediate hypersensitivity (ie. driven by IgE). I have Eosinophilic Esophagitis, Asthma as well as GERD. The GERD gets into both my already inflamed esophagus and my lungs, the latter which is driven by non-IgE sensitivity. Because of the GERD I am prone to infections in both my lungs and esophagus. Xolair can do nothing for that. Xolair controls the allergic component of my asthma, but sadly for me does little for my EE. The current medical opinion is that despite Asthma and EE being related, EE is more likely driven by T-cells. > > > > > > > > Ok, I'm back at it again with arthritis meds along with my > Xolair and > > > > associated asthma meds - Advair (500/50), Spiriva, Albuterol. Guest guest
CLARIFICATION - we are all making new IgE all the time, so we can experience allergic reactions from any new IgE that gets a chance to bind to the mast cell prior to Xolair getting to it. Xolair does not ADD IgE. It binds to the IgE so it will not bind to the mast cell and start the allergic chain. The bound IgE stays in our system and most of the tests our docs have access to cannot distinguish between bound IgE and unbound IgE, so results of IgE tests while people are taking Xolair (and for 6 months are so after) are somewhat inflated. Terry, your ID guy has a pretty good plan. If you can control your inflammatory responses you shouldn't get an infection. You and I are very much in the same boat as far as that is concerned. I hope all of you have a very healthy holiday weekend! Guest guest
I am curious. & nbsp; How does the GERD cause your lungs to become infected? & nbsp; Do you also have a hiatal hernia? & nbsp; Can you not take med for the GERD which would help control the acidity? & nbsp; It is my understanding (I am not a pharmacist, nor a medical specialist, but I do read a lot) that Nexium helps heal the esophagus from the GERD, but I guess it doesn't help your EE? & nbsp; I do know that GERD, if not treated can lead to esophageal cancer. & nbsp; I have a friend who has had GERD, did not know it so it was not treated, and he has had surgery for esophageal cancer, which the doctors told him was from the untreated GERD. & nbsp; Of course he now takes meds for the GERD. & nbsp; Sounds like you have some very serious problems. & nbsp; & nbsp; My allergist has insisted that I have an endoscopy to make sure there is no esophageal damage so far. & nbsp; My GP who dislikes tests overall, agreed that I should have this done. & nbsp; So I have one scheduled. & nbsp; The xolair has cut down on my sinus/respiratory infections, mainly because mine were caused by allergies--sneezing, drainage, etc. & nbsp; Of course any infection always led to a severe asthma attack and prednisone. & nbsp; Haven't had to go the antibiotic/prednisone route since I have been on xolair! & nbsp; Yea! & nbsp; I have known since my asthma became mildly severe that GERD (acid reflux) and asthma somehow always go together, but not being a medical specialist, I have always wondered why, or how. & nbsp; & nbsp; It is hot, humid and the mold count is way up here in SA. & nbsp; I don't go outside anymore than I have to....it is hard to breathe when the weather is hot and humid! & nbsp; I am so thankful for A/C. & nbsp; Remembering our brave, loyal, courageous soldiers this Memorial Day--both living and those who have given their lives for our freedom.....let us never forget them....... & nbsp; Adah From: billybaroo1958 & lt;cajjz109@... & gt; Subject: [ ] Re: JEAN xolair raise IgE (was Allergies, Asthma, Arthritis....) The current medical opinion is that despite Asthma and EE being related, EE is more likely driven by T-cells. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Ok, I'm back at it again with arthritis meds along with my & gt; Xolair and & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; associated asthma meds - Advair (500/50), Spiriva, Albuterol. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; I was diagnosed w/Serro negative rheumatoid arthritis almost a & gt; year ago & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; and after having a bad experience with methotrexate (which is & gt; known to & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; cause lung disease although others on this board have gotten & gt; along ok & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; w/it) I was afraid to take Plaquenil. The stiffness and pain & gt; finally & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; drove me to start it 4 nights ago at just 50 mgs once in the & gt; evening. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; It's normally prescribed at 200 mgs twice a day. I'm nervous & gt; because I & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; have a long history of unpleasant drug side effects. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; While consulting w/my pulmo recently I thought she said & gt; something about & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; the Plaquenil helping (as in making better) one of my allergic & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; complaints so I assume that the anti-inflammatory properties & gt; of & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Plaquenil must reduce the allergic inflammation also? & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Again, has anyone tried Plaquenil who has severe allergies (My & gt; IgE was & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; 409 before Xolair and on Xolair over 1200)???? I've been & gt; having a & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; rather bad time for several weeks - can hear myself wheezing & gt; softly & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; (actually thought it was the cat purring until I held my & gt; breath and & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; noticed the cat " stopped " purring!!!) and even my hubby can & gt; hear it. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; So, the current treatments are not really enough to keep the & gt; allergies & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; truly under control right now. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; I guess that theoretically the dose is so low on Plaquenil & gt; that it & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; shouldn't have any effect although I think it is causing & gt; nightmarish & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; disturbing dreams. I thought I was a bit more irritable too & gt; plus there & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; was decreasing nausea the first 3 nights. On the other hand, & gt; I'm & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; hoping I'll be able to work up gradually to the normal dose. & gt; It would & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; be good to control two different diseases (although several & gt; docs have & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; told me that arthritis, allergies, and asthma are all related) & gt; at the & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; same time. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; It's doubtful that any influence on Xolair or vice versa is & gt; known since & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Xolair is so new and it works on different systems (I assume) & gt; and in a & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; completely different way. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Plaquenil comments, anyone? & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Thx & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt;

Guest guest
Hi Addy - that was my point - this special test was supposed to provide free unbound IgE, Xolair bound IgE and tissue bound IgE readings separately, and yet the free IgE only reading was more than double what it was before I started Xolair. Go figure. Terry ----- Original Message ----- From: pyle456 Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 7:39 AM Subject: [ ] Re: JEAN xolair raise IgE (was Allergies, Asthma, Arthritis....) CLARIFICATION - we are all making new IgE all the time, so we can experience allergic reactions from any new IgE that gets a chance to bind to the mast cell prior to Xolair getting to it. Guest guest
Addy - my local pulmo doc set up the test. Before he had me take the test (of my blood), he claimed he was the only doc in town who had this test that would show the various forms of IgE separately. He was perplexed by the results. Obviously this whole Xolair thing is an inexact science with occasional surprising results. ly, I'm beginning to think, along with my infectious disease doc and my ENT doc, that if I can get my sinus inflammation problems cleared up, other probs like the asthma may clear up. The infectious disease doc says I should never use decongestants, which I'd been using regularly, because they're contributing to the sinus drainage problem. Who knew? However, I'm supposed to continue the Nasacort, and perhaps be put on some other really strong steroid spray. It'll be interesting to see how this revolutionary (for me) works out.
