We use astelin for my 10 yo who always seems to have a

stuffy nose. I can't say that I see much improvement.

He also is on zyrtec, and before that allegra. He

was doing pretty well when we were flushing his nasal

passages with a gavage and sea salt, xylitol and bk

soda. But we stopped, and I am not getting

cooperation about resuming it. It is not pleasant.

Dr. G wants us to get a tympanogram to see if there is

a lingering sinus infection. Barb

Barb,

You can use astelin and zyrtec at the same time? Is one in the

morning and one at night? thanks, Timary

ps - I hear you on the tympanogram. My son had 4 sets of tubes in

his ears so getting a tympanogram was a common occurrance for us.

But I didn't realize it would help diagnose a sinus infection - I

thought it only determined if there was fluid in the inner ear.

Dr. G said it could provide info as to whether or not

there might be an infection. He wanted to do this

before doing xrays. Its funny. I just tried to get

to do the nasal washing, which he hates, and he

showed me that both nostrils were clear. This

indicates that it is not a sinus infection but just

post nasal drip/allergies. Barb

fyi: tympanograms can be done for free by a

government agency called CASE. In fact, the whole

auditory eval. can be done for free. We have used it

yearly. We live in Illinois. I don't know what other

states offer. Barb

Astellin is squirted into the nasal passages 2x daily.

Zyrtec is taken by mouth at night. Barb

Timary,

You might want to ask Dr. G about switching from Zyrtec to Allegra... one of

my kids does better on Zyrtec, the other does better on Allegra (we didn't

have much luck with Claritin). We also use Astellin at night like Barb

does.

So, if you are taking astelin 2x daily I guess you don't use the

zyrtec (that would be doubling up...)

thanks!

We use ...

* Allegra (1 60MG tablet 1x daily at night).

* Astelin Nasal Spray (1 spray in each nostril 2x daily as needed).

* Nasacort as needed (1x daily at night).

Per Dr. Goldberg, we use all of the three above at the same time

sometimes... depends on how our child is doing. Astelin is just a nasal

spray... if I understand correctly, an antihistamine spray. The Allegra is

a pill which treats the whole body, and we use the Nasacort when my child's

sinuses start getting swollen (he starts picking because he feels like

" there's something in there " ).

The meds all compliment one another.

Not necessarily, they function differently. Astelin is purely a nasal

administered antihistamine.

Zyrtec, while providing this protection also " significantly reduces the

migration of inflammatory cells such as eosinophils and the release of

mediators associated with the 'late' cutaneous allergic response " amongst

other things.

Our son has 1ml of drops or 1 x 1mg tablet each evening. We have used

Astelin as added protection when needed from pollen, dust, or other

'seasonal' irritants.

You should check with the Dr about when to

They can both be used daily. One targets the nasal

passages and the other, overall allergy symptoms.

Oops - sent before editing....should be 10mg Zyrtec tablet - equivalent of

1ml drops.

last line should say..

you should check with the Dr about when to give and what dose.

Barb,

Yes... we use the Zyrtec and the Astellin every day. With that regimen, we

have managed to avoid the sinus infections he used to get (of course, it

can't have hurt that he was on the antibiotic for PANDAS all winter, too).

I have not seen this med mentioned but our 3 1/2 year old takes an

allergy/decongestant/ANTICHOLINERGIC med called Ah-Chew. The Zyrtec

did little for him and Dr G thought he needed a decongestant also.

And the ANTICHOLINERGIC has a drying effect on mucous excretions. It

also does not keep him awake at night....he takes 1/2 tablet at

bedtime along with the Astelin.

  • 4 years later...

works great for me and it usually starts working almost immediately.

I find the following order works best:

Rinse my sinuses with saline solution, and blow as much crap out as I

can.

Use the astelin. Wait ten minutes. blow some more. Use my steroid

spray (nasonex/rhinocort/flonase).

REMEMBER the nasal inhaled steroid meds (ICS) have to be used regularly

to be of maximum benefit.
