Guest guest
Ann- Why not just reduce your carbs somewhat (say, by cutting out starches) and see what happens? A few pounds isn't enough to require drastic measures, at least not for many people. >I can't stay below 20 grams as in Atkins Induction, but I have done >Protein Power in the past which allows up to 40 grams -- I think I'll try that. -
Guest guest
>> My question is, what will I eat with my butter? << Yeah, that's been a problem for me too. I've been letting it melt on my cooked veggies, which is delicious, and also I cook my eggs in it. And a friend doing Atkins shared a treat with me, which is to hard boil an egg but not ALL the way - beyond soft, but not quite hard, maybe an 8 minute egg - then peel it while still hot enough to burn your fingers, then chunk it up with butter and pepper and a bit of salt if desired (eggs taste plenty salty to me already so I skip that). It's wonderful and the butter gives it a wonderful mix of cold and hot, creamy and chunky. Hard to describe but very good. You also mentioned keeping to 40 grams of carbs rather than 20 - the nice thing about Atkins is that you yourself select your carb level. Many people skip the first two weeks of induction (20 grams, mostly from leafy green veggies) and go straight to the second phase, which is called " Ongoing Weight Loss. " What you do there is just add 5 more grams of carbs daily (from a specific list and in a certain order) for a week and see if you are still feeling good and losing at a rate you are happy with. There is no upper limit on how many carbs you can consume in this phase, although he says most stay below 50 if they want to lose. My mom has been doing 35-40 daily and has lost 15 pounds and 7 inches off her waist in about 6 weeks. Christie
Guest guest
You know what? When my fiance studied in chef school they always put real butter on the steaks when they were finished as a " finishing " procedure. =) This was about 4 years ago. So, I suspect nicer restaurants still do but just don't advertise it. =) Dawn On 15 Jul 2003 at 15:22, antioecumenist@... wrote: > > ----->i LOVE pouring melted butter on my steak! yum :-) > > > > Suze Fisher>>> > > > It is funny to think of how many people would be so horrified at the > idea of pouring butter on your steak. Thats better than the 40g allowed on PP. << See, this is part of why I picked Atkins: YOU work out your own carb level for weight loss and then again for pre-maintenance and maintenance. I don't believe there is " one size fits all " - everyone is different, and at different times of your life, the amount of carbs (and other foods) you do best on will change. Men often can eat much higher carbs than women without storing excess body fat, people with high activity levels and revved up metabolisms also. If you select a plan that is meant for weight loss, how will that plan transition when you are at your goal weight? How will that plan function as you age, have kids, go through menopause, have an injury that curtails your activity level? I am not saying Atkins is the ONLY way to do this, just that one of the reasons I selected it as " my " low carb plan was its flexibility and its individualization. Guest guest
I was dx 10/05. I had lost about 50 lbs in addition to pregnancy weight in the 2 years prior to dx, I was finally getting to a weight I liked for the first time in my life. I have since gained all 50 lbs back. My appetite was awful at first with gleevec. Still nothing tastes right, but unfortunately I do comfort myself with food often and haven't been drinking as much water as I should. I also find that the nausia and direah is less if I do more small meals and less large meals so I snack a lot to keep the nausia at bay. I would love to get to exercising more but the fatigue doesn't leave me with much left when I get through the day. Good luck to you! Hopefully yours will come back off. :} [ ] Weight gain I am starting to put some of the weight back onm that I lost before I started Gleevec. Also, my appetite has come back with a vengeance. Guest guest
Thanks for the feedback. I was diagnosed on January 2, 2007 and lost about 60 pounds in the ten months prior top that. One of the reasons that I lost so much was a decrease in appetite due to my enlarged spleen whihc was compressing my stomach. My spleen is now normal and I get so hungry. Like you, I have no energy to exercise. I get so hungry especially at night. " lunaemica@... " <lunaemica@...> wrote: I was dx 10/05. Guest guest
Hello All, I have been diagnosed with CML since Oct. 2003 and after a hellish time on Interferon went on Gleevec in the spring of 2004. (as a side note, if I seem uncertain on the dates I have also found that I have a very poor memory, which is a side effect also.) I had very bad diarreah that took so long to control that I was to the point of stopping all meds and letting Nature take its course. The savior was Sandostatin, I have had good results from the start although there was a time of experimentation with the dosage and also with the long lasting type. Luckily my Dr. allowed me to try any dosage I figured would help. I am now on 6oo mg of Gleevec/day and 300 mg of Sandostatin/day. I still have problems with nausea and lately insomnia. My appetite is not good and I find that I use comfort foods rather than healthy foods. My weight has remained constant throughout. I would like to hear from anyone who has got a way to get back to good foods. Thanks and Good Luck to us all! Terry > I was dx 10/05. Guest guest
Well, Gleevec causes water retention, so maybe part or all of the gain is water. I take diuretics. The first day I lost seven pounds. My weight goes up and down by a few pounds now, but I am not the model slim I used to be. Personally, I dont care. As far as what and how you eat, I think eat what you want but keep it small and often. I went thru hard chemo for 3 years and the only things I wanted were sweet and tart. It was pretty much all I could taste. AS my Dr. tells me, " Be happy you're here and dont sweat the small stuff " . Guest guest
I also have some weight gain since diagnoise last August. I was so think while on Hydrea for 3 weeks. And then I switched to Gleevec in early Sept. My weight started to gain back. The thing is I feel very week when I am hunger. It is like I have low sugar attack - feeling shaky and exhausted. I have to grab food to eat and make me feel better. So I don't let my stomach go empty anymore. It may also be water retention too. Being on Gleevec makes me eat more and often.... > > I am starting to put some of the weight back onm that I lost before I > started Gleevec. So I have joined a swimming club that has a steam room and a Sauna and I am trying to sweat out the extra weight. I will let you know how it goes! Guest guest
Hi Melisa, How long did it take you to gain the 30 pounds. Do you do any excercise or walking or swimming? Do not feel depressed about the weight. I too have had several changes, my skin colour for example has become different and dark circles under my eyes as well as the extra weight especially in my face, but I try to look at this as a new phase in my life..a new chapter almost so maybe we look a bit different but really when it comes down to it, we are exactly the same people before the medication, The doctor has told me if the fluid still stays they can give a diuretic which should help but makes you go to the toilet a little more than usual. I have not opted for this route right now.. Good luck Melisa and God Bless.. Guest guest
Yes, I too went through the " always famished " stage of Gleevec therapy. Some days are worse than others. I gained 40 pounds the first year but I don't blame Gleevec for it. I'm sure the ice cream, chips and other junk I was shoving down my throat had something to do with it I did manage to get it off in the third year though. Mostly because I started to watch what I ate but also because I just got used to feeling hungry and ignored it. Tracey dx Jan 2002
Guest guest
Hi Efrem and , I have been on Gleevac, over two different time periods. I too, gained weight, over 40 pounds, total, and the last ten, I gained due to the depression of my entire experience of being ill. I know how you two both feel, as I was always considered too thin until about 6 years ago. I was a Fit Model in my 20s and a Girl in my early 30s.(not as a fulltime profession but the work was fun and I liked the extra $$) After Gleevac, I used to cry to my father about how heavy I had gotten. It is both scary and depressing. In the long run, it will be OK, and even though it is easier said than done, the weight can come off. Remission and surviving, without Chemo, is worth the payoff. I am now struggling with my emotional health, as well, and perhaps in retrospect, it was more vanity than anything. It is sobering, none the less. Guest guest
Hello Efram! Boy, is this topic right up my alley! I have struggled with weight gain and edema since diagnosis over 3 years ago. I have put on over 60 lbs! But hey,, I'm PCRU so I don't qualify for a change in medication instead of Gleevec. I also used to be a long distance cyclist, before diagnosis, and now there is little resemblance to the person I once was. I struggle with edema. I take up to 80 mgs lasix, along with potassium, but it is a constant struggle. When I take a dose, and it kicks in, I visit the bathroom every 10 minutes with a full bladder for over 2 hours before it stops. It never gets rid of the problem.. it's always temporary. The next morning, my entire body is swollen and the process starts all over again. If I want a life, and go somewhere, I cannot take my diuretics. I am constantly using a bathroom! It's absolutely crazy! My fatigue level goes up and down. I questioned whether or not it was depression, masking itself as fatigue, so I asked my Onc. to prescribe me something, and give it a chance, and see if I improve. No such luck. The first drug, Effexor, made me extremely dizzy and the whole world would spin, all day long. I could not even drive, let alone function well, in my own home... So, next, I tried Celexa. I gave it a full, honest try and I did it for over a month, but to my amazement, I felt sadder, no energy, always tired, and lost my excitement to do anything...I pulled myself off of it and feel so much clearer in the head and can actually accomplish tasks, without sleeping the day away. I really wish the researchers could group it's CML patients to different side effects... and see why some of us seem to breeze through the side effects, while others' have such a hard intolerance to it. I haven't posted to the site in such a long time, since I've been really struggling with all of this while trying to raise my children and run a household. I know this drug has saved my life, but I've been really paying the price for it lately. Sorry to vent, but this has really sucked lately. I'm ready to sign up for a study to go off of the drug! Maybe I should move to Europe! US will never allow a study. What about Canada? Zavie or Tracey, maybe I'll become your neighbor! lol Sincerely, Lynn from WA. Dx'd 12/03 PCRU 400 mgs. Guest guest
Hi Lynn, Please don't hold back from posting on account of the struggles you're going through. When things are the hardest is when we need support the most! That's what we're here for remember? It's too bad that the antidepressants didn't work for you but there are a myriad of different one's out there. I know it gets frustrating to keep trying new drugs but eventually you might find one that works. Imagine if you did find one that worked, how much this frustrating process would have been worth it.... to finally feel better. I know it'll never be perfect, after all, you'll always have CML and you'll always be on Gleevec but if you try different antidepressants, hopefully, eventually, you'll find one that makes a difference....one that makes waking up in the morning just a little bit easier. Whatever you do, remember that we're here for you so don't hold back. Sometimes a good venting session can give you a temporary release and make you feel a little better. I have gained a lot I think as well for the reasons you mentioned. But also I asked the hemo..they said this is standard with all Glivec and a lot of it is water retention. So I have joined a swimming club that has a steam room and a Sauna and I am trying to sweat out the extra weight. I will let you know how it goes! Guest guest
thanks tracey! but i would like to ask if its alright to take gleevec even with an empty stomach??? i think the reason also for my gaining weight was the thought that i should take it with a full stomach...i am afraid that taking it without any food would damage my internal organs...especially my intestines...i don't know...i just fear that it would make things worst.... i am trying other alternatives like taking it after lunch so as i could avoid eating too much at dinner time...thanks Godbless..... Tracey dx Jan 2002 Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.
