Guest guest
thanks tracey! but i would like to ask if its alright to take gleevec even with an empty stomach??? i think the reason also for my gaining weight was the thought that i should take it with a full stomach...i am afraid that taking it without any food would damage my internal organs...especially my intestines...i don't know...i just fear that it would make things worst.... i am trying other alternatives like taking it after lunch so as i could avoid eating too much at dinner time...thanks Godbless..... melisa Tracey <traceyincanada@...> wrote: Yes, I too went through the " always famished " stage of Gleevec therapy. Guest guest
hi bil, i started gleevec december last year then started gaining weight 2 months after or february...i used to weight 108 lbs...now i am almost 140!! more than 30 lbs in 4 months..oh well... same here...i also now have a very round face and swollen eyelids which makes me feel awfull especially when people ( as in everybody i know) tells me how i look...i never tell them but i get affected with their comments. others they make a joke out of it which makes me feel bad....but i just try to ignore those remarks...i just feel heavy though...according to my doctor i cannot engage yet on strenous activities like exercising...she just recommended for me to do brisk walking for 15 minutes... thanks so much.. melisa willha46 <creative@...> wrote: Hi Melisa, How long did it take you to gain the 30 pounds. Do you do any excercise or walking or swimming? Do not feel depressed about the weight. I too have had several changes, my skin colour for example has become different and dark circles under my eyes as well as the extra weight especially in my face, but I try to look at this as a new phase in my life..a new chapter almost so maybe we look a bit different but really when it comes down to it, we are exactly the same people before the medication, The doctor has told me if the fluid still stays they can give a diuretic which should help but makes you go to the toilet a little more than usual. I have not opted for this route right now.. Good luck Melisa and God Bless.. Guest guest
Hi Melisa, I just read your post, and I have to say, it made me sad. I don't honestly see how you can allow your so called " friends " and " associates " to make fun of you and point out your weight gain or swollen eyes/face. It's not funny or joke material. This is your new life, and like it or not, you have leukemia. You can see for yourself how you look that day. You certainly don't need for anyone to point it out to you. You take a drug to save your life that makes you look different now. That's it. The people that I choose to surround myself with love me for who I am as an individual and a friend. They tell them they are just glad I'm still here on this earth. They say, " Better fat or swollen than DEAD! " .. and when it really comes down to it, it's true. I'd rather have a small handful of exceptional, true friends, or be alone, than to have to deal with insensitive, rude, and shallow people in my life. If the shoe was on the other foot, and your friend was diagnosed with a chronic illness, how would you treat them? With compassion or would you mock them? Just something to ponder. Guest guest
Hi to all, I have the opposite problem, I do not have appetite at all, I need to push myself eat so I can survive. Before I was diagnosed I had lost a lot of weight and I was suprised cause it happen all of a sudden, lost my appetite, I didnt even want to think about food. For the last few years I had normal weight around 60 KG, yet last year (assumed when the CML started) I lost a lot of weight and I was 53 KG I looked terrible and everyone was so suprised why I had lost so much weight. Now I eat just because I have to, and normally it is 2 meals per a day. However I cycle to work, 7 miles per a day and that gives me stamina to go on. I know that most of the physical activities make us tired very quiclky yet Im trying to find the perfect balance for me so I can cope with CML and all the emotinal downfalls. The idea itself that Im leading a " normal life " (working, cycling) has helped me a lot to overcome the challenges to think about myself as an ill person, and think about the worst. I have been through a LOT and most of the time I HAVE BEEN ALONE, without anyones support. I would like to thank to everyone cause you played an important role in my life in the begining, by reading your experiences and courage you offer in each and every post. Best wishes to all, Arta diagnosed 04/01/07 Gleevec 400 mg no children yet I am going to go through it with God's help next year and you played an important role in making this decision fischer <efrem_fischer@...> wrote: I know we have discussed this topic in the past but I am gaining weight very quickly and I need some support. Has anyone had that problem? I went from someone who could not eat primarliy because I had a spleen that was about three times its normal size and it was pressing on my stomach so I felt full all the time to someone who now cannot stop eating. Guest guest
Hi Tracey! Much love to you girlfriend! I appreciate your words of encouragement. I think everyone has different challenges of this disease, and it also depends on what phase of your life you are in. Raising kids and being sick takes on a whole new meaning. I'm willing to give a new med a try, but with the kids getting out of school very soon, for the summer, now is really not the time to try something " new. " With Celexa, I could sleep a solid 9 hours at night, wake up, get the kids off to school, and then go back to bed for another 3-4 hours. Then, by around 7:00 at night or so.. I was tired again. That is simply not living! Absolutely crazy! I'm want to have fun with my kids and hubby this summer. I will have to push myself, but they deserve it. I'm just going to see how I do, and in the Fall, when school starts back again, I may try something different. I'm just going to see how it goes! Big Hugs! Guest guest
Hi Melisa, The main reason we're supposed to take Gleevec with a full stomach is because it really cuts down on the nausea. If you don't have a problem with nausea, then I don't see why you couldn't take it with a smaller meal (like lunch or breakfast). Good luck, Tracey
Guest guest
I have been reading these post with interest. After I first started gleevec, I gained weight but this past year I have had difficultly maintaining my weight and have dropped 50 pounds. I have a lot of nausea and vomiting and no interest in food. So some days rather than dealing with the vomiting I just don't eat. i try but nothing seems to interest me. Between the fatigue and the other side of effects, I am just plain tired. Some of it I know is depression, and I have tried several antidepressents with nothing really working for me.I tried exercising to get more energy but that does not really help. I am so tired of taking medication to deal with the side effects of gleevec or the countless number of other pills they have given me. I feel like I have no life anymore. My Dr. had taken me off gleevec at this point for a month and is considering switching me to sprycel. Just lovely considering I just bought my three month supply of gleevec that i know have to throw out. To be honest with you i am tired of all this. I want an end to things. I am considering pushing my Dr. towards transplant. I am single and I live alone, this has gotten hard for me. I work full time and don't have the option of not working. So every day I push my self to keep going, and not give up. (A little bit of ritalin helps to.) This group has been a great support for me. I don't post often but I do read and it is good to know that I am not alone in this struggle. in Pa _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail to go? Guest guest
Efrem, Just remember--a day at a time. I have struggled with my weight too and it is partially fluid retention, which has gotten worse, the longer I have been on Gleevec, and also appetite. I am ALWAYS hungry. I have tried everything--the best for me is to eat multiple small healthy meals per day, making sure to include some protein in all of them. Please don't get discouraged by this--we are all fighting these battles right along with you. Take care. Maybe you're just making up for the time when you couldn't eat. Also, just having CML makes me want to eat somehow--it is a bursting forth of the life-force! You deserve to give yourself a little space--and don't sweat it too much unless you believe it is a serious health issue for you. In that case, talk to your doctor about it and maybe there will be some good ideas from that area. Protein seems to be the key for me shutting down my appetite. Since I started Tsigne 90 days ago I have gained 10 pounds.. I hate it. I am only 5 ft and I weigh 135.. I know I eat a lot. The Tsigna gives me a huge appitite. My husband can not believe how much I eat.but he thinks it is good for me. He doesn't care what I weigh. I Do!!!! When I can't fit in my jeans anymore I get frightened. I have been cutting back and trying to eat healthy. And I have been drinking a lot of water. I broke my foot about 5 weeks ago so I have not been able to do much exercise but now that my cast is off I will start. My son and his family bought me a bike for mothers day. I am anxious to start that.I HATE EXERCISE!!!!!! Let's support each other. INSTEAD I CAME HOME AND SCRAMBLED EGGS AND HAD A SMALL PIECE OF SAUSAGE, NO TOAST, NO BREAD. SO! My current weight has reached 180. I did go to weight watcher for awhile but to now avail. I don't eat alot at meals but I do graze alot during the day. A little here and a little there. I know the meds do make you put on weight also but can't blame it all on that. So I guess I just accept it and thank the Lord that I get up each day in remission. Hang in there.
