Guest guest
I was told that allergy shots are part of the Xolair protocol. I have been on and off allergy shots for 30 years and it has only been while on Xolair that I have been able to get to maintenance level. Before the shots would trigger an asthma flare, and even a couple of times, mild anaphylaxis. Now I occasionally get a large local reaction to 1 of the 3 shots, but not every time which is much improved. My allergist did mention that the goal for that practice is to get a the allergy shots done to the level we can try and stop Xolair. Not sure if I agree yet with that goal as my allergy shots don't cover all of my allergies, but we shall see. B. Guest guest
My allergist says that Xolair should be used in conjunction with allergy shots. In fact, it's not theory but they should help reinforce each other. Allergy shots will help to reduce the level of allergic reaction by retraining your immune system while Xolair will help to prevent that allergic reactions from happening. -- Dharm Guruswamy --- In , " wiesenstrasse7 " <terriball@...> wrote: > > Hello, > > I would like to get opinions on continuing allergy shots when on > Xolair. Guest guest
Terri, I'm like you - allergy shots kept me out of the hospital, but that was about it. I never saw the improvement others did, despite taking allergy shots pretty much continuously from age 3 to age 35. Also, as I approached 30, I seemed to have more trouble with minor reactions. I stopped taking allergy shots with my allergist's approval after six months on Xolair. Xolair has improved the quality of my life tremendously. It's a decision for you and your doctor, based on how well you do on Xolair. Guest guest
I don't understand - you're the third or fourth person in the time we've been running this group who's said their doctor's got a goal for them to come off Xolair. My doctor has NEVER said that. He and I are both so happy with how I'm doing on Xolair, neither of us would ever consider it until the next great thing comes along. It seems to me that would only be a wise course of action for someone who's had really good success with allergy shots - and it sounds like you've had plenty of trouble with them. Also, our bodies continually make new IgE, which can only be bound to Xolair while one is taking it. Guest guest
I agree. Xolair has been incredible for me. Thankfully my pulmonologist thinks I am the perfect candidate for Xolair and has no thought of taking me off, so the allergist will continue me on it until the pulmonologist says stop. I now have airborne anaphylactic reactions to eggs. This was getting worse over the years prior to starting Xolair. I do not expect to be able to eat eggs while on it. I would be nuts! But it does give me the time needed to get rescue meds in before a severe reaction fully develops if I am exposed. Breathe easy everyone. My 12 yr old non-asthmatic son has bronchitis right now and I am watching him breath at 50% lung capacity. Good thing he is young and strong. B. Guest guest
I guess the allergy shot decision depends on your MD. I am not on allergy shots and haven't been for 4.5 years. It was actually an anaphylactic reaction to allergy shots (loooooooooooong story) and my allergist-at-the-time's lack of concern that led me to my current allergist/pulmonologist who started me on Xolair. My current doctor obviously knows about my history with allergy shots and won't even consider doing skin testing on me(only blood-tests) because he's so afraid I'll react. So I've been on Xolair exclusively (in addition to my oral meds/inhalers & nebulizers) for about 3.5-4 years now and its worked wonders for me. On an unrelated note, I was recently hospitalized for pancreatitis following a series of weird reactions to medications (my kidneys had an allergic reaction and shut-down, setting-off the pancreatitis), and during that time the fact that I was on Theophylline never seemed to 'register' with any doctors and I inadvertently came off it. I feel totally fine (I haven't taken it for about 4 weeks now) my allergist/pulmonologist was fine with me being off it as long as my lungs sounded good and I felt fine. I would not be fine without Theophylline had it not been for Xolair so I count me being off Theophylline as a Xolair-victory. I'm still getting used to taking fewer pills in the AM and PM! Yay Xolair! Meagan > > > > Hello, > > > > I would like to get opinions on continuing allergy shots when on > > Xolair. What do others do? Guest guest
A lot like you I had anaphylactic reactions to allergy shots so I never continued on them for very long with the exception of when I was a kid and took them for several years. Unfortunately even then (when the allergies weren't as severe) they couldn't increase the dilution above the starting dose although they increased the amount maybe five times in those two years. The Xolair has helped tremendously for my asthma and pretty well for my allergies/skin and I asked my doc if we could attempt one last try for allergy shots now that I have been on Xolair for three years. I'm hoping that the Xolair will fend off enough of the reaction I've had in the past so maybe I can continue the allergy shots up to a beneficial level, if not...at least we gave it a shot (lol no pun intended) and will know that is not an option. Yikes @ the pancreatitis but congrats on the Theophylline. It was one of the few pre-Xolair meds that made a difference for me but I hated the stuff. The side effects were horrid and the continual blood tests to check my levels which never seemed to be between the 10-20 they wanted. The doc said it couldn't be helping at the low levels my blood was showing (@400mg/day) but if I didn't take it I was in an almost constant mild/moderate attack state. When we increased the dosage to 600mg/day, I felt like I was car sick or had morning sickness full-time. > > I guess the allergy shot decision depends on your MD. Guest guest
I don't know much about this but my allergist said that there is some evidence that taking allergy shots and xolair at the same time mya boost the benefit from allergy shots.
