Guest guest
If you got an asthmanex inhaler, those are reasonably safe and usually very effective. Singulair works much differently, and may take a few days to take effect. Normally I see effect from adding asthmanex in about 24 hours. Guest guest
Singulair doesn't work for everyone. Asthmanex is just another steroid inhaler. My doc says it has a slightly different steroid than Pulmonex.....tomato, tamahto. Guest guest
I think I may have sent a blank document. Sorry about that. I was wondering for how long he took the singulair before he decided it didn't work. Guest guest
Thanks, Addy. The thing is, I hate inhalers and would really rather take Singulair. But I suspect the inhaler is probably what I need right now. My peak-flow has dropped to the 250-300 range. Is there anything else I can do to get it back up? I exercise. Thanks again. Guest guest
Do you do any deep breathing exercises. I find those helpful. If you think you've got some mucus in there, mucinex/guifanesin can help break that up. But an inhaled steroid is the best way to treat the inflammation in your lungs. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids (unless otherwise indicated by some other condition). Feel better soon, Addy > > Thanks, Addy. Guest guest
the first time was quite awhile ago, but as i recall, it was several months not at the highest dose. this latest time was recently & he was given the highest dose 10 mg for a couple of months. the dr thought it was worth another try at the highest dose, thought possibly that my husband's body had changed over time too & might respond. sadly, it did nothing at all, but it also caused no side effects in him either. ________________________________ From: Adah Voigt <asthmatic50@...> Sent: Wednesday, July 22, 2009 6:29:21 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Supplemental meds I think I may have sent a blank document. Guest guest
my husband uses advair & it seems to work fairly well (it's a steroid inhaler too). my husband definitely responds to steroids. ________________________________ From: Carol Corley <floridabouvs@...> Sent: Wednesday, July 22, 2009 7:05:53 PM Subject: [ ] Re: Supplemental meds Thanks, Maureen. Guest guest
Be sure to use a spacer with any inhaler especially one which contains a steroid. Pursed lip breathing, rehab exercises, any exercise really when you are feeling well enough have always helped me to come to normalish pfts. Guest guest
my husband's peak flow has dropped too. his has been down to 220. he drinks a lot of water, uses mucinex. he can't exercise much due to his neurological problem & when he tries to exercise his asthma flares up. this is very hard on him because he was a fanatical exerciser before the neurological problem. what are the deep breathing exercises he could try? his chronic pain is in his ribs & abdomenal wall, also the muscles in his chest & everywhere fatigue with exercise. poor guy is between a rock & a hard place! ________________________________ From: pyle456 <jamcculloch2@...> Sent: Wednesday, July 22, 2009 7:30:05 PM Subject: [ ] Re: Supplemental meds Do you do any deep breathing exercises. Guest guest
i'm curious too, re peak flow readings. i have read that some people are in the 500-800 range. are they super human lance armstrongs or using a different type of peak flow meter? i don't have asthma & when i try my husband's peak flow meter, i can only blow 350 max. ________________________________ From: pyle456 <jamcculloch2@...> Sent: Wednesday, July 22, 2009 7:30:05 PM Subject: [ ] Re: Supplemental meds Do you do any deep breathing exercises. Guest guest
Have you tried using Vicks (either the rub or the nasal inhaler) or a steamer? I know these are old fashioned remedies but they've worked for me. On a couple of occasions the Vicks nasal inhaler kept me from the emergency room. Guest guest
Some people with asthma react poorly to Vicks and similar products that use a form of menthol as their main ingredient. I can't get any where near it. I have a hand-held nebulizer and vials of albuterol to keep me out of the emergency department.
