Guest guest
Hi all, I was diagnosed last week with Congestive Heart Failure. I've been looking at Xolair and have not seen this as a possible side effefct. My first Xolair shot was 1/3/09 so I wondered if there was a relation. Has anyone heard if there is a connection? If not, does heart disease contraindicate Xolair? Thanks Mike
Guest guest
Mike, Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I have never heard of that as a side effect of xolair. But, with any drug that has been out for only a few years, they can find things out later on. You should ask your doctor whether or not it is still safe to take xolair with congestive heart failure. They would be the best to tell you those things. Guest guest
I recall reading that xolair can alter Nitrous Oxide blood levels and I believe this has something to do with cardiovasular functioning but I am not a doctor. Straining to breath can contribute to congestive heart failure. I am very very sorry to hear this. Guest guest
Thanks Harold, My hospital is good enough to forward the test results both to the doctor who ordered the test (my internist) as well as to any I ask for, including my pulmonologist. I'll see the pulmo folks on 5/7. Mike McBride " Failure is not fatal unless you quit; getting knocked down is not embarrassing unless you allow it to keep you down. Guest guest
Mike, I started Xolair in October, 2003. June, 2007, I was diagnosed with very high blood pressure, which is well controlled with a relatively small dosage of diovan. My doc ran me through lots of tests, including a nuclear stress test. Nothing interesting came up. Both my GP and my pulmo agree that the high bp is another generous gift of the years of prednisone that I've taken. We're all different. I haven't heard of Xolair causing or being contraindicated in heart disease. You might be special, you might be the first one, who knows. One important thing to remember is that asthma attacks put strain on the heart by forcing the blood to work harder to move decreased levels of oxygen around our bodies. the way I look at it, I have to do whatever I can to protect my lungs in order to maintain my heart health. I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. If I were you, I would ask your Xolair doc to contact National Jewish. They did a lot of the testing with Xolair and they get lots of patients with multiple difficult diagnoses. If your doc consults with National Jewish, you should get some really good info. Let us know, and take good care of yourself. Addy Group co-owner > > Hi all, > > I was diagnosed last week with Congestive Heart Failure. Guest guest
Mike, I started Xolair injections in July 2008. In Nov. 2008 I was diagnosed with an atrial valve flow murmur & a pericardial effusion (fancy name for fluid around the heart). After many tests & doctor visits, my cardiologist believes the fluid was caused by too high of a level of synthroid (taken for hypothyroidism)and the murmur is a probably a result of years of high blood pressure. The last echo showed that the fluid is now gone. At no point in time did he or any of my other doctors suggest that I quit Xolair. Also my grandmother was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in her early 70's and lived to 102 - without too many problems. The heart issue certainly didn't slow her down. Good luck. Guest guest
Thanks Kathy! I probably needed to hear this last part more than anything else. I've been given way to much information on how only 50% make it 5 years etc. 102 is a great target for me to shoot for.
