it only took me 8 months or so to see some kind of improvement....but i've heard

it can take up to 18 months. what does your dr think? i'm sure its frustrating

just waiting...

giving details about their own asthma that are not relevant to my question, and

that is actually helpful?

I like this notion. Although JUST yesterday the New England Journal Of Medicine

reported that drugs that fight GERD (namely esomeprazole, Nexium) do not have an

effect in the treatment of asthma.

Aspiration can involve more than acid refluxed. If someone refluxes just about

anything in the stomach contents can reflux back up the esophagus into the

lungs. Also, if one suffers from esophageal spasm, poor clearance can also

result in aspiration into the lungs.

i'm wondering if nexium/aciphex only helps asthma if you actually have

GERD...but not as a preventitive thing. i have gerd (plus a " farm of ulcers " as

my GI put it) confirmed by endoscopy. i know for a fact when my gerd acts up, i

have trouble breathing, and feel like i'm breathing " wet " if that makes sense.

The article that came out last week in regards to GERD and PPIs and asthma

should be taken with /some/ trepidation. For your doctor to completely change

his prescribing habits is a bit reactionary, and keep in mind that this is one

study versus an entire body of literature.

clearly this is a controversial field, and if the patients your doctor is

treating have improved since they went on a PPI, then they should remain on

these medications.

A big thing to consider with this is study design. Investigators generally want

a relatively 'healthy' population, and one that is easily defined, in order to

properly interpret the results they find. Although may be argued that this is an

inherent weakness of studies in general, it is the best way to carry one out.

This is why changing prescribing habits based on one study is likely not the way

to go.

Hi

I have only been on Xolair for 3 months and I am finding my asthma symptoms are

way worse then they ever have been. My asthma and allergies were fairly

controlled with Singulair and albuterol. Now, I am finding I am using my

inhaler WAY TOO MUCH - atleast 4 times a day I have this irritating cough and

tightness in my chest daily. Have any of you experienced this? I know it's

only been a short while I've been on this, but my doctor says by month 3 you

should start seeing some results. I also seem to be more sensitive to the cold

air - having to use my inhaler because I am on my way to a full blown asthma

attack. Have any of you experienced this and if yes, did it go away after a few

more shots?? I'm a bit baffled that I am doing so poorly.

Thanks for any help!

It takes most people up to a year to see any results. I didn't get any relief

for 13. Hang in there, we are pulling for you.

Thanks for your reply.

I live in the Northeast and yes there is lots of pollen, but for the most part

I've been able to tolerate that in the past with singulair. I understand it

takes a while for Xolair to work for some people - my concern is my asthma

worsening. Do you know why half the people are not taking it anymore?
