Guest guest
Chuck, I'm sitting here reading this, and cannot think of a reason that would be true, unless it is the pesticides used on the produce. A lot of people develop a sensitivity to sunlight after handling produce. Chuck --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Try it now. Guest guest
For the past couple of months my face has been breaking out in a rash and I didn't know why. Now, as Spring merges into Summer, I've been outside in the sun wearing short sleeve shirts. My arms have broke out in an itchy rash that is like a mild dose of poison ivy. But I'm quite sure it's the sun since only my face and the top surfaces of my arm are breaking out and I haven't been in contact with anything that I can think of that would cause this problem. Now I'm using cortisone cream and a steady doses of Benadryl to manage the constant itching and that's barely solving the problem. I've been taking Xolair for almost three years and not only has it helped my asthma but also seemed to have helped with itching. But now none of the meds I'm taking, which includes Zyrtec on a daily basis, is solving this rash and itching. So I'm wondering if anyone else using Xolair is dealing with sun allergy and if they can add any information to my situation. I'm wondering if I call my doctor and ask for a coarse of Prednisone if it's likely to help? Prednisone does seem to work like magic on inflammations but there's usually a price to pay. Guest guest
An update: I discussed the sun problem with my allergist. She said to use a sun block lotion, which I hadn't been doing. But now I have some more news ... I've been clearing brush on my property. I can spot poison ivy and poison oak in a heartbeat but there's this sumac growing all over the place and I've always blindly assumed it's the non-poisonous buckhorn sumac. Now I'm wondering if some of it's the poison sumac species and if that might have been mistaken for sun allegy reactions. The stuff never gets more than three of four feet high before I rip it out so it never gets a chance to set berries or flowers which would let me tell for sure which species it is. The main clue came when my hand broke out recently soon after grabbing one stalk of the stuff barehanded and ripping it out. So now I'm wearing long sleeves and gloves when I head into the brush. I can only say that if this stuff is the poisonous sumac I'm amazed that I didn't have massive reactions to it and will have to conclude that all the meds in my system, including Xolair, suppressed the reaction I would expect (like I used to react to poison ivy before I developed an eagle eye for the three-leaved assault vegetation). Well, I'm still adrift in some uncertainty because I really can't tell the poisonous and non-poisonous species apart. Weeks into my problem my arms are still an itchy mess with massive numbers of little bumps and some bigger eruptions of varying severity. If anyone can tell me how to positively identify poison sumac before it has a chance to set those white berries I would appreciate it. All the pictures I've seen on the web identify it by white berries. I've never seen them. I think the shoots are too young before I remove them. > > > > > > > > > > > For the past couple of months my face has been breaking out in a rash and I > > > didn't know why. Guest guest
One more update ... I went to a dermatologist about the rash on my face and arms. The doc does think sun sensitivity is the culprit and now is looking for the cause. The doc thinks it could be lupus and sent me to the lab for a whole bunch of blood tests. He said the sun sensitivity could also be a reaction to one of the medicines I take and is reviewing my list. I don't see anything in the Xolair literature that points to it causing sun sensitivity. He also put me on a low dose of Prednisone. Now at least the itching has stopped but my arms are still a mass of little bumps. I also got some +75 sunscreen and put it on my arms and legs when I went out in the sun. The stuff smells horrible. I've tried to wash off the stench but the smells keeps hanging around. I guess it seeped into my pores. The bottle does list " fragrance " as an inactive igredient in the fine print. Stupid of me not to do some research for a non-scented product before running out to the store. Anyway, it looks like my theory about poison sumac possibly causing my rash was off base. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > For the past couple of months my face has been breaking out in a rash and I > > > > didn't know why. Guest guest
Getting some sun clothing would be very helpful. Coolibar has a throw that is very useful. Here is the link: http://www.coolibar.com/01010.html http://www.coolibar.com/index.html I love my clothes and use them every time I go out in the sun.
