Guest guest
For what it's worth, I'm an AH parent who joined this list a while back and I hardly ever say anything but I read what's up here, just every now and then. My opinion is that very little of what's written here is of benefit to a child dwarf and his family looking for practical advice, but I figured out a long time ago that's not this forum's purpose -- this is just a place for people to spout off about issues they care about, just like a million other discussion groups. And I say, have fun and have at it, y'all. What I am still struggling with is, where CAN people go to learn practical things for a teenager about driving, going to college, etc.? " Join the LPA " seems to be a common answer, so we did, but that didn't do anything except cost us money. So this POLP thing might be the way to go? Parents on the dwarfism list (was " my apologies " ) Fred, you twit, Tonya is on the POLP list. She's the one with little Knoah. Tonya, I agree though with Alyce and the others (and Fred mostly). Please stay. As you've learned, the dwarfism list is more raucous and I'm looking for other adjectives ... Anyway, as a veteran of the dwarfism list, from the 1990's when it was only one, one of the main reasons why it makes sense for the parent list (POLP) to exist is so there's a safe place for parents, esp. new ones, to discuss things without having to worry about offending anyone. Of course there are brouhahas on POLP as well, most likely because it's electronic and not in person, but they happen way less often. If you look at the archives of the dwarfism list, I'm guessing one could see a pattern ... I mean as soon as one sees certain kinds of new posts, one can kind of predict some of the responses (and from whom). Sometimes it's related to it being a hot issue (genetic testing, religion, the value of membership in LPA for dwarf adulst and/or certain tv shows ...), sometimes it's the phrasing. You can see that a bit on the POLP list too but the predictable stuff tends to be supportive things to new parents. I like the cross-fertilization of having AH parents on the dwarfism list and a few (well-behaved) non-parental dwarf adults and an assortment of us dwarf parents on POLP. For what it's worth, there's a list that's even more raucous (Adult-LP) Hope everyone has a peaceful week, remember it's MLK Jr's birthday in a couple days, his real one. **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
I don't know about the POLP list, but people frequently bring their " how do I do this " questions here (LPs and AH alike). The result varies with who's around to answer at the time, but I for one am tickled to be able to offer a clue if I have one. I learned to drive in the dark ages (1978) and was taught by a driving instructor who attached wooden blocks to the car's pedals. I went to a small college about two hours from home - a good step for me to gain some independence without being thrown into a large university. Of course, the appropriate answer about college depends on many things, but that is what worked for me. I think the main benefit of this list is sharing experiences - what ticks us off, how we dealt with something, what product works, etc. But answers don't always come instantly. I think Ruth owes me an apology! She accused Adult LPs of being raucous. I thought we were just out of control and frequently used dirty words. <vbg> [blatant plug -- anyone over 18 with a connection to the dwarfism community is more than welcome to join AdultLPs. Want more info? Email me at RMBJustice(at)aol.com.) Tonya, I hope you do stay. You are part of the community and this really is a good list. POLP will give you one area of info; this gives another. " So this POLP thing might be the way to go?< I think on occasion a tidbit of useful information does leak through on this list (amongst the interesting discussions). If you read it online and do a search you'll find that items like driving and college experiences do come up on a regular basis. But, I agree that for parents the POLP list is a wealth of information.
