Guest guest
Michele! I am downright avoided. I once stood at a Staples counter with my grand daughter and son waiting for someone to help me. The guy actually waited on new people who came up. I went to the check out counter and said I needed help over at the copy counter to sort of make my point. One of the kids finally said something and the guy reluctantly helped me build a business card and I paid them. In a mall with my kid sister a place was hiring. I asked for a form, they said they forgot to take the sign down. My sister went back and not only got the ap but was hired on the spot. No, she didn't take the job. Sometimes I feel bad because I simply don't want to think I am that alarming and intimidating that people refuse to give me service or lie about jobs, sometimes I need these things validated, just to be sure I haven't gone mental. What to say? I don't know. Yes, in America there is a law. Who wants to work for a place that needed suing just to hire you? Oh, yes, to pay the rent. Sigh. While I don't know what to say to you, I will validate you by saying, yes, it happens. Be Well and Don't Touch anything Sharp! Guest guest
Hi Michele, If I may respond - if I were you, I would think twice about applying or even considering working for this RV resort company. If a staff member is going to already say something that ignorant and careless to a customer, let alone a future employee - I think that speaks volumes about the company's standards and ethics. If the supervisor had hired someone like her, who else as stupid would they have hired? How would they treat you if you were to become an employee? So I hope you have many other companies you can apply for jobs and choose from. I think it's too easy for LPs to think that this is all they deserve when we certainly deserve just as good, or even better employment than those AP's who may not be as qualified. The #1 problem I hear a lot of my LP friends complain about discrimination are mainly service-oriented jobs (customer service, restaurants, retail, etc). Unfortunately unless you start looking for a job where the worker can be more " invisible " (meaning: behind a cubicle, in an office setting), it's hard to avoid discrimination. Or you can look for companies that have strong equal-opportunity rules such as the Gap, Starbucks, Target. (and no, this is not the same as a Quota, this is about making a living) Or perhaps you can consider taking some night or day courses at a local college that has a job training or recruitment program? Just let the comment go. Or the other route is you can go back, ask to speak to the supervisor and explain what happened. I bet that woman probably is unhappy in many ways for her to make such an asinine comment. But yes, I agree that it's pointless to file a class action lawsuit to a company you are applying for. Why work for somewhere when they're probably going to be even more hostile and resentful towards you? Whatever you do, good luck.
