Darcy,There is a huge amount of archives on the xolair user group.  I'd suggest

you read the ones at the beginning.  I was head nurse at a specialty pharmacy &

mu job was to track all patients starting xolair.  NONE of my people to this

day have had any negative reactions.Pat

Hello,

My Pulm doctor has been talking with me about Xolair but I am concerned about

anaphylaxis occurring when I'm home alone with my twin 16 month olds.

I'm currently taking advair 500, Qvar (2nd steroid inhaler), singulair,

claritin, albuterol neb daily, pepcid, calcium all for asthma. Unfortunately

have pneumonia again for the 4th time in the last 15 months. I take prednisone

tapers occasionally (now).

After yet another trip to the ER Friday I am starting to think this drug might

be worth the risk. I live in Alabama (grew up in Kenai) and am allergic to

everything outside and a lot of the typical indoor stuff too. My ige level was

around 800.

I'm wondering what I can expect and how often " y'all " hear about reactions to

the medication?

Thanks!

Hi Darcy,

I've been taking Xoair since Jauary 2009.  I've had no hint of a reaction.  I

see you grew up in Kenai...WOW!! That is where I live.

Hi Darcy:

My daughter is named Darcy, she's 45.

Xolair is a miracle drug, the side affects are extremely rare, and would happen

immediately, so get the correct info.

Agreed. It has been a lifesaver. I've never had the slightest problem with it.

I sometimes feel a little sleepy on Xolair days (3 shots every 2 weeks for the

last almost 5 years), but that is minor.

I have been on xolair since September 2003. I have never had any kind of

reaction whatsoever. I did have a ton of problems from so many years of

Prednisone. Thanks to Xolair I no longer have to take any steroids.

Do you think you could be checked for gerd, lpr and have your immune system

levels drawn since you are so concerned?

Also are you on allergy injections?

And finally get yourself checked for the chinese hamster or rat which is the

xolair ingredient.

Because after you are on xolair, skin tests, rasts, etc. are either not viable

at all or inaccurate.

Hi Mike,

We still have alot of family in Alaska and I am sure you are looking forward to

a nice summer. I had asthma in Kenai of course too, but nothing like living in

the southeast USA.

Thanks for the input. I'll let you know how it goes, seeing the doc on

Wednesday.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the input, I hate prednisone! I would like to experience feeling well

again, and think this is a good option to try. I'm encouraged by what I have

been reading on the group posts. Thank you!

Hi Leigh,

Negative for gerd, and immune levels ok. Not sure about lpr, but dr ran a lot of

tests. I tried allergy shots, couldn't get the doses to work out right and just

gave up. I'll ask about the hamster when I see the doc on wed.

The last time I had skin tests I passed out, so they won't get me to do a workup

again!

I've done a lot at home, took carpet out of bedroom, cased the mattress, etc,

but just keep getting worse.

Thanks for your input!

I was also told the reactions aren't necessarily when you first start the shots,

they can occur at anytime?

Yes, Xolair is a miracle drug that we prayed for to save our son's life!  My

son at the age of 11 began Xolair in 2003 when it was FDA approved.  He was

highly allergic to his surroundings and food (peanuts, oats, wheat, etc.) and

spent much of his time in the hospital or doctor's office.  Xolair allowed him

to begin allergy shots. His first Xolair shots cleared up the chronic hives

(wheals) that tormented him. Eventually, the endless list of medications,

hospital and doctor's visits stopped! He took his last Xolair shots in July

2009, and he is STILL doing great!  He graduates from high school on Thursday

night...without Xolair this might not have been possible.  I hope this has

given someone encouragement for a healthier tomorrow.

Wow - very impressive! After over 17 years of chronic hives, trigger

unknown, and periods of them getting longer and longer, hives getting worse and

worse, weaning off pred getting more and more stretched out each time, I have

not had hives in the almost 5 years I've been getting Xolair. This drug has

truly changed my life.

My understanding is that the risk that has been identified is an increased risk

of an anaphylactic reaction within 48 hours of receiving the shot, whether it's

thefirst shot or the 100th or whatever. My own doc takes issue with this as 1)

the Xolair population is a very allergic population and 2) reactions more than a

few hours after the shot may be hard to pin down as to cause, especially if the

patient has had one or more anaphylactic reactions BEFORE becoming a Xolair

patient.

No drug is without risk. Each of us has to do our own risk/benefit analysis.

Xolair has dramatically increased my quality of life and I feel strongly that it

has lowered my risk of anaphylactic shock overall. Certainly it has decreased my

need for prednisone, a drug with many harmful side effects over time.

Thanks Andy,

I had an anaphylactic reaction on Friday in the ER to the antibiotic they gave

me. All this time I'm worried about Xolair, and then wham it happens from

something else. I talked with the nurse today and asked her to get the paperwork

ready for when I come in Wednesday. Time to give it a chance.

This group has really given me some hope that in the next year my lungs can

heal.

Thank you!

I sometimes feel a little sleepy on Xolair days (3 shots every 2 weeks for the

last almost 5 years), but that is minor.

Darcy,

There haven't been a lot of reported cases of reactions but to be absolutely

safe the FDA put the black box warning on Xolair. If I was very prone to

reactions from medications I would a little apprehensive too.

My advice is to follow your doctor's instructions to the letter and DO let him

know your concerns. Sit down and have a good talk with him/her!

I had a reaction to a REGULAR allergy shot in the covered wagon days of the

early 60's. They took care of me right there in the office with what they

called an adrenaline shot. They gave it right in the site of the first

injection. OUCH!

I have been on Xoliar for almost 7 years and have never had any kind of reaction

whatsoever however, I DO carry 2 epi pen's with me just in case. This was a

direct order from my doctor. I have a nice little case that fits on my belt.

For me, the benefits of Xolair FAR outweigh the warnings. I am NO LONGER on

that nasty stuff called Prednisone that was slowly draining the life out of me.
