Guest guest
Alright all... I have a question for all of you on Xolair. This is the only new medication I am on. I've had 2 months worth of injections. The only other change in my medications is that the Coumadin was stopped as of last monday!..... I'm having a major problem right now. I have no saliva. I am having a VERY difficult time swallowing anything at all... even water! When I DO get to eat something... like today for example, I ate 1/2 of a piece of fish and it took 3 glasses of water to get it all down. I had to drink with every single bite. This has been going on for about 3 months but has recently gotten so bad that I'm eating a bag of halls cough drops every day just to keep my mouth and throat moist. I don't consider this anaphylaxis as I have no trouble breathing. I do feel tightness in my throat but no trouble breathing, no break out in hives or angioedema... just this HORRIBLE dryness in my mouth and throat and not being able to swallow!!! I went to my GI doctor today and he has scheduled my annual colonoscopy and is going to do an endoscopy at the same time. He tested me today for sjogren's syndrome!!! We should have results back by the end of the week! I'm scared to death this won't go away and its making me MISERABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not being able to swallow is so scary. Has anyone else ever had this reaction???? Anyone had this at all??????? I need some advise as I'm a tad bit overwhelmed, as you can all tell Much love to all! However, I received 3 weeks of relief so far, so I'm HAPPY!! My next injections are Monday and I'm hiving and swelling right now... I can't wait to for Monday to get here! Did you take Xolair for asthma or for Urticaria? If you took it for Urticaria, did you come out of remission? Guest guest
Hi !!! Thanks much for your reply!!! I'll try to get some OTC stuff tomorrow. I have lived with an anxiety disorder since this whole mess started 3 years ago and I do take Xanax regularly! I thought it might be due to anxiety... but even after I take my xanax, the dryness and trouble swallowing continues. I can't even swallow food without taking a gazillion drinks of water! It was so bad Sunday that I couldn't even swallow the little bit of saliva I had! I'm researching right now and it seems as though the Adipex might be the culprit... I'm only taking 1/2 of a adipex per day to try to get rid of this prednisone weight... and a major side effect of it is dry mouth. I'm not going to take one tomorrow and see what happens.....If I see improvement, I'll stop the darn drug and stay fat... Steriods are awful... and being overweight due to them is all new to me... but I'll stay this way if the adipex is what is causing this... it's MISERABLE!!!! I'm just praying it isn't sjogren's syndrome... One step at a time... I'm just grateful I don't have hives on top of this miserable feeling!!! Thank you so very much!!! Guest guest
Thank you, Mark!!!!! I'm hoping it's the adipex.. I've been researching and see this kind of reaction is a side effect of adipex. Guest guest
Good for you, Suzanne!! I'm going to take my sugar test right now! My dad is a diabetic and we've always been scared I'd become diabetic after 3 years of steroids... however, my sugar is always low... I'm going to check it to see what it is! Guest guest
, I've been taking the max dose of Xolair for many years now and I do have a mouth problem at night but I really think it's due to a long list of other meds I take, many which have dry mouth listed as a side effect. I keep a couple bags of Halls next to my bed and suck on one or two drops a night. And most importantly, I have a bottle of water sitting next to my bed, also to be taken as needed, and I usually go through about 16 ounces a night. Years ago, because of dry mouth at night, I was having a lot of dental problems. As my dentist explained, the tooth decay bacteria have a feast in your mouth when saliva flow is poor. So my teeth were rotting out. The solution was to get serious about flossing which was made easy with those inexpensive little floss sticks from the drug store or Walmarts and when I started flossing daily (and of coarse brushing daily) the tooth rot problem totally vanished. Once again, I want to emphasize that I can't link my dry mouth at night to Xolair, but suspect the problem is rather due to other drugs like Advair, Spiriva, Zyrtec, Uniphyl, Triamterenze (diuretic for swollen legs, designed to dry you up), etc. Ohhhh, and the really big reason for the dry mouth at night is that my sinuses swell shut at night for reasons unknown (but probably allergies) so I find myself breathing through my open mouth and you better believe that's going to cause a dry mouth, especially in winter when the humidity is low. So for that I take one inexpensive " behind the counter " pseudofed and when it kicks in after a few moments I sleep like a baby for five hours, with my mouth closed. Well, I hope I've helped you , and my first advice is to look outside of Xolair to see if there are things causing your dry mouth. > > Alright all... > > I have a question for all of you on Xolair. Guest guest
, have you reported this to the doc who prescribed your Xolair? I definitely would. While it's certainly possible that the dry mouth/throat issue developed due to other medications and only recently appeared, the swallowing issues you're having are a red flag for me. Talk about this with your prescribing physician and ask him to make some calls and see if other physicians have reported this.... Guest guest
This is interesting to me. I am waking at night on a more frequent basis with a mouth that is absolutely bone dry. I am not on any of the meds listed below, although some are probably similar. I use Q-Var, Symbicort, Ventolin, Albueterol (neb), 2 blood pressure pills, Lasix for edema, Imdur (slow acting nitro) amd a potassium pill. I sleep with a CPAP and don't breathe through my mouth at night anymore. I see the pulmo in a few days and had planned on asking him about the dry mouth. Guest guest
One other thing that helps me in a big way when I get dry mouth is to pig out on some tasty Jalapeno peppers, like in a can, from La Costena I think (get them in the Spanish aisle at the grocery store). And I make some Jalapeno hummus too, spread on some low calorie crackers. The Jalapeno peppers get the saliva flowing really good and it lasts for quite a while. > > Alright all... > > I have a question for all of you on Xolair. This is the only new > medication I am on.
