The reported anaphylactic reactions to Xolair have been very rare. While the

black box warning indicates that this can happen within 48 hours of getting a

shot, my pulmonologist is dubious. One of the reasons he's doubtful about the

accurracy of these stats is that Xolair is only for a population that is ALREADY

at high risk of an anaphylactic episode due to a severe allergy to one or more

other things, and that it can be difficult to determine the cause of an

anaphylactic reaction.

Each one of us taking this drug has had to do our own risk/benefit analysis. If

you read through the older posts, you'll see that Xolair has given many of us a

much improved quality of life. Also, read the FAQ in the " files " tab on the left

hand side of the page.

First off I'd like to say, I can so relate to numerous things you've

experienced, as I'm sure others in this group can. I know I was VERY scared

before I started Xolair. I had been in the ER over 40 times in a 5 year period

and hospitalized over a dozen times(on top of the ER visits) because of my

asthma before I started Xolair. BUT....the thing that sacred me most was when my

Pulmonologist said " you have suffered respiratory failure twice in a 6 month

period. Luckily both times you have been brought back. The next time you might

not be so lucky. This new drug may prevent you from ever going anaphylactic

again. " I took the chance and went for it. I was on Xolair from 2005 until

this past April. I've had to stop, due to insurance issuse and quite frankly,

my life is slowy going back to what it was pre-Xolair. AND I ***** hate it! I

CAN NOT WAIT to go back on it. Like many of us in here, I was able to get my

life back and then some,

when I was getting the injections. ( even self administered for 4 years!)

Just an observation here. And this can be of some use to others who want to

know about side effects PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go to the Xolair website ( and

even the FDA website) and read the information they have regarding it's

administration and side effects. You have to remember that not everyone is the

same and like Addy said Xolair is only for a population that is ALREADY at high

risk of an anaphylactic episode due to a severe allergy to one or more other

things. Also when you are on the Xolair site sign up to be an Xpansions member.

Most of us who have food allergies know what to stay away from. But there are

hidden things that we eat and we might not even know we are allergic to them

till we've broken out in hives or suffered anaphylaxis. AND..here's a fine

example of that. My 6 yr old is allergic to Red dye No. 3 & No. 40. (Candy such

as gummy bears, Skittles, Popsicles, ice creams and lollipops all have food dye.

There is also food dye in many cheeses, crackers and breads.) Thank God there

is a dye free form of Benedryl!!!

Since you have a history of anaphylactic shock when exposed to other things it

raises your risk of anaphylaxis from Xolair.  It's something you need to

discuss with your doctor and determine whether the potential benefits outweigh

the risks.  Given your history the risks sound fairly high.  Is there a chance

you can get your shot while being monitored by a health care professional for a

period of time?  I guess this is a decision you have to make with your doctor

but if I were in your shoes I think I would try it.  Your hesitation is

understandable, however.  Best wishes whatever you choose.

Tina, I have been on xolair for about 6 months now and I do know I hardly ever

use the rescue inhaler. I am doing alot better lung wise. I think you just need

to get it and stay to be observed by a medical person. Good luck.

May today be twice as good as yesterday and half as good as tomorrow. Jan

I reacted to regular allergy desensitization shots frequently over a period of 6

years. They could never get me past the basic level without a bad reaction and

giving me ephedrine and other high powered rescue drugs in the doc's office.

The sales rep for Xolair flipped and wanted me in doc's office for Xolair. I

refused. So, for 1-1/2 years I self injected Xolair at home with NO ALLERGIC

REACTION. No tightening of the chest, no wheezing, no swelling around the lips

or eyes or face. It's a completely different substance.

I believe there were other types of effects from Xolair (did help with asthma

and chronic sinus headaches) such as increase in body pain and frequent upper

respiratory infections but that's not an allergic reaction and didn't have the

danger of true anaphylactic shock.

AS for me, I have a love hate relationship with xolair. I was unaware at the

time I started xolair that I am low in the IGG subclasses which fight sinus

infections. A Xolair side affect can be increased respiratory infections.

About a month after I started xolair, I found my sinuses started draining

constantly this thick stuff which I have to hock up.

Thanks for the advice guys....I had an allergic reaction to a flee bite. It was

after nine months of asthma free. My doctor has suggested Xolair and I was

scared but the anticipation of the shot was worse then the actual shot. I did

not have any bad side effects ..Except I got really tired...and had a headache.

So I took the chance with the shot due to I am tired of steroids, antibiotics

and being confined to my house during the summer. The oil spill will also have

a large effect on me and that was also another reason to start it. Today My

brother and I went outside with the Heat index being like 105 and had NO

BREATHING PROBLEMS...First time in 37 years...Thank you guys for the advice and

time will tell..
