Guest guest
Dave, Your story sounds like mine. I was on 40 mg of pred for a long time. I also have had cataract surgeries but mine was several years after corneal transplants. (transplants were due to a disease called Keratoconus, not related to the pred) I became type II diabetic which I now have under control with diet, exercise and pills. Pred also made my bones fragile especially in the spinal area of my neck. In 1998 I had C-4 to 6 fused. In 2007 I had C-7 to 8 with a metal plate. I started xolair in 2003. two shots every two weeks. I was the first person in the state of Arkansas go get it. It took a year for me to see any results. Now I am pred free and back to a normal life. Of course, the damage has been done with all those years on pred. I thank the Lord that I no longer have to take it. Xolair has given me my life back. Guest guest
Hi Dave, I have had some of the same symptoms ... eye issues were bleading macula and I now have a spot in the middle of whatever i look at ... foggy thinking, lovingly called 'pred head' ... hunger that never quit, could not sleep, anger issues. What no one ever told me is that Pred raises blood sugar. Last time i was in the hospital for asthma they decided to keep me for a while. The admission work included blood draws. Those showed my glucose level was at 550. I felt fine but should not have. The doc said that with all the steroids I'd been on, I had developed a tolerance to the high sugar. I don't want to add to your worries, but it may be a good idea to monitor your glucose level. I've been on Xolair for 2 full years now ... instead of eating pred like it was candy, I now take it only sporadically. The longer I've been on Xolair, the less pred i need. I hope you can get off the pred soon. I think most of the symptoms are reversible, except for the eye damage.  Mike McBride Like the apple of Thine eye preserve me, O Lord God; defend me and beneath Thy wings shelter me from temptations.  St. Ephraim the Syrian ________________________________ From: " dc.miller@... I have been on it for about three years. I have had cataracts both eyes and surgery has corrected both, I have very thin skin and bruise and cut very easily, and my legs and feet swell . In addition my biggest issue is lost of muscle strength. My right leg calf muscle is wasting away to the point where it is becoming difficult to maintain balance and walk any distance ,physio exercise has not improve this. I am seeing a specialist they are notsure if this is the cause of this or not. I also have the brain fog thing some days worse than others. I have recently started Xolair and have just completed two months with no noticeble change to datet but hopefully in time I will.nd be able to get of the predisone. My questions are have any of you experienced similar side effects as I outlined and for those of you who the xolair has allowed you to stop taking predisone has this reversed the side effects of the predisone. Specifically did the skin condition improve? With exercise were you able to improve overall strentgth and did the swelling dissapear? I would appreciate any feedback you may be able to provide. Guest guest
I knew about the eye issues...I have glaucoma, which is hereditary, but exacerbated by prednisone, I, too, am fast developing a blind spot in the center of vision in one of my eyes, and no one told me about the blood pressure or the anger issues! Or the foggy brain! I learned quickly to tell my students when I was on prednisone and the personality changes that resulted from it. For about three or four years I was on pred almost constantly--I would be able to get down to 5 and then have a flair up. I hated myself during those years and am so grateful that I was able to keep my teaching job. Oh...no one ever mentioned becoming overly sensitive and the tendency to cry at nothing--oh, maybe that was just because I was a woman:-) So far I have not had bone issues, but I do have the warning signs of osteoporosis (spelling?) and so i take 1200 mg of calcium daily. I have now developed lactose intolerance, so when I go in to the doc next time, I'll ask about extra calcium that I had been getting in my diet...Yes, I'm glad to be off prednisone! Xolair has helped me tremendously!  From: McBride <mike.dmcbride@...> Subject: Re: [ ] Predisone side effects and impact of Xolair Date: Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 12:09 PM  Hi Dave, I have had some of the same symptoms ... eye issues were bleading macula and I now have a spot in the middle of whatever i look at ... foggy thinking, lovingly called 'pred head' ... hunger that never quit, could not sleep, anger issues. Guest guest
I have been on between 20-40mg daily for over 3 years. I have had weight gain, mood issues, crying, and horrible edema (now on lasix). I have been on xolair since April 1st, 2 shots every 2 weeks, so far I haven't been able to get off steroids. I am still hoping too. Tricia Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile -----Original Message----- From: " dc.miller@... Guest guest
i've been on pred since 2003, xolair since 2005. Still on pred. I sneeze and break ribs spontaneously. I have 5 documented fractures on the right side even with osteoporosis treatment. Goal is to get off pred one day. I'm on 11 mg and having adrenal insufficiency issues so even if my lungs are ok, the rest of me cannot function without pred. On the plus side, with lower pred, I no longer need metformin for my sugar. Ohh and I am still sob. Not as bad but still....xolair helps for sure but it will not provide a miraculous cure for everyone. C ________________________________ From: " mom2alexnabbie@... Guest guest
My pulmonologist is so concerned about my prednisone usage--weight gain, diabetes, cushings and then addisons also when tapering, spinal compression, etc. that I am going to National Jewish in Denver for several months so he can monitor my taper and see me twice a week. It's scary. ________________________________ From: <carrie72583@...> Sent: Tue, November 30, 2010 8:26:30 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Predisone side effects and impact of Xolair i've been on pred since 2003, xolair since 2005. Guest guest
I saw you mention eye issues and I thought I would mention that they are treating macular degeneration with shots in the eye. They use a medicine that was used for colon cancer and give shots in the eye. My mom has been getting shots for several year now. Otherwise, she would have lost her sight.  I have been on xolair around 5 years.  Haven't been on prednisone since...much less sinus infections too. ________________________________ From: Adah Voigt <asthmatic50@...> Sent: Tue, November 30, 2010 1:43:17 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Predisone side effects and impact of Xolair  I knew about the eye issues...I have glaucoma, which is hereditary, but exacerbated by prednisone, I, too, am fast developing a blind spot in the center of vision in one of my eyes, and no one told me about the blood pressure or the anger issues!
