Dave,

Your story sounds like mine. I was on 40 mg of pred for a long time.

I also have had cataract surgeries but mine was several years after

corneal transplants. (transplants were due to a disease called

Keratoconus, not related to the pred)

I became type II diabetic which I now have under control with diet,

exercise and pills.

Pred also made my bones fragile especially in the spinal area of my

neck. In 1998 I had C-4 to 6 fused. In 2007 I had C-7 to 8 with a metal

plate.

I started xolair in 2003. two shots every two weeks. I was the first

person in the state of Arkansas go get it. It took a year for me to see

any results.

Now I am pred free and back to a normal life. Of course, the damage has

been done with all those years on pred. I thank the Lord that I no

longer have to take it.

Xolair has given me my life back.

By the time I had started xolair, I had been off of pred on a regular basis.

My allergy doc worked on a combination regimen of tablets and inhalers until I

was able to get off of pred except when I developed a respiratory infection.

The problem is, I was having up to four a year and he didn't like giving me the

antibiotics that often, nor the prednisone that often.  When he suggested the

xolair, it had only been on the market for three years.  I was eligible and

since I have been on xolair (four years +) I have had three infections but only

had to take pred one of those times.  I just got over an infection, but with

the mucinex and a strong antibiotic, I did not have to take the prednisone.

For the first two years on xolair, I did not have an infection at all.  Then

the doc lowered my dose--once every six weeks instead of once every 4 and that

is when I began having trouble.  I have been back on the once every 4 weeks for

almost a year now and

I think it will still take me another month or so to regain what I had before

he lowered the dose.  But no prednisone!  However, the one side effect that

doesn't recover is the eye issues.  However, I am 72 and the doctor said that I

should outlive the effects of the glaucoma if I continue to take care of my

eyes.
