Guest guest
i believe some discoloration is normal because of the oils of the skin. we were told to use nothing but alcohol for cleaning, so i'm not sure if the dish soap could be adding to the problem? chances are when you go in for an adjustment they'll shave away the parts that look a little dirty. that's been the case for us so far. hope that helps! hollymum to 8-month-old twins: alex (in docband since 1/5/09) and max (no helmet required)On Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 10:59 PM, so545462 <so545462@...> wrote: My son has been in his helmet for a week now- four days of 23 hours. Guest guest
I'm concerned about the combination of Dawn and wintergreen alcohol, but if you got the okay on that from your ortho, I guess it's okay (However, I know that all three major band manufacturers - Orthomerica, Hanger, and Cranial Tech - have specific instructions that say only to use alcohol, and I've heard the wintergreen variety can discolor the foam and/or irritate the skin). Having said that, we used only alcohol to clean my son's bands and it still turned brown/dirty. It's just dirt and grime from wearing it 23 hours a day. You can try scrubbing at the spot with a dry old/rough washcloth first, before using anything else on it. The course cloth can get a little more of grime off before tackling it with anything else. Also, I scrubbed the alcohol in with a soft bristle toothbrush, which often helped get at the dirtier spots. Guest guest
Ours is the Danmar brand and were told just use a bit of baby soap. Wipe it down with a wet cloth. Scrub the crap out of it with a bit of baby shampoo. Wipe clean with wet cloth. Dry with cloth, then let air dry (in sun if it's out) for at least a half hour. We've had some discoloration here and there, but it all comes out with the scrubbing. We often have a stinky head by the time she's ready for her bath, especially if she gotten warm and sweaty for any length of time. Everything is smelling fresh, clean and stink free when we put the helmet back on. Guest guest
As long as you are following the ortho's direction, getting the helmet clean enough and the soap you use doesn't irritate your kid's head, I wouldn't worry about it. Most people use either alcohol, soap, or both and have no issues. We were told we could use alcohol after as well if we thought it needed it, but just the mild baby hair & body wash soap does the trick for us. His Cranial plastic surgeon told me that many people have used Dawn dish soap since it is antibacterial. I am so confused and there are so many ways to go about it. Also it seems as if diffrent orthos give conflicting advice on this.
Guest guest
Those are the DOS (dreaded orange spot) They are from the oils going rancid. It could be from using oils that are old or using oils that have a short shelf life. You can help prevent this by adding ROE to your oils after you open them at 1%ppo and also adding it to your oils as you do your soaping at the same rate .. HTH Carol brown spots Can anyone tell me what the brown or orange spots that sometimes appear on soap are and how do you provent it. Is it caused from super fatting the soap? Guest guest
Ah, the Dreaded Orange Spot. It is caused by oxidation of the soft oils in your soap. It is not caused by superfatting. You could add EDTA or ROE to help prevent it, if it happens often enough. Here's a great site that explains everything: http://cavemanchemistry.com/HsmgDos2006.pdf. Guest guest
I have been on xolair for seven years with excellent results, however, I have been getting an awful lot of brown spots on my body, including my face. I know these come with age and have had a few the last five years or so but I seem to getting more and more and wondered if anyone else is experiencing this. Thanks, Donna
Guest guest
I do not have the brown spots but I have tiny cysts on my body. Just little bumps here and there. I showed them to my primary care physician and she said that a lot of patients that take shots for different chronic ailments are experiencing the same thing. ----- Original Message ----- From: dhorwitzs <azhorwitzs@...> xolair users < > Sent: Wed, 16 Feb 2011 05:37:48 -0000 (UTC) Subject: [ ] Brown Spots I have been on xolair for seven years with excellent results, however, I have been getting an awful lot of brown spots on my body, including my face. Guest guest
At age 72, I have had some on my arms and hands, but so far, none on my face. My dermatologist told me it was from not wearing enough sunscreen and from not using a skin lotion with aqua glycolic acid in it. When I use a scrub once a week, and use this lotion, they fade some, but never go away. If the brown spots really bother you check with your dermatologist.  As a side note, I had some before I ever started on xolair! And, the skin doctor will burn off some of the larger ones because she determined they could be pre=cancerous.  Just my words. If the brown spots are bothersome, check with a dermatologist. Guest guest
I've been on Xolair for 5 years or so and yes, I have lots of brown spots, many which my dermatologist says are dysplastic nevi and some are removed from time to time for biopsies. One on my leg came back from the lab as being melanoma in the making, but prevented with very minor surgery. However, I'm of light skinned Scandinavian decent and was often severely sunburned as a child and this combination is suspected of being the culprit, nothing to do with Xolair. They were there before taking Xolair, but are becoming more prominent with age. And my 94 year old mother who never took Xolair is covered with brown spots and nevi. Do see a good dermatologist to review your concerns and keep in good health. A simple whole body check can clear up any concerns. Surgical removal of any suspect " brown spots " is almost nothing, and a good dermatologist has a sharp eye for the bad ones. If any of these things do develop into melanoma without being treated beforehand, you're in big trouble, so don't play around. > > I have been on Xolair almost seven years with excellent results, however, I noticed in the last year I am getting an awful lot of age spots all over my body. Could this possibly be from Xolair or am I just aging. Anyone else having this problem? Donna >
