Guest guest
Hi - Everyone's tolerance for pain is so different I would think that the answer to your question is something only you can answer for certain. had an osteotomy, plantar fascia release and heel cord extension surgery. He was on Tylenol/Codeine for about 10 days and then was done with the pain meds. He was totally non-weightbearing for 8 weeks. Had a walking cast for another 2 weeks. The second surgery (which was the same trio on the other leg) he was again non-weightbearing for 8 weeks, 2 weeks in a walking cast and is now in a walk-out boot because his heel cord unravelled during surgery and he needs additional support. As it heals better he will then do some PT. He took the Tylenol/Codeine for 3 weeks after this 2nd surgery and still takes an occasional dose after he has been particularly active. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Way to go Jon. Each candidate for surgery is different, and the outcomes vary as well. I'm all for wheelchairs/scooters for those who need them to enjoy life. I know that at some point I will return to the wheelchair I was married to for over a year. It is not a pleasant thought, but it sure beats being 6 feet under pushing up daisies. Congrats to you for a marvelous attitude. Guest guest
Hi . I had 6 procedures (tendon transfer, arch lowered, toes, heel straightened, ankle ligament tightened up) done in Dec. almost 9 months ago. The only thing that bothers me is a callus on the outside of my foot. I need to go get the orthotics adjusted and it helps if I wear my shoes instead of being barefoot - nothing that I take any medication for. I was 40 years old when I had the surgery. I took pain pills for the first 2 or 3 days and after that Tylenol. I did keep my foot elevated for 4 days only putting it down to go to the restroom and shower. When I stopped waking up to take them I weaned off of them during the day. Pain was minimal for me - prayed a lot before the surgery. I was on crutches 6 weeks, in a cast 9 weeks and then went into an AFO. It took a total of 5 months to be out of the AFO. They really wanted to protect the tendon transfer. My foot looks great and the ankle stability is wonderful. The hardest part was the 6 weeks on crutches. I would check into a knee walker, it works great. I will more than likely have the right foot done Dec 2009 - should not be as many procedures as the left. Good Luck. Vicky
Guest guest
Thanks for all the insight, folks. Not sure if it encourages me or scares me! Guess the bottom line is I won't know about need for pain meds or length of rehab until I get there. Guess that makes sense. I don't feel like I have much of a choice about doing this. The docs always said to wait as long as I can and then when I went back to the ortho earlier this year he asked why I hadn't got to him sooner! Not sure sooner would have mattered, but at this point it's surgery or I will eventually need an amputation. I agree with accepting life in a chair if that's your fate, but would rather work to avoid that. I'm having a hard time as it is taking care of myself, and hope to make that easier. Guest guest
, You have my prayers and support. Your attitude is good, and I'm sure it will help with your surgery and rehab. I've always believed in mind over matter, and often times it has produced incredible results. Get " pumped up " (mentally and spiritually) on the day of your surgery. Listen to the theme song from the " original " Rocky movie, and you should be good to go. It works for me. Mark

Guest guest
Hi Pete, I have a fusion from L4- S1. The only problem with operating to remove the scar tissue is the high incidence of recurrence of the scar tissue. In severe enough circumstances, this operation may be performed for that reason, but it's very uncommon. I had two diskectomies and two fusions and I scar a lot, but do not have the problems you spoke of. I would consider hardware removel, but where you have pain down your leg and numbness, I would rule that out. Have you had a CT and MRI recently? What have you done to try to cope with the pain? --- --- Pete <smokie1952@...> wrote: > I had fusion at L5-S1 last January . Guest guest
I have had both MRI and CT. they showed nothing. Also had EMG,which according to 2 DRs. the scar tissue is choking the nerve causing the problem. > I had fusion at L5-S1 last January . Guest guest
Do they know the location of the scar tissue that is wrapped around the nerve? I did some exercizes at PT after my surgery called " nerve gliding " and it was because scar tissue was doing the same thing to me. It involves moving the nerve back and forth through the scar tissue to " unstick " it. It must have worked because I don't have the same pain. I know I have some scar tissue, I can't put my chin down to my chest, but I don't have pain from it. -- --- Smokie1952 <smokie1952@...> wrote: > I have had both MRI and CT. they showed nothing. > Also had EMG,which according to 2 DRs. the scar > tissue is choking the nerve causing the problem. > > > > > > > I had fusion at L5-S1 last January . No probs whatsoever. I will tell you that I sure was glad to be OFF prednisone when I had that surgery. Pred was the reason for my ruptured disks. C-4 to 6 fused with bone graft in 1998 and C-6 to 7 with bone graft and metal plate in 2007. Thanks Prednisone. grrr I also had a gall bladder removal in 2004 one year after I started xolair. No probs at all. Group: If you are going to have elective surgery, it is wise to tell your surgeon that you are on xolair. It is sad but many non allergist/pulmo docs STILL have no clue as to what xolair is. Doug group founder
Guest guest
Hi Mark, I had sinus surgery (actually revision of a sinus surgery that was done incorrectly pre-Xolair) in January, my pulmo was happy that I had my Xolair dose something like 2 days pre-op and my surgeon was totally un-phased by it. Of course, just due to the fact that I do have asthma, my pulmo required this 'simple' surgery to be in the hospital instead of at a surgery center but I'm sure with a hip replacement you'll be in a hospital anyway. Immediately post-op I did have an asthma issue from being under general anesthesia but I had informed the anesthesiologist pre-op that my lungs 'going nuts' was a possibility and he was prepared for it. I've recovered 'gorgeously' according to my surgeon and, if anything being on X (375mg every 2wks) helped me to be able to better deal with the recovery process. I hope your surgery goes smoothly, Meagan > > Dear Group, > > I have been taking Xolair for about 14 months now and am extremely pleased with the outcome. Guest guest
When are you getting your packing out of your ear and having your follow-up? I think mine was about 3-5 days after, can't remember exactly. I think you should be fine. Is your wife or partner going to help drive, cause you may have some dizziness? I would take ear plugs for the shower and ear covers (you can pick-up at the beauty supply store). I would pack dramemene for the car ride just in case. Pack your own pillow and be prepared to sleep on your opposite side or your stomache. Guest guest
my wife/partner/headache will be driving. But I this is my chance to pass on a this little vacation which will inevitably end up with me following my wife/partner/headache around on a shopping spree in the Hamptons, NY. I live 10 minutes from a ton great New England beaches already! Why in the heck would I want to waste my time driving to the Hamptons? Thank you CToma, you saved me at least for a little while.
