Celebrex and other cox-2 inhibitors do not cause bleeding in the same way that

traditional NSAIDs do. So it should be ok to take.

Joint Replacement

Subject: Celebrex before THR

I'm having RTHR surgery on December 8.

My Doctor's PA said to discontinue Advil, Aspirin and other NSAID's 7

days prior to surgery, but that I could continue Celebrex right up

until the day before surgery.

Has anyone else been told this?

Ed,

Interesting. I can't wait until they tell me whether I have to discontinue

Celebrex before my LTHR in February. I go to a pain management doctor for

radiofrequency treatments/steroid injections to my neck for arthritis pain, and

am required to discontinue Celebrex 5 days before those treatments.

And let me tell you, the last two days of the five are miserable (if I ever

wondered how effective Celebrex is).

It would be great not to have to discontinue it before surgery.

My husband's OS had Greg taking two Celebrex per day the week before THR surgery

and orders to coninue two weeks after surgery. He's never been on Celebrex

before.  Greg had his surgery Nov 19 08. Yes, he's on day eleven.

As far as getting into the car, he did have a bit of trouble because he is 6' 1 "

with long legs. The seat would only go back so far.  He hung onto the OS bar the

hour drive home.  The leather seats did help with sliding sideways to get in and

out.

Thank you everyone for your quick responses.

Sharon, did your husband take two Celebrex together or one in morning

and one in evening?

My surgeon is using metal on metal and uses the anterior approach

(front incision rather than side or back)which is supposed to be less

painful, quicker recovery, and fewer restrictions.

Wish me luck. I'll let you all know how it goes.

My husband took the Celebrex one in the morning and one at night.

Wow, the anterior approach!  That's great.  That's what I wanted for my husband

but didn't

get referred to a surgeon that does this approach.

Greg got the metal on metal Depuy S-Rom, the larger femoral head with the

lateral approach.

Surgery was at 7:30 a.m. Wed morning. It lasted 2 and half hours.  He pushed

himself to meet all the requirements to come home asap.  He was discharged at 11

a.m. Saturday, the 22nd.

The surgeon is old school (sorry Dr. Trick, if you're reading this...) and

insists upon changing the dressing himself.  He likes to see for himself if it's

oosing.  If it's not oosing, he leaves the incision onpen.  This is what he did

with Greg.  Dr says showering is okay, pat incision dry.  It did fine.  Staples

come out Tues morning.  Bummer we have to fold Greg back in the car and drive an

hour to get there.

He over did it Thanksgiving, showing off how good he was feeling.  He took a few

steps without his crutches or walker.  This put him in a tailspin, spending a

day and half in bed.

He has been sleeping in our bed and our bedroom is upstairs.  We have a spiral

staircase and it's tricky to manuever.  I hold my breath watching and walking

with him.

Good luck, Ed. Please do as you're told (not like my husband) and heal fast.

Hugs,

Sharon.

Wow! What kept him in bed for the day and a half after Thanksgiving?

Pain?

Other than that, it sounds like he's doing great!

Unfortunately, I think I'm kind of like your husband, but I will try

to listen to the Doctor.

Thank you for your kind thoughts.

Yes pain, but mainly tendon and muscle spasms.  Fired those puppies up, is what

he did.  It sure had me scared.  I kept asking where the pain was exactly.  I

didn't dare ask what number was his pain, he would've gone through the roof at

that!  He hates that pain number chart, even knowing it helps give a picture to

the dr's and nurses.

You'll do fine, Ed.

My surgery is Dec. 9, good luck with yours. My surgeon here in Costa

Rica said to only discontinue the aspirin..which I don't take. I take

Ibuprofin and Celebra-our version of Celebrex.

Usually Ibuprofin (Advil) is discouraged, also.
