Hello everyone, my name is and I am a new member. My

husband and I live in Shaker Heights with our two sons, Sam and

. Sam will be 4 next Saturday; he was diagnosed with mild to

moderate ASD in April 2003. is 16 months old and so far seems

to be developing typically.

To tell you a little about Sam ... he is verbal but can't really have

much of a back and forth conversation or talk about things that

happened in the past or will be happening in the future. His biggest

problems are an inability to attend and his lack of socialization

skills. As I mentioned, his language skills are also delayed. We

have been working a lot on self-help skills but that too is not age

appropriate. He has been in ABA therapy at home since last July. It

has helped a lot! He can now follow directions, and his eye contact

and joint attention are much better. He is developing more language

too.

We started the GFCF diet in February and everyone who knows Sam

agrees that this has made a HUGE difference in him. He is so much

more alert and engaged. We are also supplementing with Super Nu-

Thera, probiotics, DMG, zinc, and essential fatty acids. We just

started methylcobalamin injections last night. (I am hopeful that

this will make a big difference!)

Are any of you working with local doctors who follow the DAN!

protocol? Do you have any suggestions about how to get all these

supplements in your kids? :) Also, I think we may have to do the

yeast-free diet on a trial basis and I am freaking out at the

prospect of having to eliminate the fruit juices and applesauce that

I use to get him to take his supplements.

Thanks for " listening " and I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hi ! and welcome to the list. I'm Marotta and my son Bobby has ASD with hyperlexia. He is 5 years old and will be attending Kindergarten in the fall. It sounds like you are doing so much for your little one now! When Bobby was 3, we started ABA and a GF-CF diet. I have to tell you I am/was a bit skeptical when it came to therapies that did not have multiple double blind studies to prove their effectiveness, but when our neurologist suggested the GF-CF diet based on what we had observed in our son, we decided to give it a try. After all, it wasn't dangerous and was only inconvenient. I am very glad that Dr. Margaret McBride did suggest it to us because we saw significant improvement in our son within 2 weeks. Last summer, when Bobby was 4, we did an elimination diet with our son to see if he reacted to any other foods, and were surprised to find that corn, carrageenan (found in some soy milks, rice milks, nut milks) and sodium methyl cellulose affected him. Dr. Waickman in the Akron area helped us with that diet.

We are currently trying Super Nu Thera for Bobby. The jury is still out its effectiveness. What benefits did you see in your son?

I understand the talking about things that happened in the past. This past year, that has been an IEP goal for Bobby. And we have been working on it at home. He has gotten much better on that issue.

Marotta.

Hi ,

Welcome to our group! It's very nice to meet you.

I read your letter and thought I'd write you back about the DAN doctor, I'm going to take my son Davey to a Doctor that we recently found that supports the DAN protocol. He also is a pediatric doctor who specializes in autism. I'm yet to know more about him and hoping he is everything we need for our son as far as a DAN doctor. My son is also gfcf over 2 years and we also follow the regimine of supplements that have been very helpful.

Have you heard about the AutismOne conference? It will be a great conference covering everything we as parents need to know to get our child through everything covering all biomedical treatments, schooling and every issue imaginable. I'll be attending and I hope to meet other parents in our area there.

Well, I have to be brief for now due to time. I'll let you know more about the doctor tomarrow or the next day, I'll send info on the AutismOne conference to the group as a reminder that way you can see the info.

Take Care,

n
