Guest guest
Here is a topic I have never seen talked about on this group. My dad is finally receiving me and my healthy eating choices and things because he has come to a critical point in his life where he feels horrible and has been for way too long and it is getting worse and he is afraid he will never feel good again. I was with him last week and that helped his heart because he is lonely. My mom and his dog both passed within the last two years and my brother has estranged himself from him. When I went up, I always take my house along. This trip also included my newest healthy endeavor of a kombucha brew. I had been preparing him for this introduction. The very first day he drank some he told me it it was " opening him up. " So daily drinks of it thereafter, and with a little more necessary coaxing, I have come home without the jar of kombucha!!! This is the first of any such victory like this. He also has come to say on his own that he needs to start eating better. He actually asked me questions about food choices as we walked thru the grocery store. I was touched by that. :-) He is interested in getting a Vitamix, but he caught his breath when I told him the prices I have found them to be. I only suggested this blender because I know he will be most happy with this once he has it and starts using it and sees what it does. I wonder if there is a place anyone knows of to get it for less than that $450 price tag and still get the warranty. I know there is ebay where I can get one cheaper, but I don't suppose the warranty will come along with any one I could order from there. Or is there some other blender out there that pulverizes just as well as a vitamix that is not as pricey. I am open to any suggestions. Guest guest
I'm always nervous about doing business through the mail. This is my most expensive purchase yet and I would much rather deal with a store. Their return policy is so much easier. I do not understand why these products are not sold in stores. I found this about the Healthmaster and it makes me recoil. The thing she says that makes me recoil is that " the problems that were addressed with the company were not fixed and so they are continuing to sell a faulty product. " Plus the warranty is very limited. It is on the motor only. The problem this woman had was not covered under warranty. The factory reconditioned Vitamix really does not bring the price down much. I found new Vitamixes on Discountjuicers.comfor the same price of $379 with free ground shipping. There have got to be a lot more juicers on this list. Guest guest
I bought my Vitamix over a decade ago. I love the machine. I love the customer service. Eventually, I will buy a newer model. I agree that the vitamix is not a juicer. Juicers remove the pulp, seeds, skins, and fiber, leaving pleasant tasting sugar water.. Juice without fiber is not as healthy as fruit smoothies which contain all the natural fiber. See the video I posted a while back. So I would never buy a juicer. With my bad teeth I can't eat salads, but with my vitamix, I make liquid salad smoothies which are both healthy for me and easy to slurp down. Guest guest
My vitamix is simple to clean. I empty out the good stuff, add hot tap water and a dash of dishwasher detergent, and turn on the vitamix. Dump down the drain, repeat with plain water. And everything is clean. Guest guest
Hello, I bought my first Vitamix in 1994, my daughter has it now. It had a design flaw and a $85ish dollar piece kept having to be replaced. They replaced it for the first 7 years, no problem. THis product is NOT dishwasher safe!!!! This includes the new stuff. Now I have had my second Vitamix for about 3 years. The design flaw was fixed, but it never seemed as sturdy as the first one. I had to send it back about 6 months after purchase, they fixed it, but I didn't have use of it while it was shipped off. I did get a great deal at Costco. The company stands behind their product. The next time I make a purchase I will look at the Blendtec and compare to the Vitamix. I don't know which I would purchase. Had I only had my first Vitamix, I would suggest Vitamix. Have fun shopping! > > I only purchased the health master. Three of them, one for me one for mom and one for a friend. All of them used daily for making fruit and vege protein smoothies. While I agree that a blender may be easier to clean, I absolutely *loathe* how frothy the 'juice' is coming from a blender - it literally makes me gag. Alobar - as to your comment about thickness - you never thought of simply adding a little water until it was at a consistency you liked? Anyway, like I said, whatever floats your boat... I have always been a quality over quantity/convenience type, so it is worth the extra cost/hassle to have a much higher quality 'juice' (yes, I learned a long time ago about the need for the pulp)... Guest guest
Hi, I am kinda new to the list and have mostly been reading the posts and have learned quite a bit. I wanted to make a quick comment on this discussion. I recently bought a Blendtec, which from what I read is more of a competitor to the Vitamix. When I was researching the HealthMaster carafe wasn't BPA free, I am not sure if that is concern but for me with two toddlers it is. I think there is a HealthMaster Elite which is BPA free but I read too many negative comments on the product. I know several folks that own the Vitamix and love it but for me I didn't care for the tamper to have to push the food down and have one more thing to clean. The Blendtec supposedly has more horsepower because it doesn't have the tamper. I like the Blendtec for the ease of pushing a button and being able to " walk " away. Also if I wanted to blend dry goods (like own flour) I only need one carafe. But I do know the warranty of the Vitamix is better than the Blentec which only has a three year warranty. You can google Blendtec vs Vitamix and get a bunch of reviews. Also I have been able to blend the raw greens/fruits to a juice like consistency. Just need more water and/or ice. My guys like the smoothie aspect (prob because they are 2.5) so when adding avocados, for instance, it has the creamy texture. If you belong to Costco both companies do road shows so you can look at their (Costco's) website. A friend bought her Vitamix from them for about $340ish I believe and it has the full 7 year warranty. I don't know how much the Blendtec costs at Costco as I bought mine online. Guest guest
Hi All, I've been sitting here trying to figure out why on earth anyone would want to pay $300 or $400 for a blender when you can buy a perfectly good one from anywhere from @$50-$100. Here are a couple of highly rated: Hamilton Beach 54245 @$50 http://tinyurl.com/3bqldma Kitchen Aid @$90 http://www.consumersearch.com/blenders Personally, I've had an Oster (I paid @$40) for several years and it works great. I use it every day for smoothies that include frozen bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. It will also grate ice. I also make a great beet borscht and/or gazpacho at least twice a week. In addition to tomatoes, the gazpacho has a lot of raw veggies like onion, garlic, celery, and peppers. It seems to be able to puree just about anything as long as you add a bit of liquid (juice or soup stock). I just can't see why you would need anything that cost 6 to 8 times as much that probably won't last that much longer or produce 6 to 8 times better results. When mine wears out I'll probably get one of the above - or another Oster if it has as good ratings by then. Just my 2 cents. Best, Dee
Guest guest
Dee, thank you for your two cents. I need help thinking this through because there are just too many blenders, and juicers made today. And I have only been able to eliminate a juicer because of the pulp extraction issue with them. My experience with blenders in this price range you suggest is that they are not strong enough to make a smoothie out of vegetables or to break the cell wall. I have had three or four in my lifetime. So I thought I had to go to a higher-priced blender to accomplish what would be able to make a smoothie out of everything in the garden. For instance, my latest blender, that I have had the longest and have liked best, is a Braun. I have used this for a lot of things, though I never used it daily. But it will not make a smoothie out of solid vegetables or even leafy ones. It would leave the skin of fruit floating in pieces in the drink. I have even tried to put the pulp extracted from my Omega juicer into my Braun to try to break that up and make it drinkable, but it does very little if anything at all. I don't know what borsch or gazpacho are, so I do not know how my blender would do with that. I have never made meals with my blender. I am not a cook. I have only tried to make smoothies and grind seeds. It does fine with soft fruit like bananas, but I have been on an anti-parasite diet and cannot eat most fruit. So if I throw a piece of pineapple in there, it will only break it down so far, leaving a thick glass of slop to drink. Let me ask you, what kind of blade does your Oster have? Is it like a plane propeller with just two tips, or does the blade assembly have four tips? I have learned lately that the propeller style blade efficiently pulls the food down into the single blade where it all gets chopped up. The four-tip blades make it float. That piece of knowledge seems to make sense to me with my blender. But then again, everyone says their blender is superior because of this or that feature. I don't know which way to turn. ________________________________ >>>Personally, I've had an Oster (I paid @$40) for several years and it works >>>great. Guest guest
Hi Lynn, The blade assembly of my Oster has 4 tips - two bend upwards and two bend down. I do notice that it pulls food down pretty easily. What I find works best, however, is the order in which you place the ingredients. I like to put the frozen items or raw veggies in first and then add a small amount of liquid and puree till smooth - then I add the softer items and the rest of the liquid and finish blending. So far this has worked very well. The only thing I wouldn't do is to put in a whole onion or other whole veggies. I cut them into inch size pieces or so. The only thing I've noticed about the high priced blenders is that they will take whole veggies. But you have to decide how much that's worth to you. In the end it's your time and money. At this time in my life I have more time than money :-). But if I were you I would check out that KitchenAid KSB560: http://www.consumersearch.com/blenders quote: " Users praise the KitchenAid blender's consistent performance and durability, and professional testers agree, saying it aces performance tests for crushing ice, pureeing and making smoothies. Guest guest
I have a Vita Mix, and it's really good, but the Health Master is also supposed to be very good too, and less money than the Vita Mix. ________________________________ From: Tanstaafl <tanstaafl@...> Coconut Oil Sent: Wed, April 27, 2011 7:14:57 AM Subject: Re: Shopping help > I am actually looking for a blender because I have experience with a > juicer and I do not like the fact that a juicer separates the pulp > from the juice. Guest guest
I have had my vita mix for over 10 yrs, and never had a problem. ________________________________ From: Jules. <cocheesie420@...> Coconut Oil Sent: Tue, April 26, 2011 11:46:45 PM Subject: Re: Shopping help I only purchased the health master. Three of them, one for me one for mom and one for a friend. All of them used daily for making fruit and vege protein smoothies. Have used it just as they do on tv. When I called about the blender that died, no questions other then do you have the same shipping address. Guest guest
Dee, Your blade assembly is like my Braun. The power on mine is 120 V/50 hZ/525 W, which is about .656 hp -- if I figured that out right! It may be that mine is simply not powerful enough to break the pulp. I am trying to learn all about this now. The Kitchenaid is 720 watts which equals .9 hp. Another thing I was looking at for my purchase for Dad was I thought I needed to go to a 2 hp blender, and those all seem to be the ones that are hundreds of dollars. I would really like to find one in a store to try with the pulp from my juicer and see if it purees that. That is what would sell me on a lower model. Does yours already do up the pulp? I know my Dad will not stick with a blender if it does not break up the thickness and give him a nice drinkable consistency. If my blender would do that, I would just get him one like mine.
