Yes, this pretty much is a concern for me but it seems that most every blender

company uses polycarbonate for the carafe. Very few use glass. My Braun has

glass. I don't remember anymore when I bought it, but I am sure that was why I

made that purchase.

If you belong to Costco both companies do road shows so you can look at their

(Costco's) website.

I live in a highly metropolitan area and have not even begun to scratch the

surface of business that are around here. But I checked my Yellow Book and it

does not have Costco listed under department stores. If it goes by something

else, you can let me know. Is it like a SAM's Club, or is it a moving road show

business? What is Costco?

I used to own a Hamilton Beach. It never handled fruits or veggies

the way a Vitamix does, unless I added chopped them up fine before

blending and added lots of water or juice. I also burned it out in

about a year. My vitamix is still gong strong after more than 10

years.

great. I use it every day for smoothies that include frozen bananas,

strawberries, and blueberries. It will also grate ice. I also make a great beet

borscht and/or gazpacho at least twice a week. In addition to tomatoes, the

gazpacho has a lot of raw veggies like onion, garlic, celery, and peppers. It

seems to be able to puree just about anything as long as you add a bit of liquid

(juice or soup stock). I just can't see why you would need anything that cost 6

to 8 times as much that probably won't last that much longer or produce 6 to 8

times better results. When mine wears out I'll probably get one of the above -

or another Oster if it has as good ratings by then. Just my 2 cents.

I've had my Vitamix for 22 years, and it has never failed me.

, I suppose you have one of the stainless steel models then, right? If it

is, there are sure tons of those on ebay but I did not know if Vitamix has

changed the power or blade or something else besides the aesthetics when they

discontinued that one and went to the one they have today. I had never heard of

a vitamix before January of this year. Does it work any differently?

Hi Lyn,

I do have one of those " classic " models. My mother has one of the newer ones and

I tried it out and I really couldn't find any perceivable differences in the way

it worked. Perhaps Vitamix adheres to the adage, " If it ain't broke, don't fix

it " ? ;-)

I suppose you are right. That is why I guess they never jumped on the 3 hp

bandwagon that started up a few years ago. Maybe I will try to get my Dad to let

me try for one of those cheap. The only thing is, if it breaks, can parts be

had?

I'm not really sure because I've never needed parts. Another option is you can

get a newer reconditioned model, which is less expensive. It would probably be

easier to get parts for that.

Hi Lyn,

Yes, it is like a SAMS club, a big warehouse type store. Both the Vitamix and

Blendtec have rep's that go to various locations to " pimp " their products so to

speak.

Here is a link for their locations.

http://www.costco.com/Warehouse/locator.aspx?cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Right_Nav1-_-Top_l\

ocations & topnav= & whse=BC & lang=en-US

You don't have to be a member to watch the show, you can just tell them you are

interested; however if you do purchase I do believe you need to be a member.

Here is a link from Vitamix to find where they are holding their next live

demos. http://www.vitamix.com/household/shows/

And from Blendtec. http://www.blendtec.com/road_shows

Also I think the reason most raw enthusiasts use a higher power blender like the

Blendtec or Vitamix is that it breaks the cell walls and grinds the

veggies/fruits better than a reg blender. I know the green smoothies I have

made I could not do with my reg blender and I had an expensive brand name. With

a reg blender I believe you are left with pulp and the Vitamix/Blendtec grinds

everything - even skin. For instance grinding seeds from fruits, which hold a

large nutritional value. I think it depends on what you want to do and make.

It looks like Blendtec will win out with me of the two because their road show

is closer, tho still quite a distance away. All VM shows are down around

Baltimore MD and I am not brave enough to ever drive that far into that area by

myself. I don't know these roads and traffic patterns yet and my reaction time

is not quick enough to stay on top of the pace I would need to drive.

Thank you for the links. I am sure Dad still won't go for this, but I will keep

them for myself because I think I will be hard pressed to go much cheaper on a

blender for what I want for myself and that is a blender that breaks the cell

wall and demolishes pulp.
