Guest guest
Hope you find out and maybe you should call your dr and see if they know. Sharon LeVine Pre-THR Pain Experience - is this normal?? I had a strange and painful experience yesterday, and wondered if it's normal for people like me who have an arthritic joint/bone spurs. I'm awaiting a LTHR on February 4. Normally, I'm in some pain--I can't walk much without considerable discomfort, but I have reasonable joint mobility and I'm not falling down screaming in pain, either. My hip joint is bone-on-bone with some bone spurs, but I've managed to gimp along ok. Although, I admit, I take Vicodin once or twice a day, especially if I have to stand or walk much distance (grocery shopping, cooking, airport, etc.). Well, yesterday my husband and I were walking down a slippery street in Lake Placid, NY and I was hanging onto his arm, as usual--when suddenly, my hip shot through with pain. Not a 5 or a 6; more like an 8 or 9. I could take very small steps leaning forward--could not straighen my leg, stand straight, rotate my leg at all or move it behind me as I walked (hence, the very small steps leaning over from the waist). We could barely make it back to the hotel. When I first sat down, I had almost no mobility in the joint without signinficant unbearable pain. Slowly, after resting awhile (and popping more Vicodin) I regained the amount of motion and ability to walk that is more normal for me in this pre-operative state. Does anyone have any idea what happened? It almost felt like something was out of place, like a piece of moving cartilege caught in my joint or something. It was awful. Has it been like this for anyone else pre-THR? Jane ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ No virus found in this incoming message. Guest guest
Before my resurfacing I was reduced to a walker all the time. Would not have been able to walk down a street, let alone a slippery one. My hip just wouldn't allow me to do it. But if I did, I would probably had the same reaction since I was bone on bone. I could be as you said, if you had any cartilage left, or the bone just got stuck on the other bone...with no cartilage stayed there. I just couldn't do as much as you are doing and maybe you shouldn't either. But now, after having both hips resurfed, I'm as good as ever, no more walkers and great mobility. Thank God for technology. Good luck, Hollie > I had a strange and painful experience yesterday, and wondered if > it's normal for people like me who have an arthritic joint/bone > spurs. Guest guest
Yes, I've had a similar experience at my son's bus stop. It is pretty sad when a 7 year old has to help his mom home. > > I had a strange and painful experience yesterday, and wondered if > it's normal for people like me who have an arthritic joint/bone > spurs. Guest guest
Hi Jane, sounds to me like it dislocated. (maybe partially.) The symptoms you describe were exactly what I had when my hip prosthesis dislocated last week (4 months after LTHR). Except I was lying in bed when it happened. Since you recovered somewhat and were able to put weight on it, I'd guess it didn't come right out. Did you slip before it happened? - maybe a sudden awkward movement? Maybe others here have had experiences closer to yours. Good luck with your surgery on 4 Feb! Guest guest
Hi Jane, When I bend at the hip I have the same problem. I am unable to stand up straight and the leg wont extend behind me. So I am stuck walking hunched over and only taking little steps forward with that leg while the other leg plays catch up doing the steps from behind, if that makes sense! Im not booked in for the THR just yet (although I probably will soon) but my joint is really rough. The little cartilage that is there is completely chewed up and riddled with spurs, I always assumed it was bits of torn cartilage catching or flapping back that caused the problem. I usually have to lean on something and take the weight off and just wiggle/dangle/rotate/persevere until the hip unlocks. > > I had a strange and painful experience yesterday, and wondered if > it's normal for people like me who have an arthritic joint/bone > spurs.
