If your platelets are high it could indicate a related disease, essential thrombocythemia. They are not generally hereditary though a propensity toward them can run in families. A mutation occurs, usually later in life, that causes the pluripotent blood stem cell to keep on making cells unchecked. Symptoms are vague, besides itching, a red face for PV, headaches, visual migraines. Heart attacks and strokes are the biggest concerns when the blood is too thick. Once diagnosed there are treatments though it is a chronic long term disease.
