Lee,

I never had an MRI for my CI evaluations. I only had

CT Scans. The CT Scan should be much easier on you

than the MRI's were.

I had a catscan done at my local hospital and carried the proofs to Dr. Labadie

for my appointment in Vanderbilt. The passages to my cochlears were clear so a

MRI was not necessary.

, You are correct. The ct scan is for the bones and the mri is

for soft tissue imaging. I didn't have to have an mri prior tomy ci

either.

The dr merely wanted to make sure the bone structure was ok to go

ahead with the surgery and to see how much actually bone he would

have to drill out in order to get the implant in.

Many people have ossification and this test helps the surgeon to

know if he needs to use a different implant or not.

Hi Lee -

I've NEVER had an MRI - not required by my CI Clinic - I did have a Cat Scan

and all was fine -

Pleased I have the N24 with the removable magnet though - just in case - in

the future the need for an MRI arises.

Good Luck on your journey back to the hearing world!!

A couple of questions occurred to me after reading Eve's mail:

If you implant the 'good' ear - can you still use hearing aids in the good ear

while waiting for the 'hook up' or in doing the implant is the residual hearing

lost forever?

What happens if the implant doesn't work? Is 'rejected' by the body or

faulty...? Are there any cases of this? I have read case where one user didn't

like the implant and had to have tons of 'mapping' and hard work before finally

being 'happy' at the level they had after 2 years...

With all the talk here on Bilateral implanting, Eve is there a chance where you

can opt to go with the weaker ear first with option to do the other ear in

future?

Hmmm?

Researching CI

Testing

Hi All,

Well, I had another round of testing Tues. and I am a CI candidate

now.. The biggest decision for me is do I implant my right ear which

has not heard speech in 21 years.. Reason unknown, but i had a car

accident and fractured my skull and ruptured my ear drum. After

everything healed I could no longer hear much at all with that ear..

My Audie is betting that when I had the accident the cochlear lost

some fluid and the hairs were damaged very rapidly.. Not sure if the

Catscan will show this?

My left ear has about one frequency that has hearing left. The info.

I am getting is that the better the ear that's implanted, the better

chances the results will be.. Still there are no guarantees and I

will be completely deaf when I don't have the processor on.. The

audie has recommended I do the good ear but it is still my choice in

the end.. Naturally I want the best chance at success.. I will see

the Surgeon next and have a catscan..

Is there anyone here that has a CI been able to put on a helmet with

the CI in place? I don't want to be completely deaf when I ride

snowmobiles and motorcycles :o) The Audie said maybe I would have to

Modify my helmets a little which I would not have a problem doing.

Jules,

I am LOL at being called Eve :o) It's Eve " L " like Evel kinevel..

Anyway: No use of AIDS ever again once surgery is done. If Implant

fails the residue hearing is lost forever.

According to my Audie, Strong Memorial in Rochester NY will not do

bilaterals.

I am a Technician that works in the semi-conductor industry for Kodak

so I asked, and have studied a lot about how the CI works.

All the info. I am getting as far as which ear to implant is based on

the hair cell roots or base in the cochlear itself.. This is where

they position the elctrodes that produces the pulses that are then

sent to the brain and processed as sound.. Since my hearing loss

(nerve deafness) is directly related to the LOSS or damage of the

hair cells then I may have less success that a person who has perfect

hair cells but has a problem with the other structures of the ear.

The rest of my ears have perfect function, but that does NOT do me

any good and means nothing with the CI as it by-passes/replaces all

other functions of the ear.

If I am wrong on this, could anyone on here correct me please.

Thanks,

Evel with an L :o)

Cool.. I ride snowmobiles a lot and once i get the CI i will be

completely deaf unless I am wearing it so I would like to be able to

wear it when i have my helmet on..

Thanks.

Hi Evel,

My daughter has very profound SNHL which means she has no more hair

cells in her cochlea and that is the reason why she was an excellent

candidate for a cochlear implant. The elecrodes replaces those hair

cells. People with healthy hair cells usually do not qualify for

cochlear implants. When they insert the electodes usually the

remaining healthy hair cells are destroyed so it does not matter if

you had some left or not. My daughter also had ossification and she

is doing great with her CI she hears VERY well with it. Before her CI

she did not respond at 110db with the most powerful hearing aids and

now with her CI she responds at 15 20 and 25db.

This is how I understand it.

I wish you the best,

Louise mother of (8, CI)

I've had an audiology screening and an MRI. I've been told I'll have to have

a physical exam within 30 days of the implantation. That's it so far.

I am in Canada and the only tests I had were audiological tests and a CT

scan. I will need a general checkup just before surgery but that's all we

get here.

All this talk about balance testing has made me

wonder what other tests have people had besides

the audiology testing and a CT scan? That's all

I've had and it seems to be all I'm going to

have.

Thank you for your marvelous review of our CD. You showed a real
