My factory is certified-organic under a customer for VCO production using fresh

centrifuge process. Our experience with organic certification is not consistent

with the following contents of the quote below:

1. " organic certification agencies do not distinguish between copra and

non-copra oils.. "

Organic certification is specific to a product. Organic certification for

coconut oil is not the same as organic certification for virgin coconut oil.

2. " organic certification agencies.... they do allow for solvent use under

certification rules. "

Use of chemical solvent in extraction of coconut oil from copra is not allowed

in organic certification.

Subject: Coconut FAQs

Can we get rid of the solvent use and 3 week old copra coconuts in our

" organic " -designated coconut oil?

" organic certification agencies do not distinguish between copra and non-copra

oils and they do allow for solvent use under certification rules. In effect,

organic certification of coconut oil is not a guarantee of naturalness in the

sense that it is promoted as such in first world countries.

Tony, Quality First International does business all over the world as the

largest importer of coconut oil in North America. They will have an

international perspective.

Duncan,

When hubby and I were still residing in the Philippines, we made coconut oil

without use of heat or any solvent. It was made from fresh coconut never copra.

This oil did not have water/moisture and lasted for many years as long as it is

not exposed to sunlight and heat. Many people bought from us we could not keep

up with the order. They found it very healing compared to other oils. This oil

is so good i even used it to make creams which healed a lot of skin diseases,

etc. When we moved here, i gave the recipe to my sister for use of relatives.

She made it following my recipe to the letter but, my relatives told me it is

not the same as the ones we made, why? I think the vco used made the

difference.

The problem with our oil is that it is too labor intensive.

Duncan, I have not heard about them buying from the Philippines. Where are they

buying their oil from?

It is simply unbelievable for me that the organic certification does not give

distinction between coconut oil (produced from copra), and virgin coconut oil

(produced from fresh coconut meat). As unbelievable as use of chemical solvent

(for coconut it is hexane) in extracting the oil is allowed in certification

rules. I doubt if it is really done in other countries. Unless it is fraudulent.
