I had Total Knee Replacement on my left knee on July 8th. Here we are

2 months later and I am still in alot of pain. I can not go up and

down stairs without using a cane, much less walk without a cane. I can

not lay on either side when I sleep at night. I have to sit up in bed,

with pillows behind my back, for support. This has been a terrible

recovery for me. I am in pain every single day and night. Now my good

knee and my lower back are beginning to hurt. I expected alot more

from this surgery. I am worse than before the surgery.

My knee and foot are swollen pretty tight and have been for several

days (2 wks post TKR), keep it elevated and use ice religiously. The

support hose were just too tight, cutting into the leg. Any

suggestions?

Elevation and ice can help. Are you rotating your foot/ankle when sitting

and doing the ankle pumps.are you doing the quad sets when sitting.motion

can help move the fluid through and out.your pt can try e-stim with the ice

which can help.also the pt can wrap your leg with ace bandages (special

technique) from the ankle up to the knee which kind of pushes the fluid up

and out.mine has been doing that and I would leave the wrap on between

visits, take it off to shower and then he would re wrap it.

Hi Margaret,

I had bilateral TKR not long after yours.....7/16 and 7/21. Everyone is so

different in their recovery path. I have some " stiffness " in my left knee. I

attribute mine to a couple of things: my left knee by far was the worse of the

two knees pre-surgery secondary to contractures greater than 45 degrees. My

muscles still need to work to get full extension and that translates to a

feeling of " stiffness. " I had a pre-existing case of lymphadema bilaterally

(but more pronounced in the left leg) secondary to a history of cellulitis

(three cases between 1984-2008). About seven weeks post-surgery (beginning of

September), I ended up back in the hospital with a new case of cellulitis in my

left leg, concentrated on the back of my leg above the knee. I was hospitalized

for four days. I could feel quite a bit of swelling in my left joint up till a

couple weeks ago. Now, the infection related swelling has subsided enough that

it doesn't feel as swollen/stiff as it did, but I am not getting as good of

numbers with flexion as I would like to at this time. I attribute some of my

lack of flexion to effects of the swelling.

Have you talked with your surgeon yet? If you aren't due for an appointment at

your surgeon's office soon, give them a call. You might need to go in for an

intermediate appointment. Or, perhaps, you can talk with someone from his

officeon the phone. My surgeon has a person designated to take questions over

the phone, and then his back office assistant or one of his two Physician

Assistants calls with the answer(s).

Hope you are feeling better soon. I know I still have pain issues I'm dealing

with. I'm not as good at this point as I thought I'd be, but I do feel better

than I used to. When I went in for my three month appointment Oct. 21, the

Physician Assistant I saw said everyone recovers at a different pace, and it is

not unusual to have some pain/discomfort even six to twelve months post-surgery.
