Glad to hear your husband is doing well. As another bilateral tkr, I am

also glad to have done it at the same time. If you don't have a good leg to

stand on at least afterwards they are both getting better at the same time

lol. Please keep us informed on his progress.

Rich,

You have become the new poster child for ectomy patients!  I wish there were

many others who could share that distinction with you, but as we are all

different, I hope you can bask in your remarkable recovery for a very long time!

Recently I reported on a terrible back problem that had rendered me into the

invalid category, being unable to walk, work, and carry on various other bodily

functions we all take for granted.  Morphine and valium administered by IV did

not help, but 5 hours later, something else given thru the IV began the

" turnaround " for me.  I continued on the oral medications for two more days and

now I find myself once again without any back problems.  I know it started

several weeks agao with saving my mother money by shoveling her driveway, but at

its worst stage, I was a completely helpless, pathetic human being.  Thank god

for strong enduring marriages. I could not have made it through without Cyndee

helping me.  Unrelated to my marriage I have been under extreme stress for the

last 4 months, and though (amazingly) it has not affected my eating, perhaps it

manifested itself in some other way.

Hi!

I am out of the hospital after an 8 day stay. It feels wonderful to be out. I'm

staying at my in-laws for awhile and may go to my sister Rose's in Ann Arbor for

a few day since my kids are on Spring Break next week.

I am swallowing well - (what a joy), eating very small meals and not pushing at

all (Per the advice of wise Board members & under the careful watch of my sister

Rose who has been absolutey wonderful throughout this entire time).

I lost 8 pounds while in the hospital and was down about 5 going in (and was

considered skinny before any of this) so I have some work to do in making sure I

take on plenty of calories each day. But I will pay close attention to how my

stomach feels and take it slow.

Rose made an intereting point to me. She said your esophagus probably contained

a certain amount of weight which was lost as soon as it was removed. I may have

been carrying some weight since it never fully emptied. Now the weight I put

back on will by pure, good, healthy wait.

I am on a soft mushy diet for 1 to 2 weeks. Still no complications. Pain is

moderate. I have oxycodone for it but haven't needed to take much.

That conference in Germany does sound really cool. Not only for the expert

information but just to be around that many achalasians would be a riot.

Thanks again for prayers, support, ...... and everyting else.

Love,

Rich

Hi ,

It is great to read your post. I was wondering what was going on with you and

concerned - waiting expectantly - for your update. I am so pleased the problem

is resolved. Stress is insidious and can be a culprit or instigator in so many

ways. And it's so prevalent everywhere. Even when I think I am relaxed I've

noticed other layers of tension exist deeper within. I know I need to get better

at achieving deeper levels of relaxation - free from stress.

Anyway I am very happy to learn you are well.

Hi Rich,

I think you are the luckiest of all of us by far! I had severe dumping syndrome

in the beginning. My body had gone so long without food before my esophagectomy

that my whole system was shocked. I am still puzzled that your Doctor didn't do

a thoracotomy. That was my most painful incision. The one in my chest and neck

barely bothered me. (Good drugs though). I'm so happy for you!

No tubes at all? No J-tube for a month?

You are so lucky!!!!

All the best,

Hi Rich

Glad to hear that you are at home even with your in-laws. I am so pleased that

you are also taking things slowly. You mentioned how your stomach feels when

eating and that is a very good indicator of when you have had enough for now.

Please listen to it and when you start to feel full stop and try again in an

hour or so. As I said listen to your stomach it will tell you when to eat. Good

Luck.

Hi ,

My procedure was called a transhiatal esophagetomy. About a 7 inch incision in

the belly and 3 inch in the neck

I do have a j-tube for a month.

I have some intenstinal cramping but I don't think I've had anything that would

be called dumping. I've come close, feeling nauseous, etc, but when I sit in a

recliner and relax, the feeling has passed. It's happened a couple of times.

I will call you sometime!

Hi Rich,

Try to stay away from dairy products if you are experiencing cramping. Believe

me, you'll know if you have dumping syndrome because you'll be making a mad dash

for the bathroom! lol The cramping is your first warning sign to stop drinking

anything. Eat crackers and it will go away.

I'm so happy for you!

.

I didn't use my J-Tube at all when I came home. I was eating several small

meals and doing well right away.

Hi ,

Thanks for that information. The cramping can really hurt but I'm not making

any mad dashes to the bathroom. I can't eat crackers yet because I'm on a soft

mushy diet for 1 to 2 weeks. But actually, 1 week is tomorrow so.... I've lost

2 and 1/2 pounds in the 5 days I've been home from the hospital. I've been

eating as much as I can. It feels like all the time but I think I may be able to

eat more in one sitting. I've been very cautious, fearing the dumping syndrome.

Eliminating dairy takes away so many great protein/calorie options. Is there

anthing you can take for the cramping so you can continue to eat dairy? Do you

think that will be a temporary thing? I was never sensitive to dairy products

before the surgery.

My nurse practioner came over and took out my last remaining stiches (from one

the chest tube drains). That feels good.

Thanks,

Rich

My total knee replacement was done on Monday and I was home from the hospital

wednesday evening. I was home 1 hour and was ready to go back..just a lot of

stress. My home nurse came on thursday and will be back this coming friday to

take the staples out. My knee is so bruised and swollen. My physical therapist

came on friday and really gave me a workout. When she left all I wanted was my

ice and my pain pills. I am having a problem with cramping and she gave me some

exercises to stretch my leg. Did any of you have any problems with cramping? How

long did it take for your swelling to go down? I would appreciate any ideas any

of you have.

Hi Lynn,  Try not to get stressed, and try not to be impatient.  It takes a

lot of time to recover from a TKR.  The swelling will go down but not right

away.  Keep with the pain meds, and do what the PT tells you to do.  This is

just the beginning, but with patience, you will recover.  It takes time!!!

All the best, really! Joan

Hi, I had a TKR Apr 21st this year. They kept me in the hospital for eight days

and then in patient rehab for three weeks! Mine took ages and even now I am

still getting PT for it. It had got pretty bad before the surgery and I had to

wait due to other medical problems but I had hoped it would be quicker recovery.

I know people who have recovered much more quickly though. It needs a lot of

patience and work I think but most people seem pleasqed with the final result,

especially if you had a lot of pain before. Judith

*Hello Lynne, I had a hip replacement, but my neighbor had a TKR 4 months

ago and she said her knee is still a little swollen yet and she still has

some cramping in let but its getting a lot better, she walked with a walker

for about 2 weeks then a cane, she said just do your PT for sure no matter

how much it bothers you,, how your leg turns out depends on PT and your will

to want to walk again without pain. I am now going though PT for my hip and

I got depressed and stressed out at first but doing the PT and Ice and pain

pills I am doing much better, if you just want to talk please let me know I

am here for you and whoever wants information on hip replacement. Have a

blessed day. Pat. *
