Hi Carolyn, I don't use the pool, but do use the bicycle, and know that if you

stop, the knee stiffens up. I don;t know why, but it does. So for all of us,

get moving! and keep moving!

All the best, Joan

Subject: Re: I Think I'm in Trouble - TKR

Get yourself into a pool. I made all my gains in the pool - on land I was stiff

and moving my leg, increasing was painful. In the pool I could move without pain

and so I pushed further and farther. The cool water feels marvellous. The gains

in flexion that I made in the pool were carried over to land. I had about 5

appts with a water physio, after that I just did what she said, plus followed

the common sense exercise in a book called, " Heal your Knees " by Klapper

MD and Lynda Huey, a water therapist.

It sounds like you really wrenched that knee in the fall. If the doctor says

nothing is actually wrong ....get in the water, please. It will really help.

My tkr was a year ago and everything was going well till we went traveling all

winter (South America and Mexico). While we were in SA I was walking, walking,

walking and the tkr was great. Once we flew back to Mexico we got into our RV

again and I stopped walking much (had fractured my left foot in SA). So my trk

started stiffening up and causing me quite a bit of pain again. I was pretty

upset about that.

Returned home at end of April and after a month of being in the water 3-4X a

week I can honestly say that my flexion is back to what it was (about 130) and

the pain is 95% gone.

Hope this helps,

I pushed PT after the knee replacement. I asked both the doctor and the

therapist for additional exercises and did all I could to the extent the

therapist told me after two weeks I no longer needed her. The doctor

recommended daily bicycle rides of an hour or more. One month after the

replacement I was fighting a brush fire behind the house and dragging

hoses up and down a slope.

Now I am in a different part of the country, the Missouri Ozarks. As

far as I know there are no decent places around here to ride and as I

hope to have the replacement after summer, the rivers and lakes will be

too cold. I am looking for an indoor pool I can use. Even then the

closest will be about 30 miles away.

That is why I have a stationery recumbent bike. I live in the mountains and I

would never be able to make it up the steep hills around here. Even the kids

don't ride bikes here.....they have 4 wheelers. LOL I guess our options are

all different, depending on where we live huh.
