Guest guest
Hi Lin, It was certainly interesting reading, but even though the risk may be minimal, to me it seems best to err on the safe side and take the antibiotics. My surgeon reiterated in May that I should be really careful and take the drugs before any invasive procedure. I am siding with him. All the best, Joan ________________________________ From: Tinopener <tinopener@...> Total Joint replacement <Joint Replacement > Sent: Friday, July 15, 2011 3:40 PM Subject: Antibiotic prohylaxis prior to dentalwork  I've learned today from my dentist, that my surgeon's recommendation for me to have antibiotics prior to anything except a routine check are out of date. Guest guest
Hi Lin, The way I'm reading this is that they are in the process of determining new guidlines and until they do it's up to the individual os/dentist/patient. I'm with the others so far. The risk just doesn't make sense to me until more is known. I guess if I had a bad reaction to antibiotics I might think twice about it but otherwise I prefer safety. Guest guest
Here's the position statement of the Academy of Ortho Surgeons: AAOS releases new statement on antibiotics after arthroplasty By Ann Porucznik Comprehensive “information statement†puts patient safety first In February 2009, the AAOS Board of Directors approved the release of the information statement “Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Bacteremia in Patients with Joint Replacements.†The new statement asserts that “Given the potential adverse outcomes and cost of treating an infected joint replacement, the AAOS recommends that clinicians consider antibiotic prophylaxis for all total joint replacement patients prior to any invasive procedure that may cause bacteremia.†The full statement can be read at: http://www.aaos.org/news/aaosnow/may09/cover2.asp Thanks and have a good day!
