Guest guest
Jen, Thanks for your post. Because some members who have never used Swanson's have chosen to malign products that many of us are quite happy with, I did a check of their label and notice there is a 7 leaf guarantee of purity and potency trademark on it. Not sure if that is what your dh is referring to but on their website they have the following statement: " Since 2001 Swanson Health Products has voluntarily participated in independent third-party Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) audits, long before the FDA released their final regulations for the dietary supplement industry. Ingredients are tested at various stages throughout the production process to verify purity and potency, and finished products are tested for potency and stability by independent third-party laboratories to ensure that each supplement contains exactly what is stated on the label. " While it's true that many of their supplements are quite low in price, others are not. I suspect that is due more to the availability and ease of production of certain ingredients rather than in the purity. All the Best, Dee > > I’m not any sort of expert but my dh worked in the manufacturing part of a relatively large supplement company. He did everything from the lowest job on the totem pole to some management. Now he works for a small business that bottles supplements. There is a difference in the quality of supplements. A lot has to do with testing to make sure that adequate amounts of each supplement are actually in the product. When a vitamin or herb is encapsulated, there often does have to be something to help with flow. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the product isn’t a good one just because of a flow ingredient. On the other hand, an herb or vitamin isn’t going to be much good if it’s mainly filler. There is certification (can’t remember the name of it right now) that if a company has this †" it means they really are turning out a good quality product. The company dh works for now (and the one before) have this and it’s not easy to get. Anyway, often it is true that you get what you pay for. Certain ingredients are really expensive and if a product claims to have them but are selling for really cheap, you have to wonder how much of that ingredient is actually in it. Guest guest
Dee, GMP is what I was talking about. Thanks for reminding me. The audits are pretty extensive and they are audited on a continual basis to ensure that they keep their standards high. There is a lot of paperwork involved to ensure that each process is done right. I would feel good buying a product that was GMP certified. At this stage of the game, good companies won’t even work with manufacturers that aren’t GMP certified. And yes, there are ingredients that aren’t very expensive. Guest guest
I think its unfair to single out only Swanson's products. Many other brands by Major companies have lots of fillers in them too. One great thing about Swanson is they have a Money Back Guarantee on all products. As far as Swanson own brand products, I'm sure they are out-sourced to Major manufacturers, just like Vitaminshoppe does. Each company must oversee and ensure the quality of their products, which I feel confident Swanson's does. Guest guest
Elaine - this is my all time favorite whole food supplement - if you purchase the capsule all it has as ingredients is blue green algae, and the capsule is made from plant fiber and water. http://www.healthyfutures.net/bluegreensolutions/products/products/alphasun.php Carol > I am interested in supplements that contain little/no fillers but every one I check usually contain at least two of the fillers you listed. > If anyone knows of any please list. > thanks > elaine
