Guest guest
Everyone I know who has an operation - or procedure - has to go through a series of tests before the surgery to make sure there is no underlying condition that might kill or cause the person serious harm. You might not have realized that you had " medical clearance " because if one is in basically good health, it consists of a trip to your doctor for a normal checkup. My friend had a stress test done before her surgery as well as tests relating to her lung capacity. Almost everyone receives " medical clearance " because this surgery is done on people who are 90 years old. However, if there is something that is discovered the surgical team - including the anesthesiologist - will take special precautions or in some cases the condition is treated prior to the surgery depending on what the medical priority would be. For example, in the unlikely event that a serious heart blockage was found that would require by-pass, it would be likely that it would be performed prior to the knee replacement since it's a higher priority life saving operation and the knee replacement surgery could be more safely performed after that surger On May 13, 2011, at 5:33 PM, BeverlyO wrote: > I have been reading the posts here for about a year and had a total knee replacement done on my right leg last October. > > My husband has come to the point where he has decided that it is time for him to have a knee replacement done. Guest guest
Beverly, I was required to have a medical clearance too before my surgeon would schedule surgery. I had to have an EKG, a complete physical, a chest x-ray, and blood work. I had a total right hip replacement last November. Guest guest
I'm only 54 and had to have an EKG and clearance from my primary care doctor. I believe this is standard protocol for everyone. I can't say that all doctors ask for this, but I would think due to insurance issues they may need to cover all bases. Guest guest
Hi Beverly, Different doctors want different things to give you medical clearance for elective surgery. Most want blood tests, EKG, and chest xray. Some require a stress test and echo cardiogram even with no history of heart disease, especially in those over 60. I will leave it up to you and other readers of the blog to figure out why they want all these tests done before you undergo the TKR. In their defense, you do understand that this is a radical surgery that puts a lot of stress on all organs of the body. Being careful should not be considered a bad thing, no matter how inconvenient. I had my teeth cleaned, an EKG, blood test, chest x-ray, a stress test by my COPD DR, colonoscopy (removed two polyps), and my OS had my COPD DR attend the surgery. After surgery all those checks may require an antibiotic before they will do the test. Worst test was the colonoscopy. I lost a brother and sister to cancer so my DR said I had better be checked. Talk about pain. Air inserted would not come out for several hours later. DR said one polyp was large and would become a cancer within a year if not removed. I believe my frequency treatments made sure the polyps were benign but better that they are removed. I have similar electronic equipment to match what DR Rife had that was curing cancer back in 1935. I also have his lab notes and test procedure. I think the problem with weight becomes how long will the TKR material last after surgery. Extra weight causes more stress on the joint. Guest guest
I have a question for LTHR patients. It has been 13 days since my surgery. I am getting around on a walker mainly toe touches on left side. I am not standing up completely straight and this worries me. I can stand up straight from hip to shoulder and I can put my leg out straight(a pillow under it) when laying down. I am doing the exercises some. I have been so tired. The first few days I did the exercises the exact way and my muscles hurt alot. I try to do some of the exercises each day. Is this normal for only 13 days after surgery? ________________________________ From: Barbara Horton <bhort2000@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Sat, May 14, 2011 9:43:12 AM Subject: Re: Medical Clearance I had to have blood work, EKG, chest x-rays also, did not have a stress test as I could not walk... this is normal,,, better safe then sorry. ________________________________ From: Weal <goddessrenee@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Sat, May 14, 2011 8:10:32 AM Subject: Re: Medical Clearance I'm only 54 and had to have an EKG and clearance from my primary care doctor. Guest guest
: There are many variables on your recovery. I had direct anterior approach so at 13 days I was walking with a cane and began doing the stairs. My guess is you have some restrictions which means that maybe muscles and tendons were cut???The procedure used for surgery, your age and fitness level, your attitude towards recovery (which includes patience), and your body's natural response to serious surgery, all play a key role in healing. It's extremely important to work with your home therapy PT as strengthening the muscles is key here for recovery. I'm sure others who had the same approach will share more in detail. I wish you well through this process. I'm on week six of recovery now and thankfully with PT three times a week and swimming I'm no longer limping or walking with a cane. Hang in there, your body will heal in it's own time!! On May 15, 2011, at 10:45 AM, T SCHWARZ wrote: > I have a question for LTHR patients. > It has been 13 days since my surgery. Guest guest
13 days of course your still tired,, take it easy, do what you can but don't over do. do your exercises however many you can and don't worry if you can't do them perfect... it will all come in time.......shoot I'm still trying to stretch my leg muscles so I can step up higher. I think when using the walker I used my good leg, and arm muscles to walk, some weight is on the operated leg,,, but not much... I was suppose to only put a little weight on it for 3 weeks then i could do full weight... Try using the ball of your foot more, see if that works,,, if not ask your therapist to guide you on what you need to do... Actually when I was walking early on, I used the ball of my foot and then let down the heel...didn't use the toes.... you might be trying to walk to fast, just take your time....probably confused you we each recover at a different rate, a lot has to do with how bad the hip was and if a person could walk somewhat before hand etc. Barbara ... ________________________________ From: T SCHWARZ <tschwarz@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Sun, May 15, 2011 9:45:49 AM Subject: Re: Medical Clearance I have a question for LTHR patients. Guest guest
Thank you so much. I was getting worried. I had a birth defect that caused a deformity in my ball n socket. I walked fine before 3 weeks ago and one morning I got up n could not walk or put weight on it. Went to ortho dr. It was found that the ball had collapsed (crumbled). So hip replacement one week later. I'm only 48. I will keep exercising as much as I can! Guest guest
I had to have Med clearance and I had to have a stress test. (I was 69) I couldn't get on a tread mill so for my stress test they gave me a shot. And it did whatever happens to others who get on a tread mill. It opened up arteries etc. So I did have a stress test and it wasn't a problem to do the chemical one. I was a bit scared and found I had nothing to be afraid of. Guest guest
I so relate. I have a condition too that didn't even have a name until five years ago. I'm 54 and although I knew something was strange with my hips, the decline happened fast on my left hip. Eventually the right one will need replacement also, but thankfully I'm okay at the moment. Guest guest
, you have not said how old you are or what approach your hip replacement was done. Those two things alone will effect how much you are doing. I had the lateral approach so had many restrictions. My surgery and anesthesia took a lot out of me so I was getting my strength back at two weeks. I was walking around my house with the walker. At two weeks my PT started taking me outside for short walks. Each of us is different. No two surgeries are alike. Try to do your exercises each day. Maybe just a few at a time. You don't have to do them all at the same time. BARB in Florida Re: Medical Clearance I have a question for LTHR patients. Guest guest
I'm 49 and I also had lateral. I went today for my 2 week check and my surgeon was very pleased with my progress. He wants me keep walking for my exercises.
