Guest guest
Hi Devora, I really must say again that we are all different. Some of us could not achieve 95 degrees before the surgery! I actually have no idea what I was then, but I do know I could not do many things because of the pain. PT certainly helped afterward, and I went into Outside PT at 110, and left at 130, which I am still about. Although I cannot put my heel to my ass as I can with my right leg, I can play tennis, hike and climb stiles. All that seems good enough for me. After three weeks I was still moaning, on meds and sleeping a lot. See how you are in three months. Guest guest
At Hospital for Joint Diseases, they will not let you go if you cannot manage stairs. Even though I don't have any in my home, I had to learn how to manage before I could be discharged. I really don't know if I had 90 D then. I do know that my knee was straight form the start, and when I was evaluated at the PT when I started out therapy, it was 100. Guest guest
Joan, do you know how much our pre-surgery flexion/extension effects us after surgery? I have had the feeling that all the soft tissue problems I had before my two TKR's has made it harder afterwards. Often it is not my knee that feels tight, but my calf muscles and my tight back and hip flexors. Guest guest
I did get to 95 degrees flexion after three weeks full time rehab but it had dropped off to 90 degrees when I saw the surgeon three weeks later. When I saw my physio on Saturday he said that it had improved but he didn't think it would go further than it is now> He will measure for me again and it might be at 110 degrees. I can't kneel and I certainly can't bend my legs very far down. It really pulls to get to the current maximum so hope I can maintain it. It was bad due to the srthritis before the op and he says I should wait a year before having the other knee done. I am ok with it but thought it might be better than this.I am heading up for four months post op. Does the discomfort improve over time? Guest guest
Hi Devora, I think we are all different, and so our bodies react in different ways. I am fairly athletic, and so my muscles were in pretty good shape. Even bone on bone, I would take some Tylanol and play tennis. If your calf muscles are feeling tight, you need to stretch them more. I am sure your PT will give you stretching exercises. For the first three months after my TKR, EVERYTHING hurt! Now, I try not to think about it, and even forget which knee it was. For a bit. Guest guest
There was an exercise that I learned in rehab that tremendously helped by bend, but it was grueling. Put on a 5-pound ankle weight. Lay on your back. Use a strap or belt under your leg just above your knee to hold your leg up. Let your leg hang down below the knee. Hold this for 5 minutes every day. You can actually feel your knee giving way and bending more. ________________________________ From: judith <curl_judith@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Sunday, August 14, 2011 3:02 PM Subject: Re: Average schedule for flexion after TKR  I did get to 95 degrees flexion after three weeks full time rehab but it had dropped off to 90 degrees when I saw the surgeon three weeks later. Guest guest
I have been doing weights in physio and it has improved it a lot in quite a short time. I sit on a very high chair and have 5kg (heavy!) hooked on to my heel which pulls the leg back under the chair. then I have to lift it until my leg is straight. I don't know what is normal for knees. To get the maximum bend it really pulls on the knee which is unpleasant. Does that feeling go away eventually? Judith > > > > Does anybody have a schedule of average goals for flexion after TKR? Guest guest
I worked up to that 5 pound weight in PT. As I have my own ankle weights, I kept it up for quite a while. Even now, 11/2 years on, I do the knee bends watching TV. No guys, it's not perfect. And yes, the more you bend the more it can hurt. I do it to keep me going and to continue to enjoy the walking and tennis that I love. Guest guest
I can't imagine doing knee bends again ever! I can only get down a little way. Spoke to the physio today and he said I will be ok on stairs etc but may not achieve other things. I did start driving again which is not too bad. It pulls a bit but getting in and out is harder than the driving so it should be ok. Its six months since I drove what with the problems before so feels strange. By the way, that was 5 kilos which is about 12 pounds. Hard! I will see what the surgeon says on Sept 6th. Judith > > > > Does anybody have a schedule of average goals for flexion after TKR? Guest guest
Yes, 12 pounds would be difficult for anyone, much less a person with a new knee. Good luck with the surgeon. J ________________________________ From: judith <curl_judith@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2011 8:10 PM Subject: Re: Average schedule for flexion after TKR  I can't imagine doing knee bends again ever! Guest guest
I am so thrilled. Last week I was able to drive my car. I just had to wait a few hours after taking my pain pill; my right knee worked well enough to move from gas pedal to brake pedal. Then yesterday I was able to ride around the block on my recumbent Terra Trike. When the PT and I got back to my house after a brief trike ride, my flexion was up to 100 degrees and after next week she is ready to let me finish my PT on my own. I am feeling so positive right now. Devora I wrote Does anybody have a schedule of average goals for flexion after TKR? EG. 90 Degrees by a certain week. Guest guest
I have only just started to drive my car and its four months now! It is ok but I haven't been very far yet. Getting in and out is the most difficult as we have a small car and it need quite a bend to the leg for this. Also after a while in one position it gets quite stiff and uncomfortable when I do move. I am starting to dread having the other one done if this is the best I am going to get. Does it eventually stop pulling? I can feel it most above the knee which is strange to me as the one that hasn't been done hurts uinder the knee! Judith > > I am so thrilled. Last week I was able to drive my car. Guest guest
Hi Judith, I am not sure what you mean by 'pulling' above the knee. I still feel the ace bandage thing there, after 1 1/2 years. It doesn't hurt, though. It's just the sensation is always there. But sitting here thinking about it, it is certainly better than it was at 4 months. Keep up the therapy and try to get your flex to at least 120. Guest guest
I think thats the language difference. Does the ace bandage mean tightness? They always say 'tirer' here which is to pull. I have some mild pain but it feels as though there is pressure. Also there is a slight clicking which has started recently. I will have to talk to the surgeon when I see him on Sept 6th. I was hoping it would end up a bit better than this but it was worse before surgery as the knee used to lock and then give way. The physio told me yesterday that there are some people who don't even get 90degrees so maybe its better than I thought! Judith > > > > I am so thrilled. Last week I was able to drive my car. Guest guest
Hi Judith, Well, not exactly tightness, just the feeling that you have an ace bandage on when you don't. The new knee is never exactly like your old knee before disease set in, but it is so much better than before the surgery. Just keep at the exercises, and keep active! I did a whold days shopping with a girlfriend yesterday, climbing stairs, getting in and out of cars, and trying on clothes. A year and a half ago, I could have never done that. Guest guest
Thanks Joan. I did my first longish drive today. Half an hour each way. I got there and back ok. Knee very stiff and for some reason my ankle hurts. No idea what they do during surgery but my foot was black afterwards. Plus my other knee is not too happy now so it kind of takes the fun out of driving although nice to be out and about. Glad to hear you are doing well. Judith > > > > > > I am so thrilled.
