Don,

I just posted the optimum levels according to dr. mercola or did you just want

another opinion? To repeat, here is what Dr. Mercola says is optimal:

optimal Vitamin D levels is 50-65 ng/ml.

If you have cancer the optimal level would be 65-90 ng/ml.

Anything over 100 is considered excess:

Much more here at:

http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig5/mercola7.1.1.html

But if you just wanted other opinions that's fine too.

Best,

Hi Helen,

How long ago was the test that said your level was at 50? And are you sure you

weren't taking anything containing vit D up until that test? Many multi-vitamins

have vit D - though usually not adequate; but everyone is different and perhaps

you are one of the lucky ones who isn't deficient. Do you eat a lot of oily fish

such as salmon or sardines?

May be 3 or 4 years ago I had test reading 49.  I don't take multi-vitamin

but have been doing green/fruit juice twice or three times a week.  Then I

read one member from group recommended biot-D-Mulsion Forte up her level

very high.  So Just one bottle had gotten me to 119.  Hope it did not do any

harm to my body.

My blood tests in Oct. showed my Vit d level at 14. I was instructed to take 5

drops a day but in Jan it was changed to 10 drops a day for 2 mos., then

thereafter 1 drop a day. The dr. said my Vit d levels should be about 170.

I’m taking the same Vit d you mention.

Helen,

That's pretty amazing that you were able to achieve close to 50 ng/ml without

oily fish or supplementation. I have to take 6,000 IU of Vit. D to achieve 50 as

I'm not a sun worshiper. If you don't have any symptoms you are probably ok. If

you do they will fade in time but I would stop taking that supplement as it is

probably waaay too potent for you. Here is some information on the symptoms of

overdosing:

Overdosing fears from Vit D are vastly overblown...

Here's an extreme case to read about - 2,000,000iu per day for about a

month (that's 60,000,000 (yes, 60 MILLION) iu total) in a one month

period, and he is just fine:

http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/newsletter/gary-null-and-vitamin-d-toxicity.shtml

or

http://tinyurl.com/3xhrlq3

So, just watch for the symptoms of overdosing (main one being nausea),

and don't worry about it...

Don, I supplement with 5,000 IU vitamin D most days in the winter. I did not get

my D level checked.

I'd look at the vitamin D council works:

http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/vitaminDToxicity.shtml

Pubmed declares the normal blood range is 30.0 to 74.0 nanograms per milliliter

(ng/mL).

I don't read Mercola much.

all good,

Don,

I don't take everything Dr. Mercola says at face value either, but in this case

I see nothing wrong with erring on the side of caution. He's a strong proponent

of vitamin D so I don't quite see where his " agenda " fits in here. If you have

credible evidence to the contrary please feel free to post it. Btw, I supplement

with 6,000 units a day to bring my levels up to optimal range.

this now! "

Isn't that exactly what Helen Wang's doctor told her? (You included her post

below).

Dr Joe Prendergast is an endocrinologist out of CA who personally has

taken 50,000 IU of D3 per day for years w/o any ill effects, although

he has found that what happens over time is that one's D3 levels go

up, and then drop down below what they may have even started out at.

What he does NOT do is take any supplemental calcium when taking such

a high dose.

Dr of The Heart Scan Blog from WI has found with his

patients that D3 seems to be better absorbed when taken with a bit of

fat.

I wouldn't worry about such a level personally, but if you haven't

taken any D3 in some time, might be time to have it tested again. Just

because it went up doesn't mean it is going to stay up without

supplementation.

, I don't supplement with calcium. However, I take about 4 grams of

calcium ascorbate per day. Which means about 700 mg of calcium. I also take 8000

iu of D3. Is that amount of calcium ok for me to take ?

That doesn't sound like a healthy reaction. Its like his body is reacting

negatively. I am puzzled why that would happen.

Had my D3 checked in early October and it was 25, compared with the last time I

had it checked in 06 in Late Sept when it was 46. Started taking some

supplemental D and then found out I have carcinoid cancer in late December.

Upped my dosage to 30,000 per day. Had it checked again in early Feb and it was

still only 46. Up, nonetheless, but not the 70-80 that my alternative cancer guy

wants.

I live south of Chicago about an hour in a rural community where I ride horses

outside and drive a tractor alot baling hay, spreading manure, mowing, and

dragging my arena. Would think my level would be higher. My alternative cancer

guy views D3 levels as a secondary cancer marker.
