Guest guest
I have been off the list for sometime since I had my THRs last June and August. Both replacements seem to have healed well and other than some nerve damage on my inner thigh from the LTHR, I haven't really had too many problems. Recently when I am bending down to pick something up or even standing a moving my upper body some, I can feel a " clicking " in my hip. It feels weird, it doesn't hurt, and its not something I can actually hear..I can just feel it. I notice it most in my left joint, which is the one I had replaced first in June. I have a large head, MOM, replacement. Both replacements were done at the Mayo, in Rochester and other than a 6 week checkup in Oct, I haven't been back and don't have another appt scheduled until July for a 1 yr checkup. I can't seem to get an answer without the clinic telling me they only thing they can say is that they would need to see me...I live in NW Minnesota, which is close to a 7 hour drive one way. Ughh.. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Mechelle
Guest guest
I don't hear/feel a click but I do hear/feel a " grinding " during certain motions. I'm three years post-op with no problems. I have the infamous Stryker ceramic hip.
Guest guest
Did you get ceramic hips from Stryker, I had the same problems with Double Hip Replacements. I had to have them both replace. Guest guest
Nope...I have MOM replacements. They seemed to be the best option with my age (41) and I am done having babies. It just feels weird, like something keeps sliding into place or something. It is difficult to explain...I wonder how I am going to make the dr understand what I am trying to say? Guest guest
What you may be experiencing is a ligament sliding past the prosthesis. I have one MOM resurfacing and have felt it. MOMs are larger than the average prosthesis which is wonderful since we don't have to worry about dislocation but I think also it takes up a bit more room and therefore the weird sensations. My surgeon told me that unless you are feeling pain there probably isn't anything wrong. Once in a while when I step on that side I get a sensation of movement in the joint. It almost makes me light headed for a second as it feels " slippy " . I think that's the fluid in the joint and the parts moving together. Hard to explain also but I'll take my surgeon's advice and not worry about it if there is no pain. Deb > > Nope...I have MOM replacements. Guest guest
I actually am one of the unlucky ones that initially had a hip resurfacing which failed 6 months later and needed to be replaced with a total hip replacement (DePuy- Metal on Metal). Everything has gone well with this replacement. I am now about a year out from that second surgery. About 3-4 months ago I began to notice a clicking sensation with very slight movements. With larger movements (marked flexion)I definitely feel a click/clunk. It is never associated with pain, but I have noticed some pain on my lateral thigh just below my hip joint. I asked the orthopedic surgeon about it and he said this can happen and as long as there is no groin pain I shouldn't worry. From observing posts on the internet and reading some articles, I think I have come to a conclusion. The acetabular cups that they use for femoral resurfacing and probably some THR are large. As such they often use a large femoral head component to match. My guess is that tendons or ligaments are rubbing up against or over the large acetabular cup. Clearly the small movements that cause this are not due to dislocation of the hip and the absence of pain in most cases probably also means that the hip components are not loosening. I suppose all of us could get an x-ray or MRI to prove the components had not loosened to be on the safe side. Assuming and exam and or s-ray are normal, is is something we should try and ignore. > > I have been off the list for sometime since I had my THRs last June and > August. Guest guest
I made no claim to having expertise on this LOL. I had a ceramic/ceramic large head and for over a year sometimes I discerned a click -- it wasn't a noise, it wasn't a pain and it wasn't continual. I think it sometimes coincided with taking a first step so I assumed that something in my leg was adjusting. After about a year or so, the sensation went away so I assume that it was just part of the healing process. It is at least a year until one is totally healed -- at least. My OS said that at about 6 months it is not uncommon to have a pain in the thigh for a little while intermittently as the bone continues to grow into the prothesis. At one point (about 4 months after surgery) I had an occurrence where it hurt to make the up movement one makes when one lifts a leg into the car but that also went away after a short period of time. I tend not to be an alarmist so I basically went with with the flow and figured it was all my body adjusting over a long period of healing FROM the operation and also to a great extent from the impact of my having distorted and misused my body prior to the operation. I asked my OS whether I would know if I had dislocated and he laughed and said yes -- and at that point, I just ignored stuff.
