Guest guest
Jayme, I totally agree with . The Carbone workshop is very educational. It truly helped me to understand how language is aquired - and in turn - how we can help my son to aquire language. Extremely worthwhile!! Guest guest
Dr. Carbone's workshop in Indy is an Introduction to Verbal Behavior. Teaching language to children with autism using verbal behavior consists of the principles of ABA in conjunction with B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior. B.F. Skinner wrote an entire book on the subject of language acquisition as a learned behavior. Drs. Mark Sundberg & Partington wrote a book using Skinner's analysis to teach children with developmental delays functional communication skills. The title of the book is " Teaching Language to Children With Autism and Other Developmental Disablities " . It is this book in conjunction with his 25 years of clinical experience that Dr. Carbone uses as his workshop presentation. Drs. Sundberg & Partington also have published a comprehensive assessment tool that breaks languuage into teachable skills. It is called The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills, also known as the ABLLS. I have worked with children with autism for the past 12 years and have found that this method is by far the most productive method in helping children with autism develop FUNCTIONAL speech. However, the key to success is having a consultant that is trained in ABA, VB, and the effective teaching procedures that have been researched and documented in professional journals. They should also be a consultant who not only sits and gives advice to the therapists, but one who is able to work with the child directly, trouble shoot any difficulties that may occur in the child's learning a new skill, and have an appropriate program in place for the child. In my opinion Dr. Carbone is one of the top 5 professionals in the field of VB, along with Dr. Mark Sundberg, Dr. Partington, Dr. Carl Sundberg, and Dr. McGreevy. I know that there are other wonderful professionals in field and I do not want to take away from them. However, as usual there are those Psuedo-experts in the field. Be careful of them. They are the " experts " who may have attended one or two workshops and now feel that they know everything there is to know about VB and can provide consultation. But in the end, the children suffer and VB gets a bad name. I really went on, and I do apologize. If ever the opportunity arises, I would suggest that you attend any one of the above professioanls workshops on VB. For info on Dr. Carbone go to www.carboneclinic.com For info on Drs. Partington & Sundberg go to www.behavioranalysts.com Jackie What is that workshop about? ~n PCrawfo1@... writes: Anyone plan on going to the Carbone workshop in May in Indianapolis?
