Guest guest
Sorry about your revision nightmares, . Hope any future surgery is more successful. After my hip I'm pretty optimistic -- my leg hurt for years and now it's fine; better than the real one! If we can do that with the shoulder I'll be content. Cheers, From: marywaspe2000 <mary.waspe@...> Subject: shoulder replacement Joint Replacement Date: Sunday, July 25, 2010, 6:40 PM  RAH I have had 5 shoulder replacements the first ones went okay, no problems, but require a lot of therapy afterwards so you can lift your arm again. Requiring much more than a hip. my revisions have been nothing short of a nightmare.
Guest guest
From: kathylerner@... <kathylerner@...> Subject: shoulder replacement k_j_cotten@... Date: Thursday, March 3, 2011, 11:12 AM Hi I have had a total shoulder replacement, three years ago when I was 52. I was fit and so the muscles and bones were good. It took a long time, this is not an overnight recovery. You have to be patient and positive. I was extremely positive and I saw very good progress even on a daily basis and I did my physio religiously. I worked at home, just using my hand and wrist after two days, but I kept my arm in close elbow by my side. I followed the protocol exactly, no internal movements, no lifting more than a dinner plate for 12 weeks etc?? I don't remember. I was going to physio once a week and then after a month, I stopped and realized I can do it on my own several times a day based on the papers/diagrams. I came back to work after a week or 10 days. My only problem was sleeping as I don't like pain pills and I could not get comfortable on my back. I did not sleep well for two weeks. Follow your doctors protocol and do your physio. My range of motion is great and I am pain free. I do not overdo things, like push ups or heavy weights or carry excessively heavy parcels. Most important, I am pain free but NOT looking forward to my hip replacement or my other shoulder which I have been told needs to be done. Let me know if you have any questions. Do your physio and know what to expect. I know I was happy being able to brush my teeth but could not make a ponytail for quite a long time. I remember not cutting a canteloupe, steak or making my bed for a couple of weeks. Be patient, but yes, be aware of not normal pain. Take care, Kathy
Guest guest
, Jeff and I have had recent shoulder re-placement surgery. mine was February... And Jeff had shoulder surgery on a replaced shoulder due to a fracture, and he is waiting to do the other shoulder. As far as I know there is only one approach to this surgery, also I have had all revisions, its been a long time since I had the first surgeries. My left arm the incision, goes around as if you were wearing a T-shirt my other arm goes from top of my shoulder down to the elbow on the inside. x -- Shoulder Replacement Hi Everyone, I'm relatively new to this group. I joined when I found out I need a hip replacement (which I'm planning on for September or October). But since then, I've been told I also need a shoulder replacement. I've found tons of info on the internet about hip replacements (replacement vs resurfacing; anterior vs posterior vs lateral approach; etc etc) But I don't find so much about shoulder replacements. Even on this list, people seem to talk about hips and knees. Has anyone here had a shoulder replacement? Are there different types of surgery/approaches? Are there any decisions I have to make? (other than whether/when to have the surgery) Thanks for any info! ------------------------------------

I came off of a horse and broke my shoulder and they couldn't put me back together so that's what they did. All that I can tell you is that it's not fun but I had a lot more to heal up from than just the shoulder replacement. I had the surgery on April 11th and I'm still in therapy but they say I'm doing exceptional for what I've been through. Sooo, I'm not sure if I'm a good one to talk to, but if it's like the knee replacements and it's affecting your life I to a great extent I would do it. I'm not sorry I had my knees done at all. If you want I can send you some links that I found about shoulder replacements, even one online I think that shows them doing the surgery. They did the reverse total replacement on me because I had so much damage and they said it would give me more movement. The only thing they said that I shouldn't do is to hook my bra in the back. I just got front hooking bras. Tell me if you have any questions though, I can hopefully help. Hi Everyone, I'm relatively new to this group. I think they have them lots of places now. Did they tell you not to put your arm behind your back to do a bra? I agree with , don't do it until you absolutely need it, then maybe you will appreciate it. I'm going to therapy today and I'm so tired. I won't be able to do my exercises right because of it. It gets tired so easy because I have to build my strength up still. like I also had one shoulder done as a reverse shoulder, the other is a normal replacement. Jeff also had a reverse shoulder. where do you get your bras from, ? I have the worst trouble getting dressed as I can't lift the arm that has the reverse shoulder The other arm is a good as any one else's I can lift it put it behind my back etc. Its my right arm that is the problem, and I had my reverse shoulder done beginning of December 09 and I can't use it any more than if they left the other one in that didn't work. due to the tendons coming off the bone. my only advice about a shoulder is don't do it until its absolutely necessary, and you are miserable. x
Guest guest
, You know my story. Cobalt/Chromioum full shoulder replacement done in 2007 when I was 53 years old. I did the appropriate physio and followed the restrictions and protocol and have full range of motion with some limited lateral weakness, but fine for every day life (weakness re: weights) No pain was the purpose. I am allowed to do push-ups, because I am small (110lbs) but I won't push my luck with that, ha ha. I can carry heavy groceries, up to my capability, I can NOW close my bra in the back instead of swinging it to the front. The only restriction.........not to fall on it and no contact sportsl I just hope that everything remains fine for a long, long time. I also use some common sense. I love my gym workouts and do not do too much over the head weights nor too heavy. The doctors perform surgeries and prescribe drugs, they really don't know what you can or cannot do. Chiropractors and Phsiotherapists are better trained in Kinesioloogy for that. I hope, but I doubt my left shoulder will be as successful for several reasons, mainly I am right-handed and was motivated to get it to a good place. I also hope my hip replacement will be a sucess. Every surgery has its risks. Good luck to all of us. > > > In a message dated 8/10/2011 10:13:01 P.M. Guest guest
, I would love your shoulder replacement links. I, too, face such a surgery. One surgeon said not to wait and the 2nd opinion dr said I could wait because the pain isn't that great--nothing like the years before each of my hip replacements. BTW, I just talked with an acquaintance that just had his 2nd shoulder replaced 3 weeks ago. He only spent ONE night in the hospital. I spent nearly a week in the hospital for each of my other replacements. MarciaD

Guest guest
I had 3 nights in, for all my shoulder replacements, Except for the one where the brachial nerve was squashed And paralyzing my arm. For that it was 6 nights. -- Re: Shoulder Replacement , I would love your shoulder replacement links. I, too, face such a surgery. Guest guest
I was so pleased when I could do it, I showed my surgeon, And he was very impressed, as he told me I wouldn't be able to do it, And I said to him watch me ?? But this was after the first surgeries, I have now had 5 on right and 2 on left So its no wonder they don't work. !!! -- Re: Shoulder Replacement In a message dated 8/12/2011 6:18:04 P.M. Can't really yet anyway, if I wanted to. ------------------------------------
Guest guest
I had replied personally to a post and there seem to be many posts about this so, I am resending this email out for the groups info. The more you read the better and (so far so good) there are good stories also. (please excuse any grammar or spelling etc, written from work) I am a 56 year old, pretty active woman (was very active, now I need a hip replacement) All my careless injuries have turned to arthritis. Momentarily I feel okay. I am not so infavor of meds. I have had my full shoulder replacement, very successfully (till now so far anyways) in 2007. It was an extremely hard decision, to do it not. But the pain was 24/7, when it impacts your life, you have to do it. The other concern was, that I am right handed, there is always a risk with surgeries if it will be succesful and not botched up, not to mention, how I will brush my teeth and wipe my butt. I have cobalt/chromium, that is what my doctor used. I have a small, designer scar(maybe 3 inches long). I live in Toronto by the way. I suffered for over 12 years after a fall, or many falls onto my shoulder. All the therapies on and off did not help. From physiotherapy, to Chinese medicine, to Chirpractor which killed for that teeny bit better range of motion. I kept modifying my gym workouts never wanting to make things worse or have pain or the opposite, a frozen shoulder. I was in the hospital for one night. I did not like the meds, one was good for pain but not for sleep. I have to be honest, I am not a back sleeper and that was difficult. I did not sleep for 2 weeks. I should have put something in my nightable to take for sleep. I continued going to the gym. I was able to reduce the tension and still work out, but you are quick to realize how everything is connected. I had someone make me a ponytail at the gym. I went to physio once a week and quickly saw that I can follow the protocol on my own since I was familiar with the exercises. I must say, I followed exactly and even lay down at work to do them. I did the exercises 3-5 times a day. It said do not lift more than a dinner plate for 12 weeks thats what i did. No internal rotations etc. I am a bookkeeper and did work from home 2 days after surgery, elbow tucked in(like i was supposed to)and using my keyboard lower down on my lap. I did not make my bed, cut a steak or cantelope for a week or two. Everyday, I saw improvement and yes it was a steady long process and not an overnight miracle. I have fantastic range of motion and don't over do it now. The surgeon says I can do push ups but I don't. I am nervous how long it will be good till. I covered the incision with a large bandaid that entire first summer. Don't be discouraged though it is a hard decision. How much pain do you want to endure? What else would you like to know? Write me anything you want to know Kathy p.s. your bra issue was not my issue as I always closed my bras in the front and turned it around. Always have to help the operated arm in first when dressing up after surgery. get informed and go to as many surgeons as you need to feel comfortable I already went to 5 for my hip and finally found a nice one that actually took the time to explain things etc ly, I am so tired though of all the appointments, xrays, ultrasounds, mri's and running around over the years, but there are worse things > > , > > I would love your shoulder replacement links.
