Pat to Pat,

Prepare now for your comfort when you get home and be sure and arrange for some

assistant the first week. It takes time, but you will improve as the days go by

and yes, you will be glad you had the surgery. I am so thankful every day for

my new knees. I will be thinking about you when you have your surgery. Keep us

posted.

Uh oh..from what I've heard, hip replacements, if done with a true

anterior approach, don't require as much home help afterwards as knees.

Folks who've had both (but with the anterior approach hip) all have said

to me that hips hurt much more before, knees hurt much more after. Don't

look at me, my knees are...so far..fine.

Any hip replacement is much easier to recover from than any knee

replacement. For most people, there is almost no pain after a hip replacement -

there is surgical discomfort but the joint itself is pain free. Recovery from

knee surgery is much harder and more painful.

Anterior hip replacement does provide a much easier recovery than the

traditional posterior approach. That's because there are virtually no

restrictions after surgery and since no muscles are cut, one is ahead of the

game so

to speak in terms of getting back to full mobility.

Thanks, I continue to stall for a variety of semi-valid reasons, but am

having the other hip injected ASAP...that injection literally took all the

pain away, then and there, and I walked out of the office stunned at how

GOOD it felt not to hurt. Well, much..:)..the other hip isn't as shot, but

it's still painful and so...needle time again. Right hip is bone on bone and

some of you know what that is like.

(The " stall " is temporary BTW, and part is building up through PT first,

then some other reasons that won't last all that long.)

PT is getting easier...men, look away, sexist comment coming: I usually

share my time with a guy who is half my age, and a former Chippendale

dancer..:). He's also darned nice, a fellow USC grad, and while he's back to

great shape (sigh)..he lives with constant pain form having his spine crushed

when he was run over not once..but twice..by a truck backin gup. " What was

that thump? I don't know, I'll pull forward and get out to check... " ...).

So he is a nice distraction when things start to hurt.

There is some recovery pain...but pain can be individual...what's bad for me

might be easy for you.

Knee pain before surgery is just as debilitating (when it interferes with

the quality of your life, then it's definitely a bad time). Pain

afterwards is there, yes, even with minimally invasive surgery...but again,

experiences will differ from patient to patient.

That said, the recovery pain is totally worth it as you can recover a more

normal life.

Hope this helps!

True, but it never hurts to be overprepared rather than under.
