Guest guest
I'm interested if most people feel the surgery was worth it. For me, 19 days after, I can walk without pain. Yesterday I walked around my house and later in the day to the road and back. I'm on a dirt stony road with inclines so that 700 or so feet was very good. I used one crutch. In the apt I can walk with no crutches. So if my objective was to walk and stay out of a wheel chair it's already worth it. I still have some pain when I sit and when I lie down. I'm down to only Tylonol though so that's not so bad. I think to stay alert as you age you have to be active physically. So I'd have to say, so far, it's worth it. I do think I want to move to a warmer climate though, that's easier on the joints. Family or Climate, what a choice! Lynn
Guest guest
That's excellent. Modern medecine allows things our grandparents would not have dreamed of. I'm interested to see how my knees and other hip are now that I'm walking normally again as they were starting to hurt before surgery because I was " leaning " badly. Guest guest
I am one year out from my right THR and one week out from my left THR. My right THR has been very much worth it and I am planning on my left THR being worth it as well. I am glad that I only have 2 hips! Hopefully all this hip pain is behind me now and I can move on with my life.....free of hip pain! From: Lynn Badler <coalvilleut@...> Subject: Was it worth it? Guest guest
Two is definitely enough. I'm interested in how your healing goes for your left hip compared to your right. Was it in the same condition pretty much? Let us know how the recovery goes. We can't see into the future but it's wonderful to know about successful surgeries. Guest guest
I have congenital bilateral hip dysplasia. My right hip was worse than my left, but not long after I had the right hip replaced, the left hip deteriorated rather quickly. I have been comparing the two surgeries and I really shouldn't. They are not twins and I should stop expecting them to be. I think I bounced back rather quickly from my right THR and I had quite a bit more swelling on that side. My left hip surgery left me in quite a bit more pain than my right although my swelling was less. I feel that my energy level and enthusiasm is much less with my left hip than my right. Maybe the increased pain is draining me physically and emotionally. To date, my right THR has been a complete success and I am hoping and praying that my left one is as well. Thanks for your interest! From: Lynn Badler <coalvilleut@...> Subject: Re: Was it worth it? Joint Replacement Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 1:18 PM Two is definitely enough. Guest guest
Lynn, I spend most of my time on this list as a lurker but just had to answer your post. Yes, yes, and yes! My THR was June 20. I teach elementary art (which is a contact sport - trust me...) and wanted a bit of summer to recuperate. At three weeks I'd moved off of pain meds back to my regular ibuprofen and was getting around at a week-long horn convention in Denver with no walking aides. We traveled for a month and I visited a physical therapist for the first time today since the week after surgery. The difference between my mobility today and in March (when he did my pre-ortho assessment) is simply amazing. I'm 55 and have dealt with arthritic knees since the age of eight. Repeated knee surgeries and gait problems probably contributed to my hip issues so I was ready for some relief. I know I'm fortunate to be able to have my new hip at a relatively young age and to have a partner who was a great help post surgery, but I've been surprised (and thrilled!) at how steadily I've made progress. By the way, my daughters are in Phoenix and were part of the summer expedition. Can you imagine how nice my cool WA air was after those 110 degree temps during the visit? I suppose I'm lucky on climate, too - our winters aren't severe at all and I can breathe in the summer. =) Joyce (who can always put in a couple more cats if she gets too cool....) > ________________________________________________________________________ > ________________________________________________________________________ > 11a. Guest guest
Wonderful, and only 2 months out. You are doing so well, hope I am at 2 months out too. My hip was not too great, but getting along, when I had two straight weeks of outdoor playground duty at 8 degrees. It froze up and never unfroze. I'd love to be and live in Phoenix! Did for a while, probably should never have left, maybe I wouldn't have needed joint replacement! Guest guest
I'll pray for you too. What a lot to go through if at the end of healing you still have problems. I'm hoping you won't. Guest guest
It is not a problem having both knees done at the same time at all. His Doctor gave him the choice of doing them one at a time six weeks apart or at the same time. He was up and walking within 12 hours after surgery. It is realy not as hard as people seem to think. Not that its so easy but its workable. He even stoped using any walking aids with in 3-4 weeks. -- In Joint Replacement , " tinypoms " <tinypoms@...> wrote: > > I was wondering how your husband had both knees done at the same > time? I would think you need the other leg for support as you can't put too much pressure on the operated knee. I would love to hear from others that had both knees done at the same time. Was it very hard? Actually you are supposed to put weight on the knee shortly after surgery. Even people with one TKR are gotten up out of bed, given a walker and asked to put full weight on the operated leg. This isn't like a broken bone. You aren't supposed to tread lightly. You are supposed to walk with weight-bearing to prevent having your leg create scar tissues while in a " limping " position. While I just had one done, if I had needed two, I would have done it. I'm sure It might have hurt more but the walker is your support anyway. **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here. Guest guest
Any TKR whether single or double is given a walker right away. I stayed with the walker for two weeks then switched to a cane but the walker is fairly necessary as you are a bit dizzy in addition to being in pain and slow. Re: Was it worth it? Up and walking on both legs in 12 hours? WOW. Using crutches, a cane, what? Modern medicine is astonishing. Lynn > > > > > > > > > > > > In a message dated 8/19/2008 8:47:01 A.M.
