Guest guest
Best to you Goldie. It's natural to be nervous before hand, and the first couple weeks are difficult, but with the right attitude and commitment to physical therapy you will be good as gold in no time at all. Guest guest
Hi Goldie! You wouldn't be normal if you weren't a little scared...but I can guarantee that once the surgery is done, all that pain will be gone. Sure, you'll have recovery pain, but it's different from how life is now. It's a life changing event for most of us to have a more normal life restored! Make sure you do your PT, you'll be glad you did. Guest guest
Judith, my surgeon is about 50 and very good with his approach (lateral). You have to have a hospital that buys a specific table for the anterior approach surgery. Some times younger surgeons will try new methods before the older ones. I have had a text book recovery but it has taken a while. I definitely was not out painting the town at two weeks out....... BARB in Florida Re: Re: 2 WEEKS LEFT What approach did you have? I just kind of assumed that everyone was doing the anterior approaches these days but was told that in many areas, that is not the case. Glad you're home though, it has to feel better just being there. judith In a message dated 6/23/2011 11:14:41 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, grace@... writes: I got a new hip last Friday. Guest guest
but make sure you get one who has an established record.........the new approach still requires good skills..........infection, blood clots, leg shorter or longer than the other..... can happen with any surgeon no matter the approach......... check out the whole package........don't disregard a great surgeon just because he uses the 'old fashioned' approach...........BARB Re: 2 WEEKS LEFT Unfortunately, most people are not lucky enough to have the Anterior Approach when their hips are replaced. The Anterior Approach requires a different skill set as well as special equipment that most doctors do not have. You have to research to find a doctor who performs the Anterior Approach but it is worth the effort. Guest guest
I had an anterior approach in 2007 and while it may be more common, it is certainly not the prevalent technique for hip replacements. It requires a special table which immobilizes the legs - your feet are put into what resemble " moon boots " and you are suspended over the table which has a gap. The moon boots enable the legs to be immobilized and moved with much more precision than is possible with human hands. The gap in the table enables constant radiographs (a form of X-ray) to be taken which enables the OS to perform the surgery properly from the front. It also requires proficiency in a technique - and at least 100 surgeries to acquire that proficiency. If an OS has not learned the technique during residency, they must commit to relearning it and then find a way to " experiment " on at least 100 patients. The table is quite expensive - I believe it costs close to $1 million dollars so a hospital would want to commit funds for this technique. My surgery was at Cedar Sinai in Los Angeles which is a huge state of the art medical center. When I had mine done, not every doctor used this technique - and I had to find a surgeon who used the anterior approach. He had trained under Dr. Matta who is considered to be the " father " of the anterior approach in the US. Guest guest
I know that I will not abide by the post op restrictions in the butt-first version, nor can I. It's not an option, and fortunately, doesn't have to be. I'm lucky enough to live in an area with lots of choices. In a message dated 6/24/2011 9:32:24 A.M. Guest guest
I had an anterior approach in 2010 at St. s Hospital in Santa . This hospital is also state of the art with a brand new Orthopedic wing. My surgeon was Dr. Matta and he probably is the father of the anterior approach, but not because he thought it up. The anterior approach has been used in Europe for years...one estimate is since the 1960s, other estimates go back further. Dr. Matta went to France and trained there for a year and is credited with bringing this approach to the U.S. Since then he has been performing this type of hip replacement and training other surgeons. Guest guest
You're correct Judy as I should have said " father in the US " - LOL - I'm guilty of being ethnocentric LOL. I have a very extensive paper he wrote which he found on the internet when I was doing my research which traces the history of the procedure in France and how he further developed it in the US when he took it back here. I think he worked with Hana to develop the " table " he uses (and which is used by my OS). I believe Matta was involved at USC before relocating to St s. I know my OS did his residency with Matta at least a decade ago since my OS is no spring chicken LOL.
