Guest guest
Hi Lynn, I am really sorry you tripped. It must have been horrific! You are not three months out yet, and though I think your flex should be more, the swelling is normal. Things changed day by day with me, and some days the pain was really bad, some days not. Even now, 1 1/2 years later, I still work every day to keep my knee bending. Follow the advice of you PT and keep at it! Remember there is scar tissue that you have to work through. Don't let it win! I used Palmer's Cocoa Butter on the scar, and still do. Keep us informed on how you are doing. All the best, Joan in NYC for now. ________________________________ From: Lynn <lynnf_99@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Mon, May 30, 2011 5:37:32 PM Subject: I Think I'm in Trouble - TKR Hi Everyone! I'm hoping for a bit of advice...had a total knee replacement on 29 Mar 11. Doc used minimally invasive procedures and computer aided navigation. I was doing well, 95 flexion until my 4th week, when I tripped and, according to OS, gave myself a manipulation without benefit of anaethesia. I have to say, I've had lots of surgeries, and this trip by far outweighed any of the pain associated with them. I saw stars, haze, phew...it was horrible. Doc switched me to Percoset, told me to proceed with PT no matter what. Four weeks have passed. I still have swelling...especially the outer area at the bend of the knee. It's starting to loose some of the hardness, but the pain when I raise my leg, try to bend it, is really nasty. The Percoset doesn't help much, which surprises me. Sleep is horrible. And worst of all, my flexion has dropped to 83. My PT is very well known to me...she's a PhD and really understands my weird muscle disease and fibromyalgia. She is laying the blame at the door of both, plus she's telling me I'm guarding my knee. Honestly, I'm not trying to, the knee doesn't want to bend, I'm working at it, doing my exercises several times a day and icing it. Plus I'm massaging the scar according to the book recommended here. I probably should have called him 2 weeks ago when I wasn't improving, but I thought it would take time...but to me, backsliding to this degree is not acceptable. I will see him on Thursday. Any pointers on what to expect from the OS...better what, what I should expect he'll do (he's pretty matter of fact and doesn't spend that much time, but this visit, he's going to have to come up with a plan of action.) If he suggests a manipulation, I think I shall go out and have a few drinks! ) Anyway, I know this is long...but I do need your help. Many thanks! Lynn LTHR Oct 09 RTKR Mar 11 ps. Guest guest
Get yourself into a pool. I made all my gains in the pool - on land I was stiff and moving my leg, increasing was painful. In the pool I could move without pain and so I pushed further and farther. The cool water feels marvellous. The gains in flexion that I made in the pool were carried over to land. I had about 5 appts with a water physio, after that I just did what she said, plus followed the common sense exercise in a book called, " Heal your Knees " by Klapper MD and Lynda Huey, a water therapist. It sounds like you really wrenched that knee in the fall. If the doctor says nothing is actually wrong ....get in the water, please. It will really help. My tkr was a year ago and everything was going well till we went traveling all winter (South America and Mexico). While we were in SA I was walking, walking, walking and the tkr was great. Once we flew back to Mexico we got into our RV again and I stopped walking much (had fractured my left foot in SA). So my trk started stiffening up and causing me quite a bit of pain again. I was pretty upset about that. Returned home at end of April and after a month of being in the water 3-4X a week I can honestly say that my flexion is back to what it was (about 130) and the pain is 95% gone. Hope this helps, Carolyn TKR May 10 > > Hi Everyone! > > I'm hoping for a bit of advice...had a total knee replacement on 29 Mar 11. Guest guest
Hi Lynn, You're still in the very early stages of recovery and sounds lke the fall was a setback that's going to require some additional exercise to get back on track. I also have fms so understand how difficult that can make things. The one thing you should expect from os is an x-ray to make certain you didn't do any damage to the new knee. That being the case you'll be fine after a few more weeks of work. Keep working on bending the knee. Good luck, Jeff From: Lynn <lynnf_99@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Monday, May 30, 2011 5:37 PM Subject: I Think I'm in Trouble - TKR Hi Everyone! Guest guest
Thanks, Jeff and everyone who responded! Went to PT yesterday and she got me to a 90 bend...it wasn't easy even with Percoset. But I was happy about it and have been trying to keep stretching and bending as much as possible. I'll see the OS tomorrow...and he did take x-rays when I hurt it and all was well with the new knee. Which is why he told me to keep at the PT, which is good advice. The home health PT guy thought that one section that's so swollen might have fluid in it, so I told the doc that and doc said " You had surgery, it's supposed to be swollen. " Subject closed! LOL! I will ask the doc for more PT to include the pool. Driving to PT is a problem because of the Percoset, of course, so I have to figure out how to get it done (cab ride!) Thanks again!
