Hey,

Do any of you know how safe it is to get a tattoo after having a joint

replacement...

not talking timing but more is it ever safe for us to get a tattoo....i've had

two THR's

and one revision...all in two years time. Was just thinking how sweet it might

be to

commemorate this long journey with a tattoo...sometime in the future..but seem

to recall

that it wasn't wise to ever undergo the procedure with artificial joints...

Thanks

I had a tattoo done on my 40th birthday, after I had both shoulders and

both hips replaced.

I thought I was done in the replacement stakes, so I had a little anemone

fish put on the front of my hip,

these were my favourite fish to watch when I was scuba diving.,

I can hide it under Pants and swimmers, I didn't do it for any one else to

see just for me,

only thing was I went back 3 years later had a knee done, and when I woke up

the surgeon,

had drawn a fishing line onto my little fish. I wouldn't do it again as it

hurt like hell.

I didn't even think about antibiotics at the time, but on hind sight that

was pretty silly.

Celaine,

I had my THR done last February and I got a tattoo in July. I checked with my

surgeon first and all he had me do was take an antibiotic the same way I would

before getting my teeth cleaned.

Celaine,

So what tatoo design do you get to commemorate your journey? Is there a Japanese

symbol for " Thank God this is over " ?

After I had a revision within a year or my original replacement and both

anterior and posterior approaches, I was tempted to get " Born to Lose " tatooed

between the two scars, but with my luck it would have come out " Born too Loose " ,

which would have meant another revision.

I had a resurfacing three years ago, and just two weeks ago I got my tragus

(part of my ear) pierced.

I figure that a lot of the warnings about piercings/tattoos are for two reasons:

Firstly, that a lot of idiots don't follow the aftercare instructions ( eg don't

touch unless your hands are very very clean, leave new piercing in place for

eight weeks before changing it etc etc) so naturally, they get infections. These

risks are vastly lowered with sensible aftercare.

Secondly, I think most doctors reservations are probably based on an outmoded,

kind of nineteen-fiftys idea of dirty, dodgy tattoo parlours, full of drunks and

sailors!

Most tattoo parlours ( and ear piercers) now operate in surgically clean

conditions, with single-use needles, lots of sterilisation etc etc.

I figure that I have been exposed to more germs and potential infection though

my regular gardening activities, playing with my cats, cleaning out my chicken

shed etc etc than I ever got going to get my ear pierced!

Obviously, a bit of extra care is required, but after you get a joint replaced,

everything needs a little extra care, not just tattoos but everyday living....

That's my take on it, anyway!

Totally agree Freja, having been a nurse for over 25 years I looked at their

sterilization methods before I had one done. I had my ears pierced in Hong

Kong when I was 13 so that was a very long time ago.

that's so funny.

Yes I had an Anemone fish done, as these were my favorite fishes to watch,

when I was scuba diving, since I can't do that any more, I had the fish

done,

so I could see one on a daily basis. Although it doesn't swim !!!

That was 16 years ago. !!!
