Guest guest
, ask you doctor to switch to Orapred, our son has taken it at the onset of his fever and he also uses it when he has a bad asthma attack. And he actually likes the taste. Much better tasting and is basically the same thing, a liquid steroid. Dad to chris, almost 4! Prednisolone Hi everyone, My son is due to get sick on sunday. This is the first time we are going to try prednisolone. My husband and I tasted a little bit of it and I almost gagged. Blake doesn't like taking Tylenol let alone this new stuff. I know he is going to puke it up. He is 4 so he really can't swollow pills yet. Does any one have the same problem or have any idea's? Thanks Mom to Blake (4)

Guest guest
Hi , The two times my daughter (5) has taken the prednisolone she did throw up, once all over the ER nurse. My doctor only gives me one dose at a time, and the vomited dose from the local pharmacy, when I called they were happy to replace it with pills for me. The pills are quite small and slide right down for with applesauce. We also take the cimetidine in pill form again with applesauce. Hope you receive lots of ideas so you can find something that works for you. Best wishes. Walton (5) Pfapa Nanaimo BC Canada Prednisolone Hi everyone, My son is due to get sick on sunday. Guest guest
Hi - Thanks - I was wondering about the pill form. I wasn't sure on how big they were. If he could take that it would make our world here so much eaiser. I was told that once we give him the prednisolone the fever will go away and then they know that he has ? Does that make sense? After reading the messages I noticed that some kids still gets the fever. Guest guest
Hi , The prednisone pills are about the size of two tic-tac’s put together. I know at least one other family is using the pill form, other than me. has been swallowing pills in applesauce for about a year. Kids are amazing. Some doctors do use the prednisone as a test for help with diagnosis. The twice took it her symptoms did go away, we don’t use it unless a very bad episode because it also increased her frequency of cycles. As far as it not totally alleviating the fevers for some, I am also aware that at times some kids require more than one dose. I’m uncertain if it’s due to the dose given initially. We use one mg/kg. I know some kids use only.5mg/kg and it works for them and others require the maximum dose of 2mg/kg, I’m not certain if the 2mg/kg is given in divided dose. (not all at once) By saying fever going you mean per episode and not permanently right? (LOL) Best of luck finding what works best for your family. Guest guest
Hi - Thanks for the idea for the pills. He took his first dose today. The first one I gave to him with yogurt he chewed the pill, which he didn't like that too well. He had to take 6 pills so I was getting worried about how to teach him to just swallow and forget about the pill in the yogurt. Then he figured it out and it went down. Yeah! Now we just have to see if its working. He took a long nap and woke up sweating. Seems to be fine now. Then I worry about if it will come back sooner. Something I guess we all have to learn to live with. Thanks again. I expect the dose your doctor has given you is much higher than that and it shouldn't be taken for very long because it can completely suppress your adrenal output, however under 5mg does not suppress the HPA axis at all. Somewhere I have got a Pubmed study which proved this. Sorry I don't know anything about the other drugs you mention. Pam

Suppose to take 6 the first day, then 5,4,3,2 and then 1. I took one this morning so maybe that is all I should take. I don't know that my adrenals are tired. Guest guest
Hi Emma, I don't know the inner workings of prednisolone, but I can tell you what happened to me when I took kenacort. It is also part of the corticosteroids family. It seems corticosteroids, lessen the immune-system, which happened to me about 18 months ago. I was no longer able to be indoors when the heater was running or use the car heater, and that was only the tip of the iceberg. I am getting better, but it would have killed me, but I got some lucky breaks. I'm not a doctor, and don't know much about this drug, but if it was me I would do stuff to build up the immune-system, not destroy it. Hope this helps, Good luck, Ron Message 15 From: " patricia " pcmattes@... Guest guest
Hi Emma, I can tell you that I have taken prednisone for very brief amounts of time. It worked wonderfully well and I wish I could take it all the time. But I can't. It is a drug that has A LOT of dangerous side effects. It is an excellent drug, very effective, but it needs to be used with a lot of caution. For me, I was only able to convince my doctor to prescribe it because I was unable to move my arm and I needed to finish my preceptorship to graduate. She put me on 10 mg a day. Again, with great caution, and has not been willing to do it since. If you would like more information regarding the dangers and side effects, I would be happy to get that for you. Guest guest
Hi Emma, I tried Prednisolone for a few weeks at 25mg and didn't have any problems. This was the closest I felt to being the " old me " for decades. Luckily I didn't have any of the side-effects and I even lost weight. I was also able to taper it down easily. My diagnosis is M.E. and my symptoms are largely viral. We are all different though and I hope things work out for you! If ones adrenals don't make enough cortisol it is likely to be far more harmful to the body to go without the cortisol then to substitute up to 5mg daily which is equal to 20 mg hydrocortisone. I proved this because when on this dose I did another cortisol/DHEA test and for the first time ever my DHEA came back into the range the way it should be. Previously to this my DHEA had always been over the range and the cortisol range was on the low side (as per the Pubmed study I have posted). Also I felt so much better and have no side effects at all after 3 1/2 years (provided I take the whole dose when I wake up along with my thyroid meds) otherwise I would get insomnia. Guest guest
- I posted this originally back in February. You really need to get a prescription from a doctor that understands . We were told to use a second dose only if the first dose didn't knock out the fever. Our daughter reacted highly to the Prednisone - became totally wild. So we had to use a very small dosage. Typically the fevers also come closer (ours came every 10-12 days) when we used the 2 mg/kg dosage. Ultimately, we determined that 4-7 day fevers every 20-30 days was too much to deal with and the Prednisone really affected her personality - so we opted for a T & A. While not for everyone, it has worked for us so far. We've now gone over 6 months without a fever. Hopefully the below information will help: Message 20426: I see a ton of posts that discuss doses of Prednisone in teaspoons. My concern when I read these is that it all depends on weight of your child (just like Motrin and Tylenol)... So I thought this might help some of you figure out the math and what dosage your doctors are recommending.... Please bear in mind that this is for a 15mg/5ml Orapred solution. Typical dosage recommendation is 1-2 mg/kg ---- note that a kg is about 2.2 pounds Also note that our Orapred dosage is 15mg/5mls (or 15 mgs per Teaspoon) To figure out pounds to kgs to figure out the dosage here's a calculation you can do: LB weight * .45 / 15 = Teaspoon for 1mg/kg Dosage OR LB weight * .45 / 3 = ML for 1mg/kg Dosage If your doctor is recommending 2mg/kg then you would double the result above. For example a 32 pound child is about 14.4 kgs. And at 15 mg/5 mls (our form of Orapred) - you would get 32x.45=14.44/15=.96 (or Roughly 1 teaspoon). We found that a .6mg/kg dose was about right for our daughter. She'd run a low 100 the day after, but didn't seem to impact her as much emotionally and the fevers spread out to about 25-35 days. Our daughter was 34 pounds and 3 mls worked for her (so that equates to about a .6mg dosage per kg) For those that get really confused with all the mls, kgs, mgs - especially when we use pounds in the US ---- I hope that the above helps you. BUT if for any reason you do it and the dosage seems WAY off... please check with a pharmacist or your doctor first. ----------------------------------------- ==================================================== This message contains PRIVILEGED and CONFIDENTIAL information that is intended only for use by the named recipient.
