I was given the shots in the stomach while in the hospital and I had to continue

them while at home. I think it was only for about 10 more days though once I

was home. I was shown how to give them to myself and I did have a lot of

bruising from them but since it prevents blood clots, I didn't mind. I was in

the hospital 5 days, they said it would have been four days except that I had

both knees done at the same time so they wanted me to stay an additional day.

I took coumadin(?) and had a nurse come to the house and take my blood levels

every few days. They would call and let me know the amount to take. I have had a

THR and TKR and this happened both time and in two different states.  This only

lasted about a week and a half before they took me off.

Both coumadin and lovenox are blood " thinners " and reduce the risk of clots.

The advantage of Lovenox is that it is theoretically safer as your blood doesn't

have to be monitored.

I had Lovenox and thought that I would have problems with it but it turned out

to be very easy. They really aren't injections because the dose comes in a

delivery system where you put something on a pinch of flesh and then just stab -

it doesn't hurt at all.
