Guest guest
Bill,  My THR was the best thing I have done for myself in years. I also had a TKR on the same side. I don't walk funny and can walk and do everything except run fast and crawl on that knee.  Secrets are to take the pain meds! They help you through PT and with movement. Sleep when you are tired and follow directions - don't try and be a marter. I was up with both surgeries that day and in a walker for three weeks and then a cane for a few. The pain meds let them move and bend my leg without much pain and therefore I was able to walk etc. faster. I saw people that did not take tyhe meds crying and not allowing the movement necessary to really get better. Get all the PT you can. Also, sometimes I limp when tired. They think it is because I limped for so long before the surgeries.     I have a few twinges every once in awhile but I can actually stand and put my feet together!! ________________________________ From: Bill G. <absofbeer2001@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Sun, February 13, 2011 8:27:10 PM Subject: Normal Post Op Pain  Hello All, I am contemplating THR.. I have AVN in both hips and my left hip is symptomatic.. I have mild pain right now.. walk with a slight limp. I probably could wait to have surgery, but due to a lack of work ( WINTER ) now is a good time to take care of this.. Chances are with AVN, I'm going to need it anyways.. I would like to know what to expect as far as Post Op Pain? How bad is this going to hurt me? Is it a throbbing constant pain? My OS said he would do an Anterolateral approach to my hip. I have heard that some people say it feels better than before surgery, due to the amount of pain from Bone on Bone etc. I am not in that kind of pain.. I just have a constant dull ache when I walk, but have AVN, so like I said wish to avoid the pain that can come with it and perhaps move towards an THR. Guest guest
Bill, I had a THR on 11.11.2010.......and it was the best thing that I have ever done in my life after marrying my dear husband 42 years ago......I was in horrible pain and barely able to walk across the room. So the pain after my replacement was nothing compared to that. The pain after surgery is different than that before. The after pain is the kind that you know will go away in a few weeks. It is not fun but it will get better every day. And like everyone else, I admit that I should have done it much sooner. So if it is not necessary for you to wait any longer, I would say go for it before you suffer constantly. I also need a knee replacement and will definitely not let myself get to the painful point I did with the hip. Don't be scared, Bill. Life will be so much better afterwards. Bill, if you want to contact me privately, you are welcome. Ask anything you like no matter what. I wanted to be prepared and needed what would happen to me. barbmch@... Guest guest
Thanks , When was your surgery and what approach did your OS use? Guest guest
Thanks! Oh, Boy! I had seen that before and tried to find the answer. But I couldn't. My son-in-law is having a resurfacing on one hip next month. I had both knees replaced and didn't realize I had one bad hip. I don't want to think about surgery right now. But maybe I should. Guest guest
Hi Bill, I sympathise with you about your fear - I was terrified! Fear is a normal reaction! I had virtually no pain after my surgery - stiffness, heavy, achy tired limb, sure, but certainly no scary pain at all. Your pain level now may affect how you feel about your hip when it has been replaced - usually, the more pain you are in before surgery, the happier you are with the result afterwards - so don't be surprised if at first you are a little dissapointed - after all, lots of people will be telling you how fantastic your new hip will be, but because your old hip wasn't so bad, it may take you longer to notice the difference. Also, don't be freaked out if your full recovery takes quite a long time. That's not to say you will be hobbling round for ages - quite the opposite! It just means that along with the pleasures of your more immediate recovery ( coming of crutches, being able to drive etc) you will have a more extended period of your new hip just getting better and better - mine is still improving and it will be three years for me in March! Hope this helps Regards Freja
Guest guest
Surgery was on 6-27-2007. Not sure what approach but the block they put into it while in surgery was so greatr - gave me 48 hours of pain free movement. ________________________________ From: Bill G. <absofbeer2001@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Sun, February 13, 2011 10:11:11 PM Subject: Re: Normal Post Op Pain  Thanks , When was your surgery and what approach did your OS use?
