Guest guest
Did they send you home with CPM machine that really helped but if your doing a bike all the way around then you have to be bending more. Don't worry about the pain pills take them before your PT that will help you and still ice awards ice is your best friend I'm 2 months out and still ice take 1/2 pain pill twice a day unless I over do it then have to do more. You will get there don't give up Sharon LeVine When will it be better? My TKR was 01/11/2011 - so I'm 4 1/2 weeks out from surgery. I'm still very dependent on the pain medication so can't consider driving yet. I don't have access to aqua therapy - but am able to get to a stationary bicycle 5 times a week and visit the PT 3 times a week. I'm not feeling any benefit from the surgery yet. I'm in much more pain and my motion is much more limited than it was pre-surgery. Hard not to be depressed though my surgeon assures me that I'm progressing okay. He's rescinded his first assessment that I'd need what he calls a torture device to get better range of motion, or a " crunch " surgery. I can't seem to get better than about 15 degrees extension on the knee - but I still have quite a bit of inflammation so am hoping that as when the inflamation finally subsides I'll be able to get the knee straighter. The bent knee is leading to a lot of hip pain. Any advice on keeping positive? - Washington State
Guest guest
Thanks for your response Sharon. I'll keep on doing the PT and looking for small successes to celebrate. I do forget about the relief from the ice - but will make it more of a priority. > > Did they send you home with CPM machine that really helped but if your doing a bike all the way around then you have to be bending more. Guest guest
Look, I know it¹s hard to be patient, but if you have enough range of motion to do a stationary bicycle you¹re doing great! Of course you¹re taking pain meds, you should be. (I¹m not one of these iron horses who get by on aspirin!) When the inflammation dies down a lot of things will improve. Unless the surgeon is worried you shouldn¹t be. Remember, he¹s seen hundreds of cases and he¹s got more perspective! It¹s only been a month. Let up on yourself! Guest guest
Are you managing to get a walk every day, ? When i was able to start walking outside, things started to improve for me - I was told that walking helps reduce the swelling (which did aid the amount of movement I got in the knee). I started with short distances on two crutches, then went onto sticks, then one stick....and gradually built up the distance. If I miss a few days walking now, I notice it, and have to do a few more walks to start feeling better again. My op was 6 months ago now - I no longer walk with a limp, but still have occasional pain and frequent discomfort, but it's livable with. Guest guest
, I was at 4 months post surgery before I was glad that I did it. I also had a problem with extension. I put my heel on a ball (or pillow) and suspended my leg for 10 minutes per hour or so while watching TV. Yes, it hurt bad, but I finally got to a full extension. in TX From: gr8t_northwest <gr8t_northwest@...> Subject: When will it be better? Guest guest
Hi , You're in very early stage of rehab and it will be feeling better soon. It's really a process and it takes working at it and time. There's no exact timetables as every one progresses at different intervals. Keep taking your pain meds and icing your knee. Work hard at pt and also doing the exercises at home and soon you'll start to see some benifit and then one day you'll be walking and realize that the pain is gone. Once the swelling goes down that will make a big difference in extension and flexion. It's quite normal to have some depression at this stage. That should clear up as you start making some progress. Take care, Jeff ________________________________ From: gr8t_northwest <gr8t_northwest@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Sat, February 12, 2011 12:42:05 PM Subject: When will it be better?
