Guest guest
I had Dr. Coon's quad sparing TKR in October, less than 24 hours in hospital, walked out unaided next day, never needed crutches, walker or anything. But pain hit in a couple days and lived on pain pills for 11 days or so. And it still hurt terribly even after the initial pain period. Somebody asked if I was getting the other knee done and I said " I don't think so, this surgery is too painful " . Then my husband had to have heart surgery so I couldn't do any PT, instead walking the hospital corridors and parking lots, usually carrying heavy things...a no no. So now husband is finally ready to " leave the nest " on his own cardiac rehab, walking and driving OK, albeit walking very slowly. I went to PT the first time today and she said " what do you need me for, you are recovered " . Well, I do still need to practice standing up and sitting down in chairs without hands, and doing stairs. She also is a Pilates instructor, so I said, let's build up my whole body (on the PT prescription's dime), so we did. During that workout I noticed how strong and well aligned my opped knee was compared to my non-opped knee. I said " I think these TKRs aren't so bad after all " . What a difference a few weeks makes. Now I'm thinking about doing the other knee before too long, what is a few weeks of pain. I'm wearing heels now, getting back into the joy of shoes. So far so good, even without PT.
