Guest guest
How do the surgeons figure out which to do? If you consult a surgeon who does both THRs and Hip Resurfacings he will help you determine which would suit you better. Or, if given a choice it might be up to you to decide what you are comfortable with. I chose hip resurfacing simply because I wanted to conserve all of my femur in case I need a revision (or two) later in life. In your case it needs to be determined which is causing you the most pain and where that pain is originating from. Are the hips causing knee pain or the knees causing hip pain? Knee pain is extremely common with bad hips. I just talked to a woman yesterday whose husband was scheduled for a knee replacement then consulted with another surgeon who told him that the problem was his hip. He had hip replacement instead and the knee pain was eliminated. Second opinions are always warranted. Deb > > I read some about the hip resurfacing online. Guest guest
Hi Joi- Sometimes the docs make a decision based on thier own knowledge, & not all THR docs are well versed about resurfacing. Check out & Nephew's site, they are the manufacturer of the device approved for use in the states. You can then find a doc in your area who is approved to do the procedure. I had both hips resurfaced last year & can only say that it is fantastic. Helped out with a concrete pour on Friday, wheelbarrowing concrete 50' across a lawn & up onto the pile of dirt around the excavation. Better than the old days! Guest guest
How bad was your hip when you needed the resurfacing? I wasn't suggested by a doctor, I had to go find all about it myself & find a doc & tell him this is what we are going to do. Guest guest
Hi , If you are serious about considering hip resurfacing, you need to check some resources other than your surgeon, who I'm guessing does not perform hip resurfaces. LOL! A good place to start is surfacehippyinfo.com and the discussion group (like this one) called " surfacehippy, " which is very active and knowledgeable, or simply Google hip resurfacing to find many more resources. As you stated, you don't know where that 30% figure came from, and your surgeon didn't tell you where he got it from. It is best to research ALL your options prior to having surgery, so you can be confident in your decision, and in your chosen surgeon. Resurfacing is a good and viable and lasting option for many people, especially the young and active. -September BHR w/stem, 19.August.2009 > > I was told by my surgeon last week that the failure rate for hip resurfacing was about 30%. > I don't know where the figures came from, its not an option I can take, I was just being curious. > > x >
Guest guest
> I was told by my surgeon last week that the failure rate for hip resurfacing was about 30%. The FDA approved the procedure for the Birmingham device only on the data from Britain. Somehow, I very much doubt that it could have been approved with so high a failure rate. Me thinks your doctor is no approved to do resurfacings, & is a liar. I would ask for the actual source of his data, & if he doesn't come across w/a reliable source for his claim, I'd get another doctor. I had both my hips resurfaced in October of 2006 & they are GREAT> peace Hozack- Bilateral BHR 10/17-31/
Guest guest
Has anyone had a hip resurfacing as opposed to hip replacement in southern California? Who do you recommend for either of the procedures? What was your outcome in regards to your level of exercise afterward? Thanks!
