Lynn,

I recently also said I had just started to be able to kneel. The only

difference is, I believe my surgeon said he cleans off the back of the kneecap

and then he lines it with plastic. I do not have a metal button, as you

explained. So I guess, once again, each of is has a slightly different story to

tell. It is good to hear of so many successes.

Kneeling on new knee

Just wanted to mention that I am now noticing that at 1.5 years I can kneel

quite well on the replaced knee. It still feels " different " but I would no

longer call it desperately uncomfortable.

When I first started this rehab phase I remember someone writing that they

just kept persisting with the kneeling and that it worked to just keep

de-sensitizing the knee. So I was determined to to do this because being able to

kneel makes lots of activities much easier.

So I started at about 4-5 months with a big thick pillow under my knee. I

would just try a moment at a time, every day, gently putting more and more

weight on it.

I've kept this up over the months. At some point I stopped with the pillow and

just knelt on the carpeted floor in my bedroom - it is quite a cushy carpet.

Now at 1.5 years I am kneeling quite comfortably on the carpeted floor and can

do exercises in that position.

I am not ready for a hard floor yet amd may never be. But it is really nice to

know that I can kneel on carpet - or by putting a piece of foam under my knee.

My surgeon actually had a great idea. He said it is posible to kneel easily by

getting a thick piece of hard foam and sticking it under the shin, so the knee

itself does not rest on anything - the weight is on the front of the shin. This

works great for things like kneeling to garden or to bathe a child in a bathtub.

Hes aays there are actually shin guards in home hardware stores for workmen to

use in this way.

Anyway, thought I would pass this on because someone made a commment about not

being able to ever kneel. It MIGHT be possible with some desensitizing or using

a foam shinguard.
